Down And Out

Chapter 11

"So, tell us about yourself Meagan." the teacher droned on and on about the newest student, Meagan. Boys were already looking at her but all she wanted was a girls attention. So she sat there looking at all the mindless drones sat before her, brushing her ginger hair aside.
As she looked around the boring old classroom she noticed the chipping walls and the old molding; the squeaky wooden doors. The old as god windows were open, letting in the chill of the never ending month, but short ass month that was March. The chill of winter was fading yet here in the middle of the east coast it was still more cold than warm.
She would admit she missed Texas, the warmth, the friends.
But, in turn, she was glad to be here as well, away from her godforsaken brother. Her sane gone mad father. The memories of her mother on stone dead cold on the floor, the sounds of a gun.
She remembered it clear as day.

It was a nice peaceful evening, her brother wasn't home to beat her ass and her mother and father were calmly sitting enjoying the absence of their son.
You see, everyone in the house was afraid of him, the nights he'd come home angry and high off his ass, or maybe even drunk. The worst was when he was sober, he wasn't sloppy with his work then. He would make sure everything was precise.
Her brother looked a lot like Meagan herself and she hated it. The blonde hair, the eyes, even the sarcasm and the angry bite to protect those they loved. Of course, there similarities ended abruptly when he started on the drugs. He became a brutal creature, wile in nature. Mean. Ruthless. And that's she dyed her hair, she didn't want to be compared to that monster.
So, they all sat at home calmly until her brother came home, if he even did.
Which of course he just had to come home on this goddamn night.
As he burst through the door he seemed sober, happy even. Until she saw his eyes, they had mischief in them. So, like any other night her mother greeted him, polite and proper.
"Hello Jeremy. How was your day?"
Instead of answering he approached her instead. Put his hand on her shoulder and firmly grasped it.
"It was fine." He answered a menacing smile on his face.
"Son, are you okay?" Her brother suddenly pulled a gun from the waistband of his pants. He pointed it at his father.
"Yes. Just fine."
And then it all happened so fast, being a ex police officer her father always carried a gun.
So he took it out and threatened Jeremy with it.
"Shoot me old man. I dare you."
In thinking there was nothing in the gun, a foolish move really, he shoot at his son.
The bullet was intended and only intended for Jeremy but his mother pushed her darling son out of the way and took the bullet intended for Jeremy.
And so, though the whole thing she sat there and watched feeling hopeless to the situation.
She could've done something, but she didn't the blame was on her.
All.
On.
Her.
And as the time passed her brother ran from the situation as the police came due to the neighbors hearing the gun shot and calling the police.
And there her father stood. A blank look in his eyes.
No thought.
No emotion.
Just a whole bunch of nothing.
It's as if he wasn't even there, she didn't hear her sobbing.
No one did.
No one ever did.
She hadn't mean to think of it but when she did she visibly winced.
Oh man, if it weren't for Gerard she would've killed herself already.
