The colours of humans

A day of misery

It had of course been another long day of collecting souls (as it always is) and feeling as though I deserved a break I headed back down to the bar for a glass of lemonade. As I said earlier, I never drink on the job, and with 7.5 billion people on the planet that need tending to and a whole lot more souls that need to be passed on into the sky; I am nearly always working.

I walked down the rotting wooden stairs and stood in front of the old creaking door whose hinges complained when you opened it. The paint on the door had peeled away years ago and the handle had fallen long before (around the same time that Fear went into hiding). I reluctantly placed my palms on the door and pushed it gently to open it. But it did not open. I tried again thinking that it could have possibly just got stuck but after a 4th attempt I realised that I wasn't able to get in. The door couldn’t have been locked for there was no key hole or lock on the other side.

"Guys…Will you let me in please?" I asked politely, knocking on the door lightly.
There was no reply.
"Guys, this isn't a very funny joke…"
Again there was no reply, just shuffling and the click of something close to the other side of the door.
"Fear, (if it is you) I'm not going to hurt you, you don't have to be scared. Or for a matter of fact I'm not going to hurt anyone; please just let me in." I sighed.
"NO!" A familiar voice shouted at me, his voice making its way through the cracks in the door. All of a sudden the light above me began to flicker and the darkness seemed to close in around me.
"We're not letting you in Death!" The voice repeated, I could tell that the voice belonged to Narcissism but why was he acting like this?
"Why am I not allowed in?" I asked, confusion running a marathon through my voice.
"Because you're a dickhead!" Another voice cried, I could tell that this one was Evil as a few seconds later I heard Innocence sigh at his language.
"We never want to sssee you again Death!" A voice hissed at me, "you don't belong here!"
"Oh my god Death! Will you please just go away!"
"Leave us alone!"
"You ruin everything!"
"Fucking worthless!"

The voices kept pounding against my head from the other side of the door. Finally I had had enough.
"What have I done?!" I yelled.
"Everything!" A voice (belonging to Evil) yelled back at me.
"Why won't you let me in?" My words stumbled slightly as they escaped my mouth.
"Because you ruin everything!" Several voices cheered at me.
"What have I don-"
"It's your fault that everyone has left!" They took it in turn to throw abuse at me. "Why else would they leave?! Love! Happiness!!! And so many others have all gone because of you DEATH! You have ruined our so-called-lives! Fear has been hiding from you for thousands of years, don't you see?! We'd all be better off without you! We don't fucking need you Death! And to be honest we want nothing to fucking do with you! All you do is make people's lives a misery! You take away their souls and leave their fragmented families behind who can no longer feel Love or Happiness or Joy, because you have destroyed them! And that's all you're good at Death! Destroying everything that is good in the world! Destroying anything that has any worth! Because you take it away! You take whatever you fucking want and leave people to pick up the pieces! You complain endlessly about working as if you fucking hate it when we all know that you love tearing people apart! You are rude! You are obnoxious and you are a horrible god-damn piece of filthy work! We wish you were never here and that's why we won't let you in! We want you gone, maybe then the worlds could be a better fucking place without you!"
"I haven't! I haven't!" I cried back at them, clawing desperately against the door, "It's not my fault! They will come back! I promise and the-"
"Pissss off Death!" Spite screamed at me. The door flew open and they stood as if they were a pack of lions waiting to attack their next prey. Their eyes were filled with smoke and their faces stern.
"Please just le-" I begged them this time.
"Fuck off Death!" He cried, grabbing a glass from the side of the bar and throwing it at my feet, "I'll aim for your head, next time!"
"Okay, okay…" I cried stepping backwards, "calm down Spite, please!"
He stared at me one last time, took another glass and flung it at my head. My hands shielded my face but when I brought them back down they were coated with blood.
"Leave usss alone…" He whispered, before walking to the door and slamming it in my face.

I hobbled away from the door and sat on the stairs with my hands bruised, cut and bleeding. And there I sat and cried, because Death has emotions and Death can feel pain.

*A/N= On a serious note: this next bit of the chapter mentions suicide (just thought I'd warn you, in case you didn't feel comfortable reading it, if you want a summary of what happens in the comments then just let me know)*

Now you may be wondering how two humans could have managed to catch Death out, I'll tell you now it'd been a tiring few hundred years and besides; everyone makes mistakes.

I had just taken a quick visit to collect a few souls and allow them to float into the sky when I felt as though I was being dragged somewhere else, to somewhere where I had spent some of my time, to a person who I had been looking over all too well. To a bathtub full of water that was about to be polluted by crimson red blood gushing from a figures wrist and a lifeless and pale body. I could sense that this person was not supposed to leave the mortal world yet, I rushed to him to warn him from ending his life.

That was how I found myself back in the fourth story flat on the edge of the city with the setting sun casting red and purples through the frosted glass mirror of the bathroom. I looked sadly down to the red-haired figure that lay fully clothed in the bath, hair dripping wet, hands trembling as he held onto a blade in his left hand.

"Gerard!" I cried.
He did not flinch at my voice and only peered around the empty room one last time.
"Gerard! It's not your time! Don't you dare eve-"

There was no other way of stopping him, reluctantly I took my human form and stood crying above him; you must understand that it had been a long and tiring day. I grabbed his left wrist and took the blade from his hand before he called Frank's name.

"Gerard…" I began, moving the soaked hair from his eyes, "it's not your time. It's not your time, I'm Death Gerard but do not fear me. It is not your time to see me, you must carry on living because I know that you will find happiness in the future."
"You're Death?" Gerard asked, to my dismay he started grinning slightly.
"Yeah."
"Really?"
"Yes, Gerard. Don't do that again, okay?"
"B-but…" He stuttered, shaking a little from the cold.

The bathroom door whined as it was pushed open. I turned around to see a figure clad in black walk into the room, his arms were blanketed in ink and his lip ring was shining beneath the flickering light. It was of course Frank.

"Listen to me Frank!" I cried desperately, shuffling towards him, "make sure you take good care of Gerard! If I hadn't of been here then he'd probably be dead by now. Please, make sure he is okay…."
"Nah, he's fine…" Frank sighed.
"Can't you see?" I cried, my voice full of frustration, "he almost jus-"
"Wait, you're Death?!" Frank asked, purposefully trying to change the subject. He tilted his head in confusion slightly to the side.
"Yeah. But you need t-"
"Really?"
"Yes, Frank but please ju-" I sighed.
"B-but you're a girl?" Frank laughed.
"No shit."
"So wait…." Frank paused in order to try and select the best words, "Death is a girl?"
"Yes Frank…."
"Ohhhhh…" Frank and Gerard both giggled at the same time before Frank managed to continue, "I bet it must get annoying when people die and are shocked that you're a girl."
I nodded my head slowly, "Just a little."
"Does this shock you?" He asked.

The last thing I remembered was Frank smiling widely and Gerard getting out of the bath and hugging Frank. I wasn't quick enough to stop the vase that he hit me over the head with and I was too late to realise that I had in fact been tricked. They walked from the room and locked the door. A sharp pain blundered inside my head and I was bleeding for the second time that day. I passed out and lay unconscious on the cold bathroom tiles.

Hiya, oh wow...thanks so much for reading, I hope you enjoy the rest too. :D
i didn't mean to really describe death in so much detail really, I tried to focus on introducing characters and Frank and Gerard (later on) but her opinions just kept weaving their way into the story and then it just kinda happened and those opinions about death stayed.
I really hope that the rest will be okay, and thank you so much for reading and the compliments, your comment made me smile, so, um, thanks. :D :)
