Love As Fabulous As A Killjoy
So Long and Goodnight
We all gasp to see Mrs. Way laying there not breathing. Gerard runs past us, and I watch him go. Mikey is hugging Ray and Bob crying so I run after Gerard. I ask around to see if anyone has seen him and they point in the direction he went. I begin to lose my breath and I start to walk. Pulling out my lighter and cigarettes I look over at the park to see Gerard sitting on one of the swings. I put my stuff back in my pocket and jog over to him.
“Hey,” I say as I sit down in the swing next to him facing the opposite direction as him.
“Hi,” he whispers.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m just dandy.”
“Gee,” I trail off.
“What do you want me to say Frank!? That I’m Okay? Cause I’m not! I’m NOT okay.”
I sit there awkwardly and I look away from Gerard and at the ground. I look up and stare out into the woods as if it has an answer to what I should say to Gerard. Man, if only I was good at this kind of stuff. I look back over at him and his head is down. His shoulders are shaking indicating he is cry, I get up and I pull him up. When he is up I look at him; I wipe his tears as they travel down his face slowly. He looks me in the eyes and then pulls me into a big hug and I respond by putting my arms around him. Soon enough he starts sobbing.
“She’s gone,” he sniffles into my shoulder.
“I know,” I reply.
“She’s really gone.”
“Shh… She’s somewhere special where you will see her again,” I say trying to calm him down.
He lets go, wipes his eyes and looks me in the eyes. I give him a small smile to reassure him that everything is okay. He sniffles then walks past me back to the hospital. I follow behind him and pull out a cigarette then light it. I finish it before we go back in, we find everyone in the lobby talking. They all look at us and wave or give us some smiles. Ray stands up first and puts his arm around my shoulder and walks me near the door where no one else will hear us.
“How is he?” Ray asks me.
“Well… He’s shaken up. Y’know? He may be like this for a while.”
“I feel bad for them, y’know,” Ray says as he runs his hand over his mouth and looks over at the Ways and Bob, “she meant everything to them especially Gerard.”
“Yeah,” I reply awkwardly kicking the ground because I had one met them this year and I don’t know so much about them, whereas Ray and Bob has known them longer, “how is Mikey?”
“He’s better, still devastated but better than before. And hey,” he punches my shoulder lightly, “thanks for running after Gerard, who knows what would have happened if you didn’t run after him.”
I shrug, “He’s my friend, and friends look out for each other.”
“Let’s go back to the group,” Ray suggests.
“Yeah, they probably think we’re up to something,” I joke to lighten up the mood.
We head back to the group and once Grandpa Way was finished filling out papers we all drove back to their house and from there; Bob, Ray, and I departed our ways.
TIME LAPS
It’s been a week since the passing of Grandma Way, today is her funeral. I stand in my mirror tying my tie, getting ready. I haven’t erased my last quote so it seems to me I need a new one. I ponder on what I should write, finally it hits me. I search for my marker and then write on the mirror “So long and goodnight.”
My phone begins to vibrate on the dresser. I look at the ID to see it is Ray.
“Yo.”
“We are outside your house.”
“Okay be out in like 2 secs.”
“Alright.”
With that I hang up, I check myself out in the mirror and then run upstairs. I hug and kiss my mom good bye. I run out the front door and hop into the back seat.
“You clean up nice,” Ray says jokingly.
“Yeah, well I can look nice when I want.”
I scoot into the middle of the back seat because Bob is up front and we aren’t picking up the Way brothers. We arrive at the cemetery and walk over towards the friends section. During the whole burial I kept my eye on Gerard, keeping an eye on him in case he runs away. He just sat there next to his brother and his grandfather, they all seem pretty calm. Once it ended Gerard walked away from the crowd. I say my condolences from my mom and I to Mikey and Grandpa Way then I jog after Gerard.
“Hey Gee, wait up!” He turns around to see who it is then stops.
“Hey Frank.”
“How are you?”
“I’m here.”
“Yeah, but we should head back. Everyone is heading off to the restaurant.”
“I don’t want to go.”
“But you should.” He looks me in the eyes and there they were the tears I was looking for. I hug him and whisper to him, “Come on, your Grandmother would want you to behave.” He chuckles lightly and wipes his tears.
“Alright let’s go.”
Since the car that drove the Ways to the cemetery left with Mikey and Grandpa Way, Gerard had to come with us. We all cracked a few jokes here and there. The feeling changed when we arrived at the restaurant because for the first time Gerard forgot it all, or so as it seemed. I looked over at him and he seemed tensed. I can tell he really didn’t want to be here.
I don’t blame him.
