Hold on Till May
Chapter 45: Bad News
Irmarie P.O.V.
It was now the final days of April. Gosh I really can't believe the school year is ending. Can it please come sooner?
I had now entered my house. It seemed so lonely now. My brothers were always off working and I will sometimes go to the hospital to visit my Mom.
I wonder if she's going to wake up from her coma at all?
For the past two weeks I've been getting this feeling that Mom isn't going to wake up. Every time when I go to check in at the reception desk the nurses will give me sad looks.
You have to think positive, Irmarie. Those nurses give people sad looks all the time, I would say to myself.
For sure something isn't right and my brothers aren't saying anything.
I made myself a sandwich since it is like the only thing I can do and not end up burning up this house.
Robin and Amy are suppose to come pick me up so I can go see Doctor Gale about my heart-block.
It took them a while to get here because I had finished all my homework and finished watching an episode of Black Butler too.
"Hey, Irmarie. Ready to go?" Amy asked me.
"Yeah. Let me just get my bag and we can go." I said as I started to head to my room.
"By the way, this came in the mail." Robin said as I came into the living room. He set the mail down at the coffee table.
Normally I wouldn't be interested unless if it had something to do with me ordering things online, but this is typically the time of year that I get that letter to see if I am going to the University of Kansas to study music therapy.
Sure as hell will take a while to get to Kansas since I do live in New Jersey after all.
As I looked at the mail one did catch my eye. I pulled it out and saw the envelope.
I opened it and saw it was a letter from the University.
I skim through the text and read the bold words: Congratulations Irmarie Hale, you're attending the University of Kansas to study music therapy. "Holy shit!" I yell.
"Watch your language, child." Amy said.
"I got accepted!" I said.
"What?" Both Amy and Robin said.
"I got accepted to go to KU!" I yell and jump up and down.
"You did!" They both said.
"Yes!!! Holy shit, is this a dream!? Am I dead!?" I asked.
"No this is real. Oh my God you're growing up now!" Robin said.
"You better come visit us on the holidays." Amy said.
"Don't worry, I will." I smiled.
"You have to tell Vinny, Spike, and Rocky tonight." Robin said.
"Are you kidding? How can something this big be so forgetful?" I said.
"Because that happened to me once." Robin said.
It's true. I think I was still in middle school, maybe ending fifth grade when Robin had gotten accepted to a college in St. Louis to study for computer technical things. He was going to tell us the same day he saw the letter but forgot about it and told us two weeks later.
"I'm not like you, Robin." I said.
"You kind of are." He said.
"In your dreams." I said.
"Hey, instead of arguing let's go to the hospital. It's almost five-thirty." Amy said. Always trust Amy to break up an argument.
We headed outside to their car.
As we headed to the hospital, I thought of the letter. I got accepted to KU. Do you know how awesome that is?!
As I thought of all the awesome things, my thoughts suddenly went to Gerard.
Oh snap, I haven't told him or the guys yet. I thought to myself.
I wonder how this is going to work. I don't even know if Gerard had applied to any colleges to begin with. What is he going to study?
"We're here!" Amy said.
"Already?" I asked.
"Yeah? How can you not tell?" Robin ask.
"I don't know, probably because I wasn't paying attention." I said as I got out of the car.
"How can you not be paying attention to the road!?" Robin asked.
"I got bored so I wasn't paying attention." I said.
"How the hell are you a honors student?" Robin asks.
"Probably because I actually do turn in my homework." I said.
"That you end up doing late at night." Amy said.
"Hey, that's like the only time I can actually concentrate on homework." I said.
"What ever floats your boat." Robin said.
They checked me in and we waited for fifteen minutes to be in a room.
Doctor Gale came in. He had on a bow tie and wow can he pull that off.
"Hello Irmarie. How have you've been?" He asked.
"Fine." I said.
"How's school?" He asked.
"Horrible." I simply said.
"Ah, so no change at all since I graduated then." Doctor Gale said. He turned to Robin.
"Let me guess which brother you are. You're not Vinny. Spike is sassy and you don't seem to be sassy," he looked at Amy and smiled. "You're Robin."
Robin turned his head to my direction and gave me a look that said 'how'.
"We were waiting for some test results and I started talking." I said.
"Speaking of test results, ready?" Doctor Gale asked.
I nodded as he handed me a hospital gown which I still hate even though I come here a lot.
I head to the bathroom and take off my clothes, leaving my undergarments on. Amy came in and tied the back of the gown.
"How long are you going to be sleeping?" Amy asked me.
"Enough time to check me... about an hour or two." I said.
"Okay. What do you think is going to happen?" Amy asked.
"Well, since it's close to May, maybe I'll have two-degree heart block." I said.
"And that's the goal, right?" Amy said.
"Yeah. The goal for May. If my two-degree heart block is okay for me to live without my pacemaker then I've made my life goal." I said.
"Well let's get you out there so they can check you up." Amy said.
