Whatever It Takes
Drunken Confessions Will Haunt You
Dan was sitting on his couch all by himself with his head placed in his hand, his lifeless cell phone an arm’s length away from him.
He wasn’t happy at all. He had looked forward to filming today, but then William had called him and cancelled the shoot. He hadn’t even bothered telling Dan the reason why, so he could only imagine that this little bitch had talked William into it.
William was way too soft, he had told him before, proposed, he would take their captive in his own home. Dan would have shown this litte fucker who the boss was. But William watched the world through rose-coloured glasses when it came to his pet.
Gerard here Gerard there, don’t hurt him, blablabla, he couldn’t hear that rubbish anymore. He wasn’t even sorry that he knocked Gerard unconscious yesterday, after all he had attacked him first and needed to be taught some manners. Who cared if he was bleeding a litte, he wasn’t a human right’s organisation and he couldn’t care less about that pretty boy’s fate.
William and him had been so close once, but that days were gone obviously. He missed the evenings out together, their kisses and generally the tall and attractive man’s presence, his touch. Now he was cast away, not even worthy to know why he couldn’t come over and spend some time at William’s flat.
Dan wondered what he would find when he would enter the apartment. The spare key was dangling on his key chain after all, but probably it would be William with his cock shoved up that bitch’s little asshole, what else. But if they were already fucking why couldn’t he film and earn money at once?
William doesn’t want to share that, because he’s probably making love to him‘, Dan’s jaw clenched at this thought and bitterness rose in his chest. Yeah of course, the two of them had been a thing once and now they’re continuing what they started, while Gerard, Dan felt himself pulling a disgusted face at the thought of the other man, was making lovey-dovey eyes to fool William.
Wouldn’t surprise him if the next phone call from William would be a desperate cry for help, because Gerard had tricked him and escaped.
As much as he wished Gerard would do just that, to teach William a lesson, there was too much to lose for both of them. That little bitch would run to the police and bawl his eyes out how much those bad men had mistreated him and then he’d have to be in constant sorrow of getting caught.
Maybe William needed a warning nevertheless to remind him of the dangers that kidnapping brought with it. A call wouldn’t be enough though, probably William wouldn’t even pick up the phone, seeing Dan’s name on the screen.
Dan rose from the sofa and decided to go out. This silence and bad thoughts made him nervous and angry, he needed some air, and maybe a beer.
It was another grey and depressing day and Dan’s appearance was swallowed easily in the dull city streets, with his black hoodie drawn deeply into his face he was nothing more but a ghost, strolling alongside all those „good“ people.
Most of the time he kept his eyes on the ground, so because of that the many sheets of paper fixed all over the street lanterns and shop windows didn’t catch his attention until he stood in front of the pub he was about to enter.
The picture of a dark haired guy with a friendly heart-shaped face, broad smile and innocent eyes was placed in the middle under a big headline -MISSING-.
Nervously Dan ripped the paper off the lantern and studied it. Even though he hadn’t seen him smiling once, he knew that only one person he knew owned this set of awkward baby teeth or that small pixie nose many people would probably adore. The next line read his name, Gerard Way.
Yepp, it was him. Dan’s eyes flew over the next sentences, but he was only catching this or that. Age 25, lost on Sunday, Rangoon Bar, Jersey boy, and some love crap from his boyfriend at the end. His eyes rested on the last sentence, „Gerard Way may be in company of a tall, blonde man, about the same age. If seen please contact: ….“ Dan smirked, William was really in for it now, he needed to see this, after all Dan knew he couldn’t have left the flat yet.
This was a good reason to pay him a visit later.
With the sheet still in hand he opened the door and sat down on the last bar stool in the row.
A young woman who due to the lack of customers had been sitting on a chair behind the bar, scrolling boredly through her phone looked up. She put her best smile on, fetched a menu and walked over to the lonely customer in the corner of the bar.
„Hi how are you, dear? Are you here for breakfast? I can recom-“ „No thanks, just a beer please and a bowl of nuts if you have.“ Dan spoke quickly and put his hood down.
The waitress nodded shortly and fetched the beer and a bowl of mixed nuts. As she put the beer on a coaster next to the missing poster Dan had laid on the bar she sighed pityingly. „This poor guy, I’ve been seeing these flyers since Tuesday I guess? He’s really a cutie, I hope his boyfriend finds him.“ Dan snorted disdainful, „Sure if you’re into someone like that…“
The waitress blinked and squinted one eye tightly, „Well, if I may say so, you look a bit alike, similar hairstyle, smiliar shape of the eyes, but this guy’s features are a bit softer I guess, a bit sweeter.“
„Oh yeah, well that’s your opinion.“ Dan grumbled and took a long sip from his beer.
