Red

“Go away!” Her soft voice came from the other side of the door as I stood there with my head pressed against it.
“I’m not leaving you alone. Let me in.” I mumbled against the door, knowing she could hear me.
“I’m not alone, I have a man in here with me.” She shouted, her voice sounded more broken than before.
“If he has a red and gold suit he doesn’t count!” I shouted back at her, already hearing Iron Man 2 playing out. There was silence between us both when I decided just to go for it, I tried the door handle and to my surprise it opened. I could see all the different sized hills that her body was making, the raises in the quilt where her knees once rested up showed she’d been restless. I quietly made my way over to her bed, I couldn’t see her face as she had the cover tucked around her head tightly, just enough of a gap so she could see the television. I toed my shoes off and slipped in the bed at the side of her slowly on top of the quilt, my arm instantly going over her waist as I felt her shaking silently crying.
“Wanna tall Red?” I asked using her nickname as I felt her shake her head against my chest. We stayed in silence for at least half of the film, she then rolled over so she was facing me; her head tucked under my chin and her forehead on my chest.
“What has she got that I haven’t?” She asked quietly adding a hum at the end of the question. “I mean sure she’s beautiful, but my god I thought this time it would be different.” She mumbled, a sob escaping her lips, breaking my heart. What had caused her this pain? Her cousin. The whole reason anything happened between Ruby and I was because we were both still hurting from being fucked over, and her cousin was part of that fucking. Her family had come over with Dylan for a visit so her and Alex went along to the meal and it turns out Mr Naughty lived up to his name with her cousin.
“It’s not about what she’s got. It’s what she hasn’t got and that’s clearly respect.” I whispered holding on to her tighter as she sobbed more.
“I feel so stupid, I mean we weren’t even together that long and it’s not like we’d told each other we loved each other, but, it’s happened again. What if it’s always going to be like that?” She looked up at me and she looked a mess. She clearly hadn’t slept, her eyes were puffy from crying and I pretty sure I could still see faint mascara trails down her cheeks.
“It isn’t. Red you just haven’t found the right guy who isn’t a complete and utter dick.” I whispered stroking her hair softly as she mumbled something inaudible.

We’d been lay there for about a good hour the film restarting itself as we stayed silent, the occasionally sob escaping her lips every so often. I shifted up to get comfortable when I noticed a fancy dress hanging up on the door of her wardrobe. “What’s the dress for?” I asked cautiously.
“Oh a family wedding. That’s why they have all come over.” She mumbled as she carried on drawing patterns over my t shirt covered chest. “I’m not going.” She took the words right out of my mouth.
“Why not?” I moved her off me slightly so I could tilt her chin up to look at me.
“Because she will be there to rub my face in it.” She whispered. “The family think the sun shines out of her arse because she’s the youngest. I don’t want to deal with it.” She carried on sounding more British than ever.
“So show up with someone else. Is this the wedding Gerard and Maddie are going to? Will Ryan and Dylan not be there?” I asked all the questions coming to my mind.
“Who? I can’t think of a single person I would want to put through that torture. Yes, it is. And yeah they will but they’ll be with their girlfriends, I would literally be the third wheel to everybody.” She shouted out a little louder this time.
“Take me.” I looked at her with all seriousness as she just frowned.
“No.” Her simple answer came out, but it stung like a bitch. “And before you think it it isn’t because I don’t think your good enough, it’s because you are too good. If I turn up with you she will just try to sink her claws into you.” She shrugged softly before tearing her gaze away and back to my chest.
“I won’t let her.” I stated.
“You’ve not seen her. She is the girl of every guys dreams, as she says no one can resist her.” She spoke monotonously.
“Why are you doing this? Why are you putting yourself down? Fuck Red you are the most beautiful person I have ever seen and your putting yourself down because a guy couldn’t keep it in his pants? That is his problem not yours! He’d won the fucking lottery just having a shot with you.” I snapped as she just glanced up at me, wide eyed.
“Some people just want the rollover though.” She mumbled.
“Why are you scared if she tries to get her claws into me?” I asked her seriously.
“I don’t want to talk about this no more. I’m tired.” She whispered rolling away from me slightly to settle into a sleeping position. I rolled my eyes as I slipped under the cover, throwing it over us and it accidently covering her face. We settled down with her back still to me as I thought about how I shouldn’t have snapped at her when she finally spoke. “You’re too special for me to lose Frank. I don’t want to see you get hurt by her, because it will hurt me.” She whispered rolling over to face me as I studied her face which had a red glow from the quilt cover reflection.
“And I want to see you happy Red, but, you need to realise that not every guy will fall for her,” I started; putting my finger over her lips softly when she went to tell me how beautiful she was. “She could be the most beautiful woman on the planet, but, she still wouldn’t compare.” I whispered as she looked up at me smiling sadly.
“Just remember this tomorrow when you meet her at the wedding then.” She whispered her eyes closed as I leant down to kiss her head.
