The Death Flower

Chapter 1

Gerard pov.

I sit in my classroom, twiddling my thumbs back and forth as I await for the professor to arrive to class. It's not like Professor Smith to be late, but none of us will question it, I know. We fear for our punishments too much to even think of doing something like that. The punishments are a little..harsher than what they used to be. Much more so than what they were before the new government was put in order ten years ago. Many things were changed for the worse. We kind of just had to get used to it, I suppose.

My fellow classmates around me are loudly talking amongst themselves. Some sit on the desks neatly arranged around the rooms, some are circled around talking in their friend groups and some are on the floor, chatting about whatever topics are on their minds at the moment. They all have one thing in common that I don' have, something I wish I had. They continue to talk, as the clock ticks away the time, shredding meaningless seconds of their lives away.

Then there's me.

I sit upright perfectly and am silent in my desk, as I await for the professor. My classmates tease me for acting how I act. The so called, ''perfect' student they call me. It's not that I am loyal to the government or to the way they treat us, no, it's far from that. Its the fact that I'd rather not be whipped until my already thin skin bleeds, or thrown off of the roof of the two story brick school. I'm not making those up either, those are very minor punishments that have been given to many kids, and they are not even allowed to go to the hospital if needed until at least three hours after the punishment is given. Things were made to be very harsh for the exact reason that no one would rebel. And I have to say, for ten years no one has, aside from maybe two people for were executed immediately. No one tried after that.

I can hear footsteps nearing the closed wooden classroom door, and students scramble to their desks, hoping to not get in trouble or caught for not being prepared before the professor arrives in the classroom.

I can see the silver doorknob turn and in walks Professor Smith in his brown suit jacket and black pants. He holds a clipboard and a bunch of papers in his right hand, and fixes his slightly crooked glasses with his left.

"Hello, class." He greets, his formal tone the same as it is everyday.

"Hello, Professor Smith." We all greet back, our tones emotionless and cold, like a robot's.

He sets his items down on his desk, sorting out some papers and looking very closely at them, mouthing to himself. After he's sorted out the papers he looks at us, a forced smile on his face.

I can tell he hates this.

"Today is a very important day, as you all know." He says, his hands linked behind his back as he paces back and forth in the front of the classroom, eyeing every one of us as if we've done something wrong. "For it is the tenth anniversary of the perfect new government being placed in order and saving us all from the wreckage and havoc that was America before it."

His words sound like they are from a script, like they had to be rehearsed for hours. But I know they aren't they're from his mind, from his endless devotion to this government.

"We are going to be going over how the government came into our those wonderful ten years ago, and how it saved us. After that we will be reading more myths as we did last month."

I groan internally at the part where we have to learn about how our government came into order. We learn about it every year, but more and more details are added every year as we mature, making the discussion even longer. Sometimes I feel like the only person who isn't endlessly devoted to the government.

The other part however, about reading myths is the only enjoyment I seem to get out of life these days. It brings me out of reality and into a whole new world where life isn't constantly controlled and things aren't real, where anything can happen.

"Alright, class." He starts, pulling out a stool and setting it out in front of the class where we can se him clearly. "We are going to start from the very beginning." He pulls out a book, the same one I've seen every year since high school has started. He licks the tip of his finger and flips to a page. I shudder, but try not to show it. That is a major pet peeve of mine, but if I showed my irritation, I'd surely be whipped our something much worse.

"It all started when our glorious leader today, Chancellor Gates took over America with a new and more improved plan than the useless democracy we had been using since the start of America. The democracy was pointless, and this new idea excited people. It showed them a new side to America, one they thought was never possible. He announced it on the day of March 15, 2006 and it has been in order ever since, as you all know. He made us turn in our belongings, our clothes, everything that made us individuals, everything that made us who we are. It made us like clones. Perfect people who had no individuality, but very much power. Individuality is dangerous. It is the sole reason the once democracy of America failed in the first place. It is why we are who we are today, the same. It has saved us. Because of this new found government, we are now considered the most powerful country in the world. We destroyed China, Russia, and North Korea all in one war. This war made them slave countries to us. If they disobey one rule, they will be demolished. Ever since this, we have been the most powerful, the most ruthless country to ever be known, and we should be proud. Proud that we have succeeded so much, that every country in the world will bow down to us in the blink of an eye. Chancellor Gates has saved us, and that only a small amount of why we should be loyal to him until the end of time."

He finishes his speech, wiping away a few tears at the end. These people are way too loyal to a government that has done nothing but destruct its people and the world around them. Sure, we are the most powerful country, but we are also the most messed up country, destroying our people within the land of what we call America.

......

"Alright class, take out your book of myths and turn to page 534." Professor Smith says, and we all obey him, like..clones as he described us. We all wear the same colors, white and we all have the same hair color and eyes. Brown and hazel. It really is horrible.

I turn to the page that he has told us to turn to and look at the book before me.

The Death Flower.

I feel like I've heard that before.

I study the title page, rereading the title over and over again trying to figure out where I have heard it before.I know I've heard it before. From my mother, I know she has mentioned it.

On the title page, there sits a flower, what looks like a black rose with a dark red seeping in the middle. The stem is black and pointy thorns adorn the stem. It looks like an image from my memories, but I cant quite recall exactly where from.

I know this image will haunt me for hours.

"Today we will be reading about a myth called the Death Flower." Professor Smith announces. "This myth is different than the others we have read throughout the year however. It has a darker story behind the others we have read. Although, I think you all will enjoy it very much." He smiles.

He picks up his book and reads the first sentence.

"The Death Flower, both a blessing and a curse, it ruined my life, but saved it at the same time."
