Sometimes, They Aren't Always Bad.

Hazel Eyes

Beep, Beep, BEEP!

The screeching of my alarm clock woke me up with a start. First day of school. New vampires, new deaths. Which fucking sucked. I'm Frank, Frank Iero a normal 17 year old kid. I live in Belleville, New Jersey and being in Jersey you see all the things you really shouldn't ever see, no matter how old you are. I live with my best friend, Ray Toro. He's taken care of me since I was like 13, and I appreciated him everyday for it.

I rolled out of bed and turned off my alarm clock, getting tired of the noise. I knew Ray would already be up and getting ready by now seeing as it's 6:00 in the morning. He gets up at 5:30 and does his morning walk thing before actually getting ready for school.

Ray's the kind of kid who would make the honor roll in all the terms at school, making his parents proud. I don't know how it never gets old but they're proud of him every time he comes home with one. Ray doesn't like getting all of the attention in the house but he takes it because he loves his mom and dad. Ray's the shy kid who would never pick a fight unless it was absolutely necessary which, considering our school, would be absolutely necessary if you wanted to live.

Vampires ruled the halls of Belleville High School. They shoved kids into lockers, raped them, and even drank from them at points. Even though that was completely off-limits, the school knew better than challenge the vampires. At least no one has died, yet. The vampire population is growing in number due to people getting changed, or more vampires having babies. I swear they went at it like rabbits sometimes. I remember in the fall the vampire population went up by like 90%. It was crazy!

Needless to say, vampires scared the shit out of me. I heard some of them are so powerful, they could snap your neck without even breaking a sweat. I'm just glad that Ray lives away from that part of the neighborhood. My family and I weren't so lucky. But, that's another topic for a different day.

"Frankie you up?" Ray asked sticking his fro covered head through the door. I loved Ray's massive fro. It was how you knew where he was in a massive crowd, it always stuck out among everybody else's hair.

"Yep." I said rubbing the crusties out of my eyes, waiting for Ray to get out of the room.

"Well, come on. We don't have all day." Ray said opening the door wide open. My boxer briefs were the only thing I had under this blanket and no guy was about to see me half naked.

"Dude, get out. I'm naked." I said chuckling. Ray shook his head and left the room.

"We all have the same parts ,dude." The empty hall carried his high pitched voice back into my room.

"Well, you won't be seeing those parts anytime soon." I yelled back, throwing the covers off my pale body. I was the nice kind of pale that not pure white but not tanned either. My mother used to say I would look like a vampire if I didn't go outside more. I never thought anything of it but I went outside anyway. People still vampire hunt out here, even though it's illegal.

I almost slipped getting out of bed but I caught myself on my white dresser. My black socks were the cause of my almost broken rib and I sighed looking at them, watching my toes wiggle underneath the fabric. I shook my head at my stupidity and pulled out a black 'Misfits' shirt at random. I picked my ripped, black jeans and gave them a whiff. They smelt fairly clean so I pulled them on, wiggling my legs a bit to make the struggle more bearable. As I pulled on my black belt to make sure that my jeans don't fall off, Ray walked into the room.

"Alright come on." Ray said handing me a cup of steaming coffee. Ray was always the kind of person to think about you before he thought about himself. I took it with a smile and grabbed my phone, bag, and keys before following Ray down the stairs. I always thank the Lord that Ray could drive because I knew my lazy ass was not getting up before dawn to walk to school.

It was cloudy and rainy today. Surprise, surprise. The weather in Belleville never changed unless we were in winter. In Spring and Fall we got rain non-stop. In Winter it just got colder and we got snow instead of rain.

I silently cursed myself for not bringing a jacket and my short sleeved shirt wasn't helping. As I got in the car and Ray turned it on, I blasted the heat. I looked into the backseat finding my black sweatshirt that I leave in the back just in case. I tried to reach back and grab the black fabric but my fingers missed it by an inch. I turned around and kneeled against the cushion pushing my ass out extra hard trying to get my sweatshirt.

"Your ass is in my face." Ray said looking at me uncomfortably as I pulled on my warm sweatshirt.

"Live with it Toro." I scoffed putting my butt back into the seat. He sighed and put the car into reverse. The tires squealed as we turned corners, the water on the road making it a bit slippery.

"Sorry, Frank." Ray said as we slipped in the parking lot. Kids walked by, throwing us shady glances like we were pieces of food.

'Vampires.' I thought to myself.

"Toro, if you kill me. I'll come back and haunt you." I said pulling up my hood hoping that it would cover my face from the harsh rain.

"I'd be honored." Ray snickered getting out of the car. Kids in dark clothes with black umbrellas surrounded us from all directions. We all wore black at this school. Occasionally there was a kid who wore white or red and I silently prayed for them. Everyone knew that red was a vampires favorite color, it made them hungry. Everyone wore black or some shade of dark clothing. It made you less visible the the vampires because we were all wearing basically the same thing. Wearing black was like an unspoken arrangement here.

Ray and I got our schedules a week before the year started. We didn't want to have the problem of getting our schedules in a crowded office with vampires, and fertiles. We learned that Freshman year when we were late to almost every class we had for the first few days. Yep, not making that mistake again.

