The colours of humans

A plan of betrayal

I walked in through the old creaking wooden door, ducking beneath the frame and entering into a room that smelt heavily of beer. I shut the door behind me, it probably surprises you to know that I, Death, entered that room and did not receive a single odd luck or a shocked face. Well, after all: this was no ordinary pub. This was no pub full of humans or a pub in the human world, but in another, full of the beings representing the colours of people.

The wooden timbers hung low and the greying ceiling sunk slightly in the centre. To my left there was a battered wooden bar with a few bullet marks here and there, surrounded by an army of empty bar stools. The air was thick and heavy, almost as if a steam engine was chugging away in the dark right hand corner of the room with a trail of sticky-beer-floor leading to the figure. A fire roared nearby, the rug on the floor threadbare and rotting, the bedraggled square windows doing very little to breathe some life into the pub.

I sat on one of the bar stools and it wasn’t long until two figures appeared in front of me.
"I can't believe she'd do that!" An annoyed voice exclaimed. Introducing Jealousy.
"I know right!" Another voice hissed, spitting onto the floor and wiping his shoe in it. Spite.

Jealousy had been there as long as I could remember, her light green dyed hair looked as if she sneezed in her hands and used it as conditioner. Her face was covered in make-up, her lips the same colour as her hair and what looked like spiders were her 'totally-real-eyelashes'. An envious expression was stuck to her face 24/7 and she could always, always, find something to complain about. Her face was covered in concealer and obviously a different shade of colour to her neck, rings strangled her fingers and her ears had so many piercings in them that I'm surprised that they didn’t fall off from the weight. And last but not least, she wore a school uniform; blue blazer with a light green edging, a skirt that served the same use as a belt and a handbag slung over her shoulder. Apparently Jealousy spent a lot of time in school, many of those with green behind their eyes are moody teenagers who are just jealous all the time. She smiled bitterly at me, noticing that I had in fact been waiting.

"Sorry," she apologised to me sourly, grabbing a glass and filling it with the usual lemonade (I never drink on the job).
She slid it across the bar until it stopped perfectly in front of me.

"I mean all I want is to wear blue!" Jealousy moaned, "but hunger wears blue and she won't swap! I fucking hate green!"
"Bitch!" Spite replied, "I think that ssshe's doing it to ssspite you!"

I sighed, rolling my eyes. Spite had recently become Jealousy's best friend; they found that they had something in common or something along those lines. He acts like a snake, and with his dark green snake skin suit and slicked back greasy black hair he sure does look like one. It wouldn’t surprise me if he had a forked tongue.

I ignored the two as they continued to moan about everything, I drank the cool lemonade and fiddled with the old golden watch that lay hidden in my pocket. The hands didn’t move anymore and the case was cracked and the clasp stiff and the chain screamed if you swung it. Though it was still important to me, time is a strange thing, everything you say and do is taken by time, even this sentence as it's being typed: that’s been taken by time, that sentence is in the past now. Time is simply a way of counting down until you have to do something; going to school, getting a job, doing the job, paying taxes, giving speeches/presentations etc. But ultimately, time is simply used to count down until you eventually die; humans seem so proud to have orbited the fireball (known as the sun) 80 times. But believe me, living gets boring after a while. Sometimes I wish that I was human so that maybe I could know what it's like to not be alive.

That reminds me, a human once said: "there is no death, only a change of worlds."

I can assure you that I do indeed exist (let's not get into the simulation hypothesis of philosophy just yet) and I am unaware of any other worlds other than the human and where I sit now. It is similar to a long conveyor belt of life. This is my favourite metaphor to use; it definitely beats the one about a boat reaching the horizon or a river flowing to the sea but they all show the same message. Some humans in the world often go shopping for food at a supermarket and they place the food on the conveyor belt at the checkout. The food begins its life a little confused but still the belt moves on. Inevitably the food will reach the cashier person who will scan it. There is no way of the food getting past the cashier without it being scanned (unless it's stolen, but let's pretend not for this metaphor). The cashier does not know where the food will go from there but treats them well regardless. I'm like the cashier. You see the food, I mean…I mean people, the people were always going to die, they were going to meet me ever since the day they were born and I would wish them well on their journey. As they say: humans must learn to enjoy the ride, no matter if the conveyor belt gets stuck or reverses or does some other stupid shit that supermarket tills like to do.

I sighed, realising that I'd finished my lemonade so I placed it carefully down onto the bar. Next to it there shone a mirror. A tiny circular mirror with a purple edging and a golden shell clasp. I picked it up carefully and held it to my face. A pale looking figure with shoulder length grey hair looked back at me, her lips were the same colour as her hair but her nose piercing glinted. The lips were thin and grey with smudged lipstick and it was as if you had captured mist and put it in her eyes. She wore a white and grey t shirt and ripped skinny jeans with boots that made her look a few inch taller. To be honest she looked quite tired, maybe she needed another lemonade. I closed the mirror, realising that the reflection was me.