We walked out of the restroom and into the room.
"What took you so long?" Robin asked.
"We were talking." I said.
"Well then, I hope you did all your homework." Doctor Gale said as he patted a spot on the bed.
I went and laid down on the bed as a nurse came in.
"Is she ready?" She asked.
"Yeah."
She comes in the a needle that puts me to sleep.
"You won't feel a thing." She says.
Lies, is all I can think of.
She grabs my arm and injects the medicine into my veins. I felt a pinch as this happened.
"Okay. You're good to go." She says.
As the medicine starts to kick in, Doctor Gale explains to them about the EKG test.
By the time I was ready to sleep, they began to move me to the other room.
I woke up in a different room than I was when I came here. This room actually had color in it. Sure it was green and brown but that was better than seeing white.
Amy was asleep on the chair and Robin, God knows where Robin is.
I still felt pretty sleepy, but that was the medicine wearing off.
I heard the door knock, making Amy startle awake.
"Sorry, Amy. It's just me." Robin says as he comes in.
"Hey." Amy says to the both of us.
"Irmarie, someone is here to visit you." Robin says as he steps into the room with Gerard following behind him.
I smiled. "Hey."
"Are you okay?" Gerard asked as he sat on the bed.
"I'm fine. They just had to check me to see how I am." I said.
As if on cue, Doctor Gale comes in.
"I have bad news." Doctor Gale said.
Gerard held on to my hand as Doctor Gale pulled out the papers from the test.
"She still has third-degree heart block, but there's an upside to it. It's wearing off and she should be at second-degree heart block by mid May." Doctor Gale said.
"How is it bad?" Robin asked.
"Well we were hoping that her third-degree heart block will turn to a second-degree by the first of Mays but it seems like as if her heart kind of back-schedule itself to mid Mays. Or so I hope." He said.
"It still okay, I mean we are hoping till May." I said.
"Yes. Come back next week so we can check you again." Doctor Gale said. "You'll be out in an hour." He said and left.
I look at Robin. I was going to ask him if he can get me something to eat but I noticed something. His nose was red and his eyes were sort of puffy as if he was crying.
"Robin... what's wrong?" I asked.
"W-what?" He said.
"What's wrong Robin?" I asked him again.
"N-nothing." Robin said.
"Robin. What's wrong." I said but he didn't reply. "Amy what's wrong?"
Amy didn't reply also. She just stared at the floor.
"Robin I am not a little girl anymore, so tell me what's wrong!" I demanded.
"Robin, she's going to find out someday. You can't keep the truth." Amy said.
"I know Amy it's just... I don't want anything to happen to her." Robin said.
"Uh hello! I'm right here!" I said.
"Robin, we talked about this and Irmarie's right, she's not a little girl anymore." Amy said.
"I can't tell you, Irmarie. I'm sorry." Robin said.
"Gerard do you know what's going on?" I asked him.
Gerard shook his head, not meeting my eyes.
"Robin, if you don't tell her then I am going to." Amy said.
"No Amy! I'm scared." He said.
"What are you so scared of?" I asked him.
"I'm scared of how you'll react to the news." Robin said.
News? News of what? And then it hit me.
"What happened to Mom?" I asked him.
All Robin did was just shook his head and began to cry.
"R-Robin?"
"Mom... Mom isn't coming back... she's..." Robin began to cry even harder.
"Robin. I had visited Mom yesterday and she looked fine. What happened." I pleaded.
"Irmarie... she's brain dead." Robin said. Amy walked over to Robin and hugged him.
I wanted to cry but I couldn't cry. I had no tears left since I had cried so many times before.
I have no parents now. Not long ago did I buried my Dad and now I get the news that Mom has been brain dead. I didn't even want to ask how long has she been brain dead for the fear I might get hurt even more.
I haven't notice that Gerard had been hugging me the whole time until I felt the fabric on Gerard's shirt damp. I haven't even notice I had been crying to begin with. Tears fell out automatically because I was too tired to even cry. I closed my eyes and tried to sleep.
I still hope that all of this was still a nightmare. That Mom and Dad were still here. That Gerard hadn't lost Grandma Helena. Everything.
I woke by the sound of someone knocking on the door.
"Hello?" Doctor Gale said.
I heard someone get up and then they walked outside the room.
I open my eyes. Amy was fast asleep and Gerard was asleep by my side, so Robin was the one who went to Doctor Gale.
I closed my eyes and snuggled up to Gerard, who wrapped his hands around me like a teddy bear.
"Irmarie." someone's voice whispered to me, "wake up."
I opened my eyes and saw Gerard.
"Hm?" I said.
"Come on, it's time to go home." He said and handed me my clothes.
I got off of bed and headed to the bathroom. I untied the back of the gown and slipped into my jeans and into a Nirvana shirt.
I went out of the restroom, not bothering to look at myself in the mirror.
"Ready to go?" Robin asked.
"Yeah." I whispered and we left the room.