„I didn’t mean it in a negative way, sorry if I’ve upset you.“ the waitress answered and smiled apologetically.
„No worries…“ Dan mumbled and took a handful nuts from the little bowl she’d served him.
„You think they’ll find him soon?“ Dan asked innocently. He wasn’t that eager to keep the conversation going, but he was interested in a stranger’s point of view.
„Definitely, our crime rates may be high, but the police is working really efficient. One small mistake from his captors and they’ll find him. Well, if he was really kidnapped, but for kidnapping you’ll get around 20 years I heard. A friend of mine is working at the police office, and she told me that most criminals turn themselves in and make a confession. You know why?“ The waitress smirked and raised an eyebrow.
„Why?“ Dan asked obliviously.
„Becauuuuse….the New Jersey State Prison is one of the most violent and dangerous ones, it even has a maximum security tract where they keep the real bad boys. Heard some pretty bloody stuff about their yard exercise, after all they let all their inmates onto the yard at the same time. If you ever wonder what being in hell feels like, get in there.“ she chuckled and turned away to empty the dishwasher who had drawn her attention to it with a loud ‚pling‘.
Dan lowered his head and gripped his bottle tighter. Twenty years, that’s a long long time. Lots of criminals turned themselves in she said, but that would be a couple of years nevertheless. Maybe in some lucky cases you’d be on probation.
But they wouldn’t get caught, they’ve prepared everything well enough. They kept Gerard in a house with almost no neighbours at all, in an area with a high criminality rate so nobody mined screams or loud noises anymore, and he wouldn’t leave the flat, ever. The only weak link in the chain was William, who was probably too influenceable by his little slut.
Dan ordered another beer, and another. The pressure of the upcoming talk with William and generally making a mistake caused him an upset stomach and he just wanted to forget about his secrets and hurt pride.
„The bill pl-ease“ Dan slurred after his fourth beer and the waitress, who was busier now, as the afternoon hours had swept more costumers inside, raised her hand to show she’d heard him.
Few minutes later Dan had paid for his drinks and the waitress wished him a good afternoon, as he suddenly turned around again. „He’s… he’s fine, no worries, he’s ..well and alive, I take c-care of him, only gets what he deserves, you know“ Dan grinned, blinked to clear his sight and stumbled out of the bar.
The waitress stared a couple of seconds after him and then immediately grabbed her cell phone and the flyer Dan had left at the bar.
„Hello?“ Frank’s nervous voice came through the speaker. He’d seen an unknown number appearing on his screen and guessed it had something to do with all the missing posters he and Mikey had fixed in the city. Maybe this could be a clue or even more. He took a seat at the kitchen table in case of bad news…
„Yeah, that’s me, Frank Iero.“ Mikey stuck his head into the kitchen as he heard Frank’s sorrowful undertone. He could hear a jittery, female voice at the other end of the line. Mikey stepped closer and lowered his head until he was on the same height with Frank’s cell phone.
„I’m a waitress at the Green Apple, a customer came here in the late morning, and left just a few seconds ago, and I think he knew something about your missing boyfriend!“ Frank’s eyes grew wide at the news.
„How- w-what did he say? What did he look like?“ Frank asked nervously gesturing Mikey for something to write. Mikey ran and came back with one of the empty pizza boxes and a sharpie.
„He looked almost like your friend, just his nose was longer and a bit crooked, his face was kind of slim and a had defined jawline. He was wearing a black hoodie and the rest I couldn’t see.“
„Okey great, and why do you think he knew something? Did he mention anything about Gerard?“ Frank had snatched the sharpie and the pizza box out of Mikey’s hand and scribbled in big letters ‚green apple, dark hair, dark hoodie, crooked nose‘ on the cardboard.
Mikey was straining his ears to catch all of the conversation as he lowered his head again.
„He wanted to know a lot of stuff, about jail and if I think the police is gonna find your boy soon. Then he said nothing for the rest of the time and when he left he was a bit drunk and told me something like, he’s taking care of him and that your friend gets what he deserves.“
„Oh…okey.“ Frank felt his heart sink.
„Maybe if you’re quick he might be still around, seemed a bit gloomy and desperate, and he didn’t put his car keys on the counter like most men do when they’re at the bar, so I guess he didn’t come by car but by foot.“ Frank felt Mikey’s finger dig into his shoulder and they exchanged psyched up glances.
„Thank you so much! I’ll be on my way!“ Frank spoke quickly and hung up. Both men ran to the door, the pizza box was clamped under Frank’s arm.
