The colours of humans

A word of truth

"Come on Frank…" Gerard whispered with an arm around Frank as they drew closer to his flat.
"Gee!" Frank whined dragging out the 'e', "Gee. My foot's really wet!"
"Well maybe you shouldn’t have got really drunk and thrown your boot into the river."
"B-but it was going to reach the sea!" Frank laughed.
"Of course it was." Gerard sighed.

He reached into his back pocket to find his key and the two of them managed to drag Frank up the stairs and get him safely into the flat. They placed the sodden Frank down gently on the sofa where he stretched out to try and be as tall as possible, he looked quite like a short fluffy cat that had just woken up and needed to stretch out. His long black hair was soaked from the rain and stuck to his forehead, his hands were shaking slightly but within 30 seconds his eyes had closed and he fell into a shallow sleep to leave Gerard stood awkwardly by the door with Spite.

"You want to stay for a bit?" Gerard asked, throwing his dirty grey converse into the corner and hanging his off-white jumper on the radiator.
"I would, but I have to go." Spite hissed, "Jealousssy isss probably already annoyed that I'm in the human world and that she'sss still ssstuck behind the bar ssso I better go. Thanksss for the offer though."
"Behind the bar?" Gerard asked, confusion running a marathon through his voice.
"Yesss, you heard me right. I help out behind the bar in our world, ssserving drinks in my ssspare time and that."
"Oh, okay."
"Lisssten Gerard." Spite continued, leaning on the door frame casually, "just think about it you know?" He ignored Gerard's puzzled expression and continued talking, "think about what you could both do. You two are almossst ready. The colour behind your eyesss is almossst the 'perfect' grey. It will be time sssoon and you are the only two in the world that can overthrow Death."
"I know…" Gerard mumbled nervously, "but I feel that we'd be meddling in something that has nothing to do with us and what i-"
"Thisss has everything to do with you and your boyfriend."
"Frank's not my boyfriend…" Gerard whispered.
"But you want him to be." Spite smiled.
"Shhh, what if he hears us?"
"Gerard." Spite smiled, "he's asssleep, he's not going to hear usss and besssides good luck waking your boyfriend up later on."
"How many times do I have to sa-"
"You wisssh he was," Spite grinned again, "I can tell, you know. I know that you like him."
"Shut up Spite."
"But jussst imagine…" the snake continued as his eyes darted around the room, "imagine if you overthrew Death, the very thing that made hisss life a misssery, do you think that he would like you then? Gerard, you have to understand that Death has ruined Frank'sss life. Imagine that both your parentsss and best friend were dead and you had the chance to get revenge but he wasss 'too scared'. Do you even know how many times Death has nearly taken Frank? And I've told you all about how Death has been treating all of usss and how we are all having to leave. Please Gerard…"
"I'll think about it." Gerard smiled.
"Fabulousss." Spite chuckled. He gave one last wave to the sleeping Frank and then to Gerard before heading out of the flat, down the stairs and onto the moonlit street below.

Gerard closed the door softly, trying his best not to wake the sleeping Frank up as he sat down on the chair opposite. He stared at the sleeping mess of limbs in front of him and smiled gently.
'Why of all people that I like does it have to be you Frank?' he smiled to himself.
Gerard admitted that he liked Frank but he brushed it from his shoulders, deciding that there was no way that Frank would like him back and that he would have to solve that problem another time. At that particular moment in time Gerard was just pleased that Frank was safe and warm but most of all with him. He looked at the mess of limbs and sighed, walking towards the pile of sleeping soaked jeans.

"Come on…" He chuckled, "We should probably get you to bed."
Gerard picked Frank from the sofa, supporting his back and under his legs as if he was a huge sleeping rabbit. He had almost managed to make it to the door of the bedroom when Frank's eyes fluttered open.
"Hey Gee…" He smiled, "where are we going?"
"You are going to bed…" Gerard smiled, "because you didn't look very comfy on the sofa."
"Okay, thank you Gee."
"Oh my god!" Gerard cried sarcastically as he kicked the door open with his foot, "it can say thank you."
"Piss off Gee!" Frank laughed.
"Okay Frankie, dry pj's are in the second draw down. Call me back once you've changed."
"Okay Gee…" Frank replied, shooing him away.

