Tips, Tricks, & Hacks: Writing Fanfiction
Covers
Covers are basically makeup for books, stories, or fanfics. They help your fanfic to become more pretty and appealing to the eye. If you have a great cover, most likely, people will be interested in the fanfic. Without a cover, it can make it look boring or sketchy. The phrase, "Don't judge a book by it's cover" can apply, but everyone looks for appearance. It's human nature.
Here are some suggestions:
-A cover should consist of the title, the author's name (optional), and a picture/pictures of aspects in the book. The main character(s) are often depicted on covers. You can also use pictures of the character's hobbies, an event in the book, anything that relates to the fanfic. Logos can be used too and they're usually pretty eye catching.
-Colors should be pretty neutral. Bright covers can also look good if they're made well and don't look tacky. Black and white tends to be my favorite for colors on covers because they stand out and can practically match with anything.
-There are many websites where you can create covers. PicMonkey is one of my favorites as well as Canva. You can Google search them and they'll come up.
With PicMonkey, you'll want to click the link that says, "PicMonkey's Photo Editor | Free Online Image Editing" (otherwise you may have to pay, so this is the free option). Go to "Design" (just hold your cursor over it and it'll slide down with options). In MCR fanfiction, you have a Facebook cover type layout, so once the options bar slides out underneath the "Design" tab, you want to click "Facebook cover." From there, you can create anything you want. You can add images, text, designs, stamps, etc. Unless you've paid, you cannot use anything with the golden crown beside it.
Canva is more for Wattpad or any other websites requiring a square cover, which Mibba sites don't often have. Just go to "Free Online Book Cover Maker" on Canva and start designing using templates!
PicMonkey is my personal preference since I mostly write on this site and it can create amazing covers very easily. I recommend it to everyone.
I know it isn't a thing here, but on AO3 tagging is such an issue and saying things like "this sucks" and "Oh why did I write this." does not make you want to read it. :(
