Shattered

001 - Broken Glass

Frank was almost finished making up a bed in the spare room for his new foster sibling, and he wasn't happy about it. His mother and Steve hadn't bought a new foster kid to stay with them for about a year now and when they finally decided to do it again, they get a teenager. Frank was totally fine when it was young kids but he'd heard teenager foster kids steal. They had never had a teenage foster. He knew the teenager joining them was a girl, so they probably wouldnt have anything in common either. And being in the foster system at her age probably meant she had toughened-up enough that she was a total bitch.

Her looks probably wouldn't be great either. Since his mother was a social worker Frank had seen a lot of these teenage girls from group homes, and their physical appearance was often as rough as their tough personas. So Frank wasn't expecting eye candy to walk through the door.

The whole situation was not one that Frank wanted to be a part of. But his mother was one of those good samaritan types and he loved that about her, so he'd play along as best he could and keep the complaints to a minimum. And Steve? Well Steve was like Frank. He just went along with whatever made Linda happy.

***

Frank had finished everything he needed to do that day. He wanted to go visit Ray or Gerard and Mikey but his mom insisted he be home when this girl arrived. Whatever. He'd say his hellos and then he'd go see his friends.

Just as he was strumming his guitar to kill time, he heard the car pull up in the driveway. They were here. Frank slowly got up and put his guitar down but he didn't bother to go all the way out the front to meet them. He'd be sent out there to help grab her bags later anyway. He headed to the door just as it was opening and Steve and his mom were coming inside.

"Hey Frank. Good your home. This is Evie." Linda said.

Evie stepped inside slowly and Frank got his first look at her.

Everything Frank had imagined had been wrong. Standing in front of him was the most beautiful teenage girl he'd ever seen. Her hair was a mixture of browns in soft wavy curls and her frame was delicate and petite and she was just shorter than Frank.

Evie looked at Frank and then averted her gaze quickly as if nervous. It was enough for Frank to catch a glimpse of her lovely blue eyes set against her flawless creamy skin. Frank couldn't help himself. He just kept staring and taking in her beauty. Safe to say this girl did not look like a thief. Suddenly going to visit his friends wasn't quite so appealing.

"H-hi." Evie stuttered shyly.

"Hello." Frank said back.

The two stared at each other for a few moments, Evie unable to look directly into Franks eyes longer than a second at a time under his piercing gaze and looking around the room instead.

"Frank why don't you help Evie carry her bags inside then you can show her her new room." Steve suggested and then he and Linda went to have a rest after their long drive.

Frank couldn't take his eyes off the new foster kid, he was not expecting this at all. Evie looked over to him confused. "It's just us? No other kids?" She asked.

"Just us." Frank answered. He noticed Evie seemed to be generally nervous and wondered if it was just because this was a new house, new family. "I'll get your bags for you." Frank said and went to walk outside. Evie went with him and helped and then Frank showed her upstairs to where her room was, across the hall from his.

"My own room?" Evie asked looking kind of shocked.

Frank looked at her strangely. "Of course, sorry about all the pink."

She looked around "Where's your room?"

"Just there." He pointed to his bedroom door.

"Where do Linda and Steve sleep?" She asked.

"Downstairs." Frank answered and Evie nodded.

"So.. what are the rules?" She asked.

Frank wasn't used to being asked the rules by the kids that came into Linda's care. He wasn't usually the authority of the house and they usually didn't even ask, they just did as they pleased. He scratched his head trying to think of what to tell her. "Uhm, well curfew for me is midnight but i don't usually follow that, I don't know about yours. We all pitch in around the house with chores and stuff. There's not really any set rules for teens only the younger kids when we have them. Just don't swear alot in front of Steve and Linda."

Evie nodded. She could handle that. "Are you their real kid? Or are you like me?"

"I'm Linda's son. Steve's like my stepdad, but they're not married."

"Oh."

There was a pause where the room was silent. Frank looked around thinking of what to say. When he looked back to Evie, he saw that she was looking into his eyes. She cast her eyes away when he looked back at her, unable to hold his gaze.

"You seem nervous. Are you ok?" Frank asked.

Evie nodded quickly and tried to look more confident. It didnt work. "Are, uhm, Linda and Steve nice?"

Frank almost smiled at her strange questions. She seemed fearful to be asking them. "Well I think they are, even though they piss me off some times."

"What happens if you do something wrong here?"

Frank was starting to work it out now. The strange line of questions. She wanted to know what she was in for. Frank had heard what went on in some foster homes and it wasn't nice. If Evie had ever been in one of those homes he could understand why she would ask questions like this. He decided to answer simply. "Basically nothing. You just get a long talking to. Some times they yell, but they try not to."