Gerard sat for another 5 minutes in the living and decided that he might as well make himself a coffee while he waited. He was just about to pour the water into his mug when he heard a thump. He ran quickly to the bedroom and threw open the door to see that Frank had fallen and landed heavily on the floor. The pyjama top was somehow stuck over his head, his arm through the head hole and he lay there and peered back up at Gerard.
"I fucking felled over Gerard!" He laughed as he tried to wriggle his way out of the t-shirt.
"You fucking incapable...How did you even?" Gerard sighed, trying not laugh at the wriggling mess in front of him. He stepped forward, dragged Frank to his feet and sat him on the edge of the bed as if he was a small child.
"Now then Frank…" He began sarcastically, "this is how we put on a t-shirt."

He helped Frank break free from the mess he had made before carefully (and correctly) placing the shirt back over his head.
"There we go." Gerard smiled.
"I'm not stupid!" Frank laughed again.
"If you say so…"
"Hey!" Frank cried, nudging Gerard away from him, "I'm not stupid!"
"I know, I know…." Gerard replied, "I never said you were…"
"But it sounded like that's what you were thinking."
"I'm sorry Frank."
"You should be." He huffed, laying down and pulling the covers up to his chin.

"Listen Frank…" Gerard began, still sitting on the edge of the bed, "I found your, I found your parents and Alfie's graves today and I just wanted to say that I'm sorry. Someone had left grey flowers there though. I understand if you don't want to talk about it but now I understand why you must hate Death so much."
"Okay… I've seen the flowers for years, I don't know who puts them there." Frank sniffed, rolling onto his side to stare into Gerard's eyes.
"Oh, I thought you put them there. I didn't realise that you lost all three of them within three days as well Frank."
"That's not even half of the story…" He muttered back.
"Frank, do you wanna talk about it?"
"No Gerard! I don't!" He almost shouted back at him.
"Sorry Frank, I'm sorry."
"Fucking great!"

Gerard sat for a few minutes at the side of Frank, who wept gently into his hands before grabbing his old phone and earphones and shoving them into his ears. He cranked his music up as loud as it would go, sighed, and stared blankly at the ceiling. Gerard planned to sit at his side until he fell asleep, so when Frank's breaths became softer and as his eyes began to close he stood up and headed towards the door.

"Gerard, where are you going? Don't leave!" Frank cried, ripping his earphones from his ears and sitting up. He once again pulled the covers up to his chin and peered over them as Gerard made his way back over towards him.
"I'm tired Frank, I'm going to go and sleep on the sofa, okay?" comforted Gerard.
"But what if Death comes and gets me?"
"Then you shout because I'm only in the living room, okay?" Gerard yawned afterwards, "and I will come and you will be safe."
"Yeah, okay…" He sighed, "Hey Gerard…" He whispered as the red-haired man walked towards the door, he turned back around and looked back at Frank.
"Yes Frank…" Gerard hummed, his voice as soft as silk as it travelled gently to Frank's ears.
"You're kinda cute…" Frank giggled before pulling the blanket fully over his head.
"Frank…" Gerard replied calmly, "I think that’s the alcohol talking."
"Hm, I don't think so Gerard." He sighed, laying back down and putting his earphones back in. "Night Gee." He smiled, waving to him.
"Night Frank…" Gerard whispered, waving to him and heading out of the door.

He closed the door softly and made himself comfy on the sofa, wishing that Frank could have told him that when he was sober. Gerard sighed, deciding that that was probably the best that Frank was ever going to say about him.

@HumansScareMe

Hiya, oh wow...thanks so much for reading, I hope you enjoy the rest too. :D
i didn't mean to really describe death in so much detail really, I tried to focus on introducing characters and Frank and Gerard (later on) but her opinions just kept weaving their way into the story and then it just kinda happened and those opinions about death stayed.
I really hope that the rest will be okay, and thank you so much for reading and the compliments, your comment made me smile, so, um, thanks. :D :)
