One more bite won't hurt
Court- Witness (pt. 4)
"John Nicholson?" asked a woman in a long black cloak who wore a small black pencil skirt.
"Uh, yeah. That's um, that be me." the bearded man slurred as he leant against the side of the wooden box. The ragged man's tracky bottoms trailing on the floor and cloaked in dirt.
"You say that you saw some suspicious behaviour around the area on the night that Kaitlin was killed. Yes?"
"Uh, yeah, think so."
"And what night was this on?"
"uh, would of been the...um, the 8th. No, I-I mean the 7th sorry. When you live on the streets you really lose track of the days."
"Okay..." she continued without a care in the world, "What did you see?"
"Well..." he thought, "I was sat underneath a street lamp. On curb street. You know; the one near the woods. And I was sat there. And I was just gunna settle down for the night. You know... And well I saw this very pretty young lady. She had like; long blonde hair and she was like very good looking and all that. And she had like big boots on and yeah and that. And she ran past me. An' I was gunna be like: "Hey love, you okay?" but by the time I was gunna speak she had gone an' she ran off into the woods. After a bit this other guy walked past me an he went into the woods too."
"Describe what this man looked like."
"Well, he was like. He was like. Sorta medium height. He had a bag with him an' I think that he had like red hair but it was kinda hard to see because it was so dark and that."
"Okay. Did he have any gloves on?"
"Uh, probably. I don't know. Like I can't remember."
"And now John Nicholson, shall we learn a little about you before we jump to conclusions?" She didn't wait for an answer before she continued, "You have been homeless for what, 4 years now?"
"Er, yeah, but I don't think that that has got anything to do with this." He mumbled back looking confused.
"Oh believe me. It does. I think that this courtroom would also like to know that you a heroine addict. Have been hooked for years. And not just heroine, anything that you can get your hands on, right?"
"Yes, but I am getting better. I am getting help soon but its hard when you don't have a home to go back to, you know." He replied defensively.
"And also. You have been involved in the court before, haven't you?"
"It was just the one time."
"Haven't you?" She asked more sternly.
"Yes."
"And no offence, Mr. Nicholson, a history of violent misconduct, drug abuse, alcoholism and a case where you where charged with perverting the cause of justice. Well, I think that that makes your statement pretty illegitimate. For all we know, you could have been drunk, hallucinating or simply god damn lying about this apparent man!"
"But I ain't! I'm telling the truth, I am! I swear!" he pleaded.
"Stop!" The judge cried, cutting in massively, "The evidence here does not come from a valid source. All information given from John Nicholson must be ruled out."
Phew! Gerard whispered under his breath. He took a mental picture of the witness. Nobody went against Gerard like that.