"Don't look in my mirror! You'll damage her!" A voice cried at me, I heard rushed footsteps and a figure snatched the mirror from the bar. It was opened again, this time revealing a man with curly brown hair and a crown of olive leaves. He wore a purple Greek chiton with an even deeper purple coloured cloak wrapped around him.
"Ah! There you are my gorgeous!" He sighed, stroking his reflection, his eyes the same colour as the olive leaves. He snapped the mirror shut and sat on the bar stool next to me, staring, staring Death straight in the face.

"Hi Narcissism…" I waved reluctantly.
"Hi Death." He said casually, ordering a drink at the same time.
"How are you?" I asked politely.
"Well, how do you think I am?"
"Probably good."
"Good!" He yelled angrily, snatching his drink from Jealousy so that he could peer at his own reflection, "You think that me, Narcissism, is just feeling good today?! I'm feeling fabulous! I always feel fabulous! How could you not if you had a beautiful face like mine?! Everywhere is a catwalk, honey! But only for the good looking ones! Ahem…like me…."
"Okay then…." I muttered, hopping off the barstool and heading for the toilets.

I almost made it…Almost. I mean, can Death ever have a break?
A figure stood in the doorway, her pink dress floated gently along the floor and she puckered her bright pink lips at me.
"Hey," she said seductively her voice like silk as she placed her hand in mine.
"Hi Lust. Please can I get past so that I can go to the loo?" I replied, wriggling my hand free from her.
"You'll have to get through me first." She smiled again, biting her lip.
"Please Lust just let me past." I pleaded.
"Roses are red. Violets are blue. I like spaghetti. Let's go fuck."
"Okay, 1. stop stealing references and 2. NO!" I replied, trying to push past her but with very little effect.
"Hey, Death" She paused, licking her lips, "you're out of this world…Mind if I pay Uranus a visi-"
"Fuck off Lust! If you use one more of your shitty pickup lines then I'm going to throw up this shit that I need and personally ram it down your throat! Thank you!" I yelled pushing past her and locking the door behind me. Jeez, what is her problem?

I sat in front of the fire, Lust was busy telling Narcissism how gorgeous he was so I was safe for a while. I sipped another lemonade and ran my fingers over the surface of the watch.

"A little birdie once told me to stop using him in stories when I get high, I told him to fuck of back to his nest." A familiar voice laughed, hitting his fists against the table which shook slightly. Now is the time where I introduce you to Evil. An almost invisible Evil who was shrouded in the darkness around him, with his cape over him as he probably pretended to be Batman.
"Evil. Please could you not swear?" A high pitched voice pleaded, "Or drink?"
"Innocence, you may look like an angel but I certainly ain't one. And anyway alcohol contains evil, the more I drink the eviller I get! Just refuelling!"
"But I thought we were planning on taking out death…." Innocence whispered. I listened closely, both were unaware that I was listening.
"Yeah I know! Leave it to Batman!" Cried Evil, putting a cigarette to his lips and lighting it.
"We can't leave this to Batman!" Replied the angel-face (that is Innocence). I could see the pale outline of his white ripped jeans but could still imagine a halo floating above his head. His dark skin glowed softly and his eyes were a deep chocolate brown colour.
"Yeah we can! Batman is my best friend!"
"But Evil Batman doesn't exis-"
"Shut up Batman is real!"
"Okay, okay…" Innocence quivered, drinking his orange juice and opening his bag of candyfloss.

"But we need to get rid of Death, it's her fault that Love and Happiness both left within a month. They'd got sick of having so few people with red and yellow behind their eyes. Poor guys. I hope they're okay!"
"Yeah, but how are we going to…you know…how are you going to actually get rid of Death?"
"We get my Frank and your Gerard to meet. You know…black behind the eyes + white behind the eyes+ a little time = grey = can defeat Death = no more death. They are evil but seem pure and innocent. But how do we get them to meet?" chuckled Evil.
"I don't know…." Sighed Innocence standing up, I ran for cover and hid at the side of the fire place and placed my drink on the top. It was pretty hot but better than letting them know that I know about their plans to over throw me. I mean, it's not my fault that others have left, I'm doing my best here guys.
"But anyway…" continued Innocence, "It's 8 o'clock so it's bedtime for me."
"Bu-"
"8 o'clock is always bedtime! They will meet, I promise!" And angel-face had left.

Well then, it looks like I'll be paying a certain Gerard and Frank a visit.

I stood up to grab my lemonade before it started to get too warm, though there was only a mark left on the fireplace where it should have been.
"Hunger…" I muttered to myself, "always hungry….for everything."

Notes

Hello again. Sooo....I don't know if anyone is reading but: Ta-da! The second chapter! Yeah...there was lots of characters being introduced there so sorry if it was a little boring but most of them are significant later on. In the next chapter we will (finally) meet Frank and Gerard. Thank you for reading and for like 50 views even though there was only one chapter up. Hope you have a nice day. :)

@HumansScareMe

Hiya, oh wow...thanks so much for reading, I hope you enjoy the rest too. :D
i didn't mean to really describe death in so much detail really, I tried to focus on introducing characters and Frank and Gerard (later on) but her opinions just kept weaving their way into the story and then it just kinda happened and those opinions about death stayed.
I really hope that the rest will be okay, and thank you so much for reading and the compliments, your comment made me smile, so, um, thanks. :D :)