Kids flew by us in hopes to get to their class where a teacher was before a vampire could corner them into lockers, demanding to feed from them. Everyone was afraid here, that's why we always learned to have someone with us at all times, and watch our own backs if we can't. It's second nature here. Never stay out after dark, never live alone, always have a loaded weapon in your house. You know, the regular Jersey rules. Only cranked up to 11.

"Hey! Watch where you're going!" A guy yelled as he rammed into me. He was definitely a vampire. His hair was brown, greasy, and fell on his shoulders. He was growing a little bit of scruff on his face and I honestly found it disgusting. I could only tell he was a vampire by his pale skin.

It was so white compared to mine. It looked as if I had gone to Hawaii and got a glorious tan. Okay, maybe that's an exaggeration. His skin was an off- white shade, like an eggshell or a pearl. His teeth were so yellow compared to his skin and they were a bit cracked in some places.

"S-sorry." I squeaked off turning back to Ray so we could go to class together. The guy grabbed my arm and pulled me back towards him. I let a surprised shriek but didn't try to pull away. Vampires love it if you put up a fight, it just makes them even hungrier for some reason. They'll let you go only to have you run for a few seconds before they drag you back in. The chase is over before you can even blink and then you're either dead, or you wake up in a hospital.

"Know your place human," He said tightening his grip on my wrist. The flesh under his hand pulled together and if he pushed any harder my bone would've been broken. "I should just fucking show you who the fuck-"

"Let go of him Bert," A guy said appearing out from the rushing crowd. No one had stopped to help and Ray was just standing there a few feet away hoping that I would live. "He knows his place." The guy said pulling Bert's hand off of my wrist harshly, with what looked like no effort at all.

"But can't you just smell him? Just a small taste." I shivered at his words. It was more of a statement than a question and it scared the shit out of me.

"No. Not now," The guy said letting Bert's hand go. "You'll get caught and you know it." The guy said in a calm voice. Bert's eyes were on me as he stomped away. They had turned amber in sometime in this endeavor signalling that he was hungry. I as going to turn away when the guy gently grabbed my forearm, away from where the Bert guy had grabbed me. Of course I didn't put up a struggle and just stood there, waiting for him to let me go.

"Are you alright?" He asked looking at me with concern.

"Uh. Y-yeah?" I said back tentatively. It wasn't everyday that a vampire asked you if you were okay. And I could tell he was a vampire because one, he had abnormally pale skin and two, no other human alive would ever stand up to a vampire like that. The guy smirked and shook his head.

"Look, I'm not going to hurt you okay? Just want to make sure the the asshole didn't hurt you too bad." He said lifting up the wrist part on my sweatshirt. He made a 'tsk' noise with his tongue when he saw the reddening skin under his hand. He pushed down the fabric carefully back in his place and smiled.

"Y-yeah, I'm f-fine. Th-thank you." I stuttered out again, still in his grip. He smiled and chuckled, shaking his head again. HIs teeth were white, unlike Bert's and they almost matched his skin tone. You should never trust a vampire that smiles. It means that they either wanna kill you, or that they wanna rape you. There's no inbetween.

He was wearing a grey sweatshirt with black jeans and converse. His black hair fell almost shoulder length and swooped across his forehead comfortably. He carried a messenger back on his shoulder that had little monsters sewed to it, including vampires. Which, I thought was quite funny.

The thing that stood out about this guy wasn't his pale skin, or his unusual small teeth that poked out when he smiled, or even his black fingernails. It was his hazel eyes. They were all I could look at. They weren't like normal vampires eyes, and that's what shocked me. Normally vampires eyes are a bright color, almost like you could turn off the light and still see their eyes. They were usually a bright blue or a bright green.

His were very dulled down. But the green flecks in them sparkled in front of the light brown that they sat on. His eyes were a mix of soft colors unlike other vampires. I could tell he wasn't hungry because his eyes weren't the amber color Bert's had been moments ago. They were just calm and caring. Most of the time when you see a vampire their eye are amber because being in a school of humans can do things to them I guess. I don't know how long I wasn't staring at his eyes but, it must have been only a couple of seconds because he replied.

"Alright well I'll see you around then." The guy said letting go of my fragile arms. He waved and set off into the crowd, going Bert's way. All I could think about was those hazel eyes.

"Dude, are you okay? I thought we were going to die!" Ray exclaimed wrapping a hand around my shoulder leading me to class.

"Yeah, I'm fine." I said still thinking about the guy that saved me. I was still in a little bit of shock because I've never known, or heard of anybody being saved by a vampire. Not even once. It was just mind boggling.

"Bob saved us some seats in biology." Ray said pulling me along to class by the shoulders.

I'm not gay, or at least I don't think I am but the way he looked at me. With a caring and concerned expression, and the way that he gently held my arm made my stomach erupt with butterflies. Everyone knows how socially wrong it is to be gay. And I didn't want to be the gay outcast amongst straight, judgy vampires.

All I know is that I want to see him again. But, maybe I got my wish a little too soon.