Evie nodded and seemed to relax a bit at Frank's answer. Frank noticed and felt bad for her, she'd probably taken a hit or two from carers when she'd done something wrong. Poor girl.

Frank found himself staring at her again. He looked over her figure and although she could definitely use a good meal, it was lovely. Just a bit too skinny. He couldn't wait for Gerard, Mikey and Ray to see her. They would be so jealous that Frank got to live with a girl this sexy and beautiful. They had all been expecting a trainwreck. He decided to go call them now and let them know the good news. They might want to come over and see her.

"I'll leave you to get settled in." Frank said, and only because she seemed so intimidated he added. "I'll be around if you need anything. Just come find me ok?"

***

Evie's POV:

Frank seemed nice. But they usually do at first. He seems so much older than he is, and it sounds like he does whatever he wants. But this is Linda and Steve's house, not Frank's so they must be in charge. Although Frank was the one who got my stuff and showed me to my room. And i was instructed to find him if I need anything, so... is Frank in charge? I'm confused.

My room is nice. Maybe too nice. I'll have to be careful to keep it looking untouched. If these people really are nice like Frank says, then the best way to not be sent back is to be invisible. Don't leave anything out of place. Don't talk too much. People don't like it when you talk too much. Men especially. I probably already pissed Frank off by asking too many questions.

I sat on the bed and let out a long sigh. It's so comfortable. So much better than the beds back at the group home. As long as I get to be alone in this bed, thats all I want. Frank and Steve both seem nice, maybe they'd let me be. Or even if they don't, maybe they'll be happy enough if I blow them occasionally. The thought terrifies me but I need a plan so I have to think about these things.

That's what I'll do. If Frank or Steve come in here at night, I'll try to work them down to just a blow job.

I began putting my clothes in the drawers. It only took me about 10 minutes to settle in. I don't have much. Clothes, a couple of books, some make-up and toiletries, and only a few other things, and they all fit into the drawers.

In his room, Frank called Gerard. He answered on the third ring.

"Hey Frank."

"Oh my God dude. You gotta see this girl." Frank said, dramatically.

"Really? She's THAT bad?" Gerard replied.

"No. No she is the opposite Gee. She is so fucking hot."

Frank heard Gerard turn away from the phone to talk to his brother. "Hey Mikey, Frank says his new little sister is a babe."

"Please dont call her my sister. I'm having unholy thoughts about her." Frank said.

"Alright how hot are we talking? Should Mikey, Ray and I come over?"

"Definitely." Frank answered and then there was a knock at his bedroom door. "Come over. Gotta go." He said and hung up the phone. He turned to the door. "Come in!"

Evie crept in slowly so she was standing just inside the doorway holding her toothbrush. "Uhm, I was just wondering which bathroom I'm supposed to use? I wanted to freshen up."

Frank looked her up and down. Couldn't help himself. "We'll be sharing one. Mom and Steve have their own downstairs." He nodded in the direction of the bathroom as he picked up his guitar. "Ours is just down the hall to the right. Evie went to walk out. "Hey Evie" Frank said and she turned back. "When your done, come back in here."

"O-ok." She said. It wasn't a question, it was a command. She knew it. He wanted her to come back to his room after she freshened up. This could be very bad, or it could be completely innocent. She had no idea which but she felt sick in her stomach.

Evie went and brushed her teeth, found a place for her toiletries, then made her way back into Frank's room. She closed his bedroom door slowly behind her. She turned and faced him nervously.

Frank looked up at her expression and frowned. "You ok? You look really scared."

Evie looked down. "What did you want me for?"

Frank was confused, she was fine a minute ago and now she was like a wilting flower. "I just wanted to talk. Hangout, you know? Come sit down."

Her eyes went wide but she got it together and stepped forward. He wanted her to sit on his bed with him. She still had no idea whether this was going to be innocent or awful. She very slowly sat herself down on the edge of Frank's bed and didn't look at him.

Frank looked at her so confused. He had no idea what to make of this. She was moving like at any moment the floor was going to open up and swallow her. She seemed wary of him. Maybe she'd had some violent foster brothers or something. He decided not to say anything about it. Even reassuring her might make her more uncomfortable. "You like music Evie?" He asked.

"Yeah of course." Evie replied. "You play guitar hey?"

"Mmm-hmm." Frank said and began strumming softly. The didn't talk for a moment and Evie got a chance to really look at Frank while he looked down at his guitar. He was gorgeous. His eyes were so soft and beautiful. This was not the face of a man who hurt girls. Something about his face put her more at ease and she began to relax now.

"Are you in a band?" She asked.

"Yeah kinda. We dont do shows or anything yet." Frank answered. He looked up and saw that Evie was finally looking at him properly. Now he had a chance to look into her eyes. He stopped strumming his guitar and didn't think before speaking. "You are really beautiful."

