Pretty Things...

Eight

“Princess you’ll be fine. You’re gonna be with Andy all day and then I’ll come pick you up after that, okay?”

“No.”

The whimper that left their throat was tearing me apart. I brushed their hair out of their eyes and kissed their forehead.

“I’ve got stuff to do that I can’t take you to do or I would okay? Do you want me to walk to Andy with you?”

“I want to go with you-“

“And I don’t want you getting hurt so you’re going to school.”

They looked down at their lap and played with their skirt. I lifted their chin and kissed them quickly about the same time Andy knocked on their window making the jump.

“Go with Andy baby.”

“I-“

“Go. With. Andy.”

“Okay.”

They grabbed their bag out of the backseat and pecked my cheek before opening the door. Andy leaned into the car for a second and questioned me with his eyes.

“Bert or any of his friends. He goes anywhere near Gee Patrick needs to get them out of the way and then you do what you do.”

“Okay. They’ll be safe with me.”

“I know they will.”

He shut the door and walked behind Gee slightly. Just enough to give them personal space but to jump on anyone if he needs too. I let out the breath I was holding and pulled away from the school heading to the brink of heaven and the beginning of hell. I watched as the houses seemed to thin out and the road fade away and turn to a dirt path. I kept driving until there was a black wrought iron gate that was falling apart slowly. I stopped and got out of the car seeing the raven haired girl standing just on the other side.

“Frankie!”

I smiled as my twin bounced up and down at the sight of me. I walked up to the gate and she touched it which made it fall over with a thud.

“Oops.”

I smiled as she jumped into my arms and I squeezed her back. She put her face in my neck and giggled loudly.

“Have your scars gotten better?”

“A bit but they still hurt when I get close to here.”

Truth is I had a set of wings many years ago but thanks to the same person god sent to kill our mom I don’t anymore. She pulled away and smiled sadly rubbing at her eyes a bit.

“Hey don’t do that!”

“What?”

“Cry! I got them out-“

“Is Gee okay? They’re happy right-“

“Yes they’re fine but…someone is trying to take them.”

“Where are they?”

“With Andy and Patrick.”

“But what if-“

“They won’t.”

“What about-“

“Nope.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

“I have to go now.”

“Bye love you.”

“Love you too.”

She bounded off with a sad look in her eyes and I turned back towards my car and laid down on the hood because I felt the flashback coming in fast.

“Mama! Look at this!”

I held up a leaf that was a deep maroon color and she smiled at me pulling me up into her lap as Piper drew in the dirt with a stick next to our dad’s shoes. My mom was beautiful. Dark hair and light eyes.

“It’s beautiful Frankie.”

My dad looked up and smiled at me as I held out the leaf for him to see. My mama was an angel. She tickled my sides making me giggle and squirm in her lap. I managed to squirm out of her arms and to the ground next to Piper. Piper’s wings were and ashy gray like mine but were much smaller. I fixed her feathers and she jumped on me. We rolled around on the ground for a while play fighting with each other until something caught my ear and I stopped and sat up.

“Brendon…”

“What is it-Sarah take them and go.”

“I’m not leaving you alone.”

“Mama?”

“It’s okay Piper.”

I looked to where my mom was staring and saw an angel with wings that were almost as big as my dad’s. I screamed a bit but my mom covered my mouth and picked up me and Piper. She put us into a hollow tree trunk and put a blanket over us. But we could still see through it as she backed up a bit and was grabbed being drug through the border. My dad lunged at him but was only pushed back towards the ground like he was shoved by someone. My mom took off flying but a whip wrapped around her leg and pulled her back towards the ground. I pushed out of our little hole and ran towards my mama and about the same time I got to her the whip was brought down. I thought it had missed me until I heard Piper scream and saw my dad start crawling towards me. I stumbled back a bit and tripped over something only to see it was my wings. I watched in horror as the man stood over my mom and pulled out a knife and started sawing through the bone. I screamed and cried but couldn’t find the strength to move as I listened to her whimper in pain and watched her try to crawl away. She smiled at me a bit and muttered something.

“I love you.”

I panicked then and Piper came running to me only to be grabbed by the man and he carried off Piper, mine, and my mama’s wings. I got up stumbling around on my uncoordinated five-year old feet and fell down next to my mom’s head.

“Mama?”

I shook her shoulders gently and felt my dad pick me up. I started to squirm around but soon gave up because I didn’t have the strength.

“Daddy, we can’t leave Mama!”

“Frankie-“

“We can’t leave Mama!”

“Frankie-“

“MAMA!”

“Frankie she’s dead!”

“B-But angels can’t die…”

“She’s dead.”

----------

I sat across from my dad who looked a little hopeful because I had spoken to Piper.

“Can she-“

“The Morning Star was still on her wrist dad.”

“Oh…”

“I want her to come home too.”

“I know.”

“I want Mom-“

“I do too.”

“Would things be different if I didn’t run out there?”

“They would’ve taken both of you. Your mom would still be dead but nothing else would’ve changed.”

“Oh.”

“She was okay wasn’t she?”

“Yeah.”

About the same time he opened his mouth to say something my phone started to ring. Why the hell is Andy calling me? I answered it and he sounded out of breath.

“Patrick…and Gee-“

“Are they okay?”

“T-They’re gone.”
