The Art Teacher

Chapter Five; At Least She'll Be Happy

Frank’s Point of View

I cannot believe I’m going to do this,’ I thought to myself as I walked over to where Jamia sat in the lunchroom the next day, feeling my stomach drop slightly. The only person that really convinced me to do this was Mr. Way, and it felt wrong I guess, like when he told me to go for it yesterday his voice faltered a little bit, which makes me think that he actually didn’t want me to ask Jamia out. It’s confusing, yes, but there’s no point in turning back now that I’m standing right beside her getting ready to sit there for lunch.

“Hi Frank,” Jamia said, putting her sandwich down on her plate for a moment while she hugged me affectionately. I know that by doing this I would be lying to myself, but at least she’ll be happy.

I sighed out forlornly before I placed my brown bag of food down on the table, and sat beside her, ignoring the food as I looked at her.

"I need to ask you something Jam, but if I do I don't want it to jeopardize our friendship, okay?" I asked when she had given me her full attention. She looked at me for a moment, biting her bottom lip thoughtfully before she gave me a firm nod of her head. "The two of us have known each other for a few years, and have become great friends, but as time has progressed so have my feelings for you."

Jamia's eyes had lit up after my little speech while she nodded her head at me, telling me to continue. She knew it was coming, and really it made me happy to see her with such a joyful glint in her brown eyes.

"I really like you Jam, and I was hoping that maybe you would consider being my girlfriend," I suggested while looking down at my hands, which were in my lap. There were a couple of seconds where she didn't answer me, but when I looked up at her there was a big grin on her face before she enveloped me in a tight hug, whispering short yes' into my ear with happy sighs along with them. I gave a small chuckle as I wrapped my arms back around her with a small smile on my lips. This was my chance to have love without people being disgusted of it, even if I was lying to Jamia about having true feelings for her.

When Art rolled around at 2:35 I felt my heart rate quicken as I thought of Mr. Way teaching me as well as my other classmates more things today about art, but I preferred it to where it was him giving me lessons. Maybe I should show up late again so that I'd get paired up with him instead of Jamia or Bob. For the sake of my attendance, and my mom always telling me to be on time or early even, though, I was the first person to walk out the door of Mr. Logan's classroom, heading towards the Art hall.

The second I put my right foot over the threshold of Mr. Way's classroom I regretted it. I was a few minutes early, which resulted in me being the first kid in there, but what I saw in front of me broke my heart a little bit. Mr. Way was standing in front of his desk while a very muscular man leaned against it, looking up at my Art teacher with a charming smile on his lips as Mr. Way guided his slim index finger down the other man's chest, his right hand on his desk so that he could support himself without falling on top of the other man. His hand wrapped around the muscular man's light blue tie, bringing the man in closer to his face before he pressed their lips together.

"Hey Frankie, what're you...," I heard Jamia say as she trailed off, her soft hand sliding into my own as both of us watched our teacher kiss another man. She looked up at me with questioning eyes, and I just shrugged my shoulders before I cleared my throat, causing the two men to break apart quickly, gazing over at the two of us with wide eyes.

"Uh, hey Frank, Jamia," Mr. Way greeted us awkwardly while the other man leaned forward from the desk, both of them looking at us with worried eyes. I was tempted to laugh at them, but that was quickly replaced by the hatred and jealousy I held for the other man as an angry blush tinted my cheeks.

"I should probably get back to my classroom, I'll see you tonight Gerard," the mystery man said tentatively as he glanced over at me as well as Jamia before he spoke into our teacher's ear. Mr. Way nodded his head wordlessly, and the other man went on his way, brushing past me with a loud huff. I looked over at Jamia, expecting to see her looking at me, but instead I saw her looking at Mr. Way with curious eyes.

"How are you today Mr. Way?" she asked as she dragged me into the large classroom, avoiding any questions about the other man, which I'm sure he appreciated.

"I'm pretty good Jamia, my life is great right now," Mr. Way said with a small smile on his thin lips. "How about yourself?"

"Same," she replied as she squeezed my hand slightly from where they sat on top of our conjoined desks.

"Oh I see," Mr. Way spoke in a light tone, looking down at Jamia and I's intertwined hands before he looked at me, giving me a sly wink. I know he meant it as a friendly gesture, telling me that he was right in a way, but it made me blush anyways, my heart rate accelerating considerably. Fuck, this man could be the death of me.