Evie suddenly looked down uncomfortably. "Uhm.." She began.

Frank regretted it instantly and felt like an idiot. He was thinking it. He hadnt meant to say it out loud. "God. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that." He shook his head and looked back down at his hands on his guitar.

"N-no, uhm. Thank you." Evie responded, surprising herself at how well she was keeping it together when Frank had basically just told her he was attracted to her. Maybe it was because she was attracted to him also. That still didn't mean she wanted him to touch her. She wanted to change the subject. "Are we going to go to school together?"

"Yeah. I can drive in the mornings too." Frank answered.

"Oh great." Evie said and smiled, but Frank got the feeling she didn't really mean that.

Just then Frank noticed Evie visibly flinched and her eyes shot to the door. Gerard, Mikey and Ray all walked into Frank's room. Evie seemed to panic and instinctively inched away from them and closer to Frank.

The guys didn't seem to notice but Frank did.

"Hey Frankie." Gerard greeted him then turned his attention to the girl. "You must be E-" He stopped talking when he looked at her, then finished "-vie." Frank had been right. This girl was amazing. Ray and Mikey all held the same shocked expression and Frank spoke up to break the silence.

"We were just talking about school. Evie's going to be at our school. She'll probably be in your grade Mikey."

Mikey looked at Frank and back to Evie. "Oh cool, maybe we'll have some classes together."

Evie nodded and looked back to Frank. Frank introduced everyone to Evie and then Evie made an excuse to leave the room and went downstairs. She did not want to be in a room with 4 teenage boys any more than she had to be.

***

"How the hell did you end up with THAT as a foster sister. Lucky asshole." Gerard said and Frank laughed.

"I know. Hit the jackpot right? She doesn't talk a whole lot and I think she's scared of me but she's so hot it doesn't matter." Frank said.

Mikey chuckled "She can probably already tell your a creep."

Frank scoffed. "Am not. And I think she's just scared of everyone. See how quickly she left when you guys showed up?"

Ray nodded. "I think it's just her first day here so she's just getting her bearings."

"Probably right." Gerard said.

***

A couple of hours later when the boys had left Frank decided to go downstairs for a while. Steve and Linda had gone to do the shopping.

Frank walked into the kitchen where Evie was drinking a glass of water looking out the window with her back turned to him She mustn't have heard him walk in because when he said hi to her she jumped and dropped the glass, letting it shatter into pieces on the kitchen floor.

That did it. The fear she'd been trying to keep contained all day spilled out as rapidly as the water that was in the glass. She dropped to her knees and started picking up the large pieces of broken glass and burst into tears glancing back at Frank. "I-I'm sorry. I'll clean it up. I d-didn't mean it."

Frank instantly went towards her to help and grabbed her wrists so she wouldn't cut her hands trying to pick up the glass. She dropped the pieces she was holding. "Stop Evie."

Evie panicked but didn't fight Frank. She just whimpered and looked up into his eyes. "Please don't tell Steve and Linda. I-I'll replace the glass. I promise." She pulled herself out of Frank's wrists and went back to trying to clean up the mess. Frank grabbed her again, causing her to yelp as he startled her.

"Evie. Evie stop, your going to hurt yourself. Calm down." Frank was suitably freaked out by her reaction to a meaningless broken glass. She was absolutely panicking over nothing but he knew he had to get the situation under control. She was crying and hyperventilating and trying to get out of his grasp so she could clean up the mess. In the commotion, she had suffered a tiny cut to her hand and a few drops of blood were trickling down her finger. Frank simply held her tighter and pulled her into his lap and shushed her. Poor girl had just about lost her mind over a two-dollar drinking glass.

He rocked her back and forth. "Shhhh, Evie. It's ok. It's ok. You're alright. Show me your hand."

Evie's breathing hitched as she said "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Please don't tell Steve and Linda." Her eyes begged his. She shivered in his embrace.

Frank heart hurt to watch her panic like this. Never had any of the foster kids that had lived there freaked out like this. Tantrums, yes. But this girl seemed to think she'd committed a felony for breaking a stupid glass on her first day. "Mom and Steve won't care sweetie ok? You're not in trouble." She went quiet and trembled in Frank's embrace, sitting in his lap on the floor, breathing heavily. "Sweetie your shaking." Frank whispered.

Evie just repeated. "Please don't tell them."

Frank sighed. "Ok, shhh, ok I won't. I won't tell them." He said, just to calm her, even though he knew they wouldn't have cared anyway.

"Thank you." Evie whispered back and began to calm down.

Frank was starting to think that maybe she got more than just a few hits from her previous carers. Maybe more like a few brutal beatings.

He spoke to her softly, gently. "Do you think we can get up and take care of your hand now?"

Evie sniffled and nodded, looking up at Frank with tears in her eyes.
