Chapter 12
The taxi stopped way too fast. I was not ready. I mean, i was ready, but i wasn't ready. I didn't know. I closed my eyes and tried to relax myself by breathing calmly.
"So, eh, are you going to tip me or..?" I opened my eyes and glared at him.
"Would you give me a minute?" I said irritably. I closed my eyes again. But the taxi driver was tapping on the steering wheel, i couldn't concentrate. I pulled out my wallet and paid him, but i didn't leave a tip.
"Eyy, what about the tip?" I stared at him.
"Fuck off." And i slammed the door shut.
I started walking up and down the street. People who saw me must have thought i was crazy or something. But i was just really nervous. What if she doesn't want to meet me? Or what if she doesn't even remember me? Maybe she'll just shut the door. What happens then? It would have been a waste of money. Eventually i stopped outside her house. It was big, the yard was full of flowers and the grass was really green. 'It's now or never' i thought as i walked up to the gate and opened it. It squeaked a little. I walked to the door, my palms were starting to get really wet. I knocked. It felt like forever before i heard steps and the door opened. I looked at my feet.
"H-hello.. um.. i am looking for someone named Sophie Williams. It says she live here?" I handed the paper over. A pair of wrinkly hands took it. Woah wait- wrinkly? I looked up.
"Let me go ask my husband if he knows anything about this Sophie." It was an old lady. Sophie didn't even live here! "Come in dear." She took my hand and lead me into the living room. It was old, the wallpaper had yellowed and ornaments were dusty. It smelled old too. It was a typical old people house. The lady disappeared into the kitchen, and when she came back she handed me a glass of milk and put a plate of Oreos on the coffee table next to me.
"Oh no you don't have-" The lady cut me off.
"Don't be silly. Wait here and i'll go get Charlie." I twitched when she said my name.
"What?" I looked at her confused.
"My husband. His name is Charlie." The lady looked just as confused as i did.
"Oh. That's my name too." I smiled and the old lady laughed.
"Would you look at that! Charlie, come here! I have someone i want you to meet!" I heard footsteps and then an old man came in. He looked tired.
"Who is this?" He sat down in a chair and the lady sat down next to him.
"This is Charlie. She has something to ask you." Mr. Charlie snorted.
"Charlie? Isn't that a boys name? And you have long hair, you aren't a boy are you?" I shook my head.
"You must speak to him dear, he can't see without his glasses." I blushed.
"No, i am not a boy."
"Only someone like my daughter would give a girl a boys name." He sighed. "Silly girl."
"His daughter got pregnant when she was very young. She left the baby with the father and his soon to be wife." This caught my attention.
"Oh.. and her name, is it Sophie?" Mr. Charlie put on his glasses and looked at me surprised.
"Sophie?" I nodded. "You look just like her." I froze. These were my grandparents.
"Oh my..." The lady said. She started crying a bit.
"Honey, you are my grandchild!" Mr. Charlie stood up, walked over to me and embraced me. I cried too.
"Where is Sophie then?" I asked as I stepped away from him. Mr. Charlie sighed.
"She moved away when i remarried. Said it was for the best. I think she is still in New York though, and i think she lives on Brady Avenue. I can drive you there." He patted my shoulder.
"That would be nice." I smiled at him.
"I'm Alice." The lady stepped forward and shook my hand. She was wiping away tears with her other hand. "Let me embed the couch for you." Apparently i was staying over the night.
We had dinner and stayed up talking all night. They were very nice people, and i enjoyed spending time with them. Alice borrowed me a nightgown, and brushed my hair before we went to bed. She said that she had dreamed about making her granddaughter look pretty.
The couch was comfortable, and i fell asleep quickly. It felt like i had just closed my eyes for a second when i woke up. My body was aching, maybe this couch wasn't so comfortable after all.
"Did you sleep well?" Alice walked in the room and sat down next to me.
"Yes, thank you." I answered politely. She smiled and we walked into the kitchen, ate breakfast then she helped me get ready. I hadn't seen Mr. Charlie at all.
"Where is Charlie?" I asked. Alice pulled the hairbrush trough my messy hair.
"He likes to take morning walks. He should be back any minute." The door opened and Mr. Charlie walked in.
"Are you ready to leave?" He asked me. I turned to Alice, and she nodded. Mr. Charlie walked me to the car and opened the door for me, just like Gerard had done on our first date. I missed him. I pulled out my cellphone; 25 missed calls, and 20 of them were from my dad. There were also like 50 messages, and i think at least half of them was from Gerard. I decided i had to call him.
"Mr. Charlie, may i make a quick phone call?" I held up my phone.
"Sure thing sweetie. I'll keep my eyes on the road." I smiled and dialed Gerard's number. You'll be surprised by how quick he answered.
"Charlie?" He sounded really happy.
"Heey man. How's it going?" I smiled.
"I'm okay, how about you?" I almost cried just hearing his voice.
"I'm fine. I.. i really miss you, Gerard." I had to bite my lip really hard not to cry.
"I miss you too babe. I wan't you to come home.." I heard him sobbing.
"Don't you dare cry." I laughed a bit, but it sounded fake.
"Just find her so i can hold you again, okay? I can't stand being without you. I need you." I didn't know what to say. A tear escaped and ran down my cheek.
"Alright i have to go, i love you."
"I love you too. Good luck." I hung up and buried my face in my hands. This was going to be a long drive.