This time Frank was driving, for he knew the Green Apple’s destination. The sun was already setting, because the days grew shorter now and Mikey was pretty worried a couple of times about running someone over at Frank’s furious driving.
Luckily they reached the Green Apple without having an accident and jumped out of the car.
„Should we split up?“ Frank asked, not really sure what to do now. „No, that’s bullshit, let’s just go together.“ Mikey answered and ran ahead.
After a while they had to stop to catch their breath again and sat down at a bus stop. Wheezing and coughing they leaned back on the hard plastic seats, which were full of stickers and graffiti.
„Is..*gasp* is this guy they guy from the surveillance video? You know, the one with William“ Mikey gasped and held his ribs.
„Absolutely, everything from the description fits. Guess he’s gotten cold feet and the alcohol had loosened his tongue… Bet he’s feeling guilty as fuck and was glad that he could tell somebody about his crime.“ Frank panted and leaned back.
„Holy fuck Mikey how can you smoke now?! I can’t even breath properly.“ Frank coughed loudly and glanced over to Mikey who had stuck a cigarette between his lips, trying to lit it with shaking hands.
„Gotta calm down, man. I’m really stressed out.“ Mikey spoke through the side of his mouth as he finally lit up and took a drag.
„Stop imitating Gerard and bum me one!“ Frank ordered and held his hand out.
„Learned from the master“ Mikey winked as far as Frank could see it in the darkness and reached him his pack of smokes and lighter.
They sat for a while and watched the smoke dissolve in the cold air, in and exhaling almost simultaneously. They were totally alone at the bus stop, no people in sight, now and then a single car drove by.
„Hey, can anybody of you guys give me a light?“ A flat voice asked and a guy stepped up in front of them. He was wearing a black hoodie and Frank’s heart started beating faster.
„Sure“ Frank answered and forced himself to remain calm as he passed the lighter.
„Thanks“ The guy took it and as he guided the flame to the cigarette’s end, Frank could catch a glimpse of the man’s face that had been hidden in the darkness under his hood.
„It’s him!“ Frank yelled and jumped from his seat, grabbing the dark figure at the shoulders. „Mikey it’s him!“ Frank repeated loudly and crowded the struggling man in the corner of the small bus station grabbing his arms tightly.
All three of them had dropped their cigarettes, due to shock or even unknowingly.
„What the fuck! Heeeelp!!“ Dan screamed but Mikey quickly pressed the palm of his hand over the other’s mouth.
„You’re William’s accomplice, right. Where’s Gerard?!“ Frank yelled at the shocked man and kept shaking him, while his grip became harder around his captive’s arms.
Mikey lifted his palm but Dan just screamed again.
„You better tell us or we’ll beat you to death!“ Frank’s eyes were burning with hate.
„Frank“ Mikey hissed and looked at the shorter male. „Don’t freak out, either he’s telling us or we’re taking him to the police.“
„Where’s Gerard you fucking piece of shit what have you done to him?!“ Frank could hear a muffled laughter from his opposite and lost it. He kneed him harshly into the stomach, so he had to hold the man up as he doubled over, wincing in pain.
Blood was dripping from Dan’s lips as he raised his head again.
Pure wrath spoke from Dan’s eyes and as the corners of his mouth turned upwards into a horrible grin, Frank knew he would never forget this evening.
„Your litte princess is with us now. But we won’t be so greedy and keep him just to ourselves, oh no. You can see him if you want.“ Dan’s eyes seemed mad and he darted them between Frank and Mikey, still grinning.
„Where is he, I swear to god! I ask you one last time!“ Frank’s spittle flew into Dan’s face as he shook him again, gripping as hard as he could.
„You can see him, just go on twinkdaddy.com, you’ll love it, I promise.“ Dan groaned at the pain in his arms as Frank's claws gripped him vicelike.
„What’s your name?!“ Frank growled and looked Dan deep into the eyes. The other man just stared back.
„Mikey take his wallet!“ Frank ordered, but as Mikey tried to grab the other’s wallet, bright lights flooded the scene and they heard the bus coming. For a second they didn’t pay attention, then Frank felt a terrible pain in his thigh and sunk to his knees. A small blade was sticking out of it and Dan was gone in the confusion of people who were getting off the bus.
Notes
I thought long and hard about it, and I don't want to write something I assume people want to read, but something I want to write. So if this story is too frustrating for you guys, because Frank and Gerard aren't huddled together on the sofa all sweet and happy, talking about music and old horror movies you should read something else. There's enough fluff out there.
I mean, just think about MCR's songs, they're full of bloody, dark and disturbing lyrics and that's what I like about it, that you can just enjoy your fantasies.
I guess chapter 30 will be the last one. Pce.
