Things Are Better If I Stay

Frankie's POV

"No fucking way! I love Italy. My family always took trips there when I was younger.", I said as I chugged my moonshine. Gerard had a meeting with some new clients that his teacher set him up for tonight so I took it as an opportunity to hang out with my new buddy. "Where else have you traveled?"

She took the last gulp of her Cosmo and started listing off the many countries she's been to, it went on forever but I expected that from a military brat. "And in Thailand I learned the true meaning of a "lady boy" at a very young age. I've never been so shocked in my life.", she busted in to laughter, "The best part was when my dad couldn't wipe the look of pure terror from his face as we walked down the strip." We laughed as I told her i couldn't imagine leaving Jersey. It was my heart and soul. I could never leave this place.

She just about jumped through the ceiling as the DJ started playing Come On Eileen by Dexy's Midnight Runners. "Oh my god, come on!" She pulled me to the 70's disco-esque illuminated dance floor. She twirled around in her multicolored summer dress and wrapped her waist scarf around my neck and pulled me close, which caused me to panic inside. "Are you just gonna stand there or are you gonna dance?", she yelled in my ear while she laughed, "Let loose Feank!" I smiled, took her lead and let go of everything while the music played.

We spun each other around in the middle of the crowd and danced like no one was watching, but at the same time we could feel every eye in the house was on us. Did we care? Of course not. After the song we sat back at the bar as we realized we were both dripping sweat. "God, I haven't danced like that since I was a kid. I forgot how fun it was.", I said as I wiped the beads of salt off my face. I was having such a blast with Kristy. She was so carefree and worriless. The place started to die down and we followed the crowd into the brisk autumn wind. "Well it's only 9:00, ready to call it a night?", I asked in hopes that she'd say no because I wasn't. She shook her head and invited me over to watch a movie. I caught a weird feeling go through my body, almost as if it was telling me it wasn't a good idea but then I told myself that Gee had movie nights with Ri and Rosie all the time so it shouldn't be a big deal. I followed close behind her as we sped down the freeway. She lived clear on the other side of town so I'd probably leave around 11 to beat my exhaustion.

We pulled into her driveway and walked through the house to her garage which looked like a mini theatre. There was a huge screen that hung in front of the large metal door and about twelve giant bean bags sprawled across the cement. I flopped down into the biggest one right in the front as she started the movie. "Pretty sweet set up huh?", she said as Hellraiser flashed across the screen, "My brother helped me put it together when he was home from deployment last year." I asked her how often she was able to see him, judging from the pictures of them that covered the rest of her house, they were incredibly close. "Not as much as I would like, but it's better than nothing.", she clutched the heart pendant that hung around her neck, "But with this, he's everywhere I go and it keeps me sane." She chuckled and eased her way onto the bean bag I was on. It confused me because there were plenty of other places to sit but whatever, it wasn't a big deal.

*2 hour time lapse*

I attempted to shift my body until I realized I couldn't move, I felt something wet and soft against my neck. I finally got my eyes to open and saw Kristy trailing her lips across me. I grabbed her by her shoulders and pushed her off. She let out a grunt as she landed on the bag in front of me. "What the fuck are you doing?", I yelled at her furiously. I could feel my blood boiling and then I looked at her, she had no idea what was going on or what she did wrong. I kneeled down in front of her and brushed her hair out of her face, "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to come at you so harsh. I just-", I stopped when I saw Gerard's face flash on my phone, "I gotta go. I'm sorry Kristy." I walked out to the driveway and answered the phone, "Hey, I'm okay. I'm on my way home now." There was a painful silence before he sighed in relief and said okay. I hung up and sped down the interstate. It was already one in the morning so the streets were pretty clear, the whole way home I wondered how I would tell Gee what happened. It wasn't anything major, just a confusing situation. I hit my fist against the steering wheel beating myself up for letting it happen. "Fuck!" I pulled into the apartment complex and parked, I looked up through our windows and I could Gee's silhouette pacing back and forth, a habit he had when he got worried. I climbed out the car and dragged myself up the stairs. As soon as I walked through the door, I felt two long, lanky arms wrap around my neck and two warm lips crash against mine.

"God Frankie, thank you for giving me a heart attack.", he said as he walked off into the bedroom. I apologized and said I fell asleep at a friends house. He shot me a suspectful look and climbed into bed. "Well whatever, but I've got good news and now that I know you're alive, I can tell you.", he said grinning as I sat on the mattress and played with Peppers. I asked him how is dinner went and what the good news was, "So the clients I met said they really like my work and feel like they could work with me. I figured it was for some art gallery or something so I was like okay, where's your museum? They just laughed and said museum? I'm the CEO of Dark Horse Comics and we want you to come work on our next series. At that point I died because they want me to write and illustrate comics for them Frankie!" I started to congratulate him when he looked down at his fingers and began to fiddle them, "But there's one con to it..", I asked what it could be knowing it was probably something minor because Gee was always a drama queen about nothing.

"I'd have to relocate to California."
