The Kids From Yesterday

Chapter Two - When All The Lights Go Out Across These City Streets

I heard footsteps speeding rapidly down the long corridor.
"Hey, Gee!" Exclaimed Mikey, my little brother, as he ran into me and hugged me.as tightly as possible. He looked up at me, smiling, his glasses slightly lopsided. He was in his last year of highschool, and was a little over average height for his age, and eventhough it was his last year in school this year, he acted like and was as adorable as an eighth-grader.
"Hey Mikes," I say affectionately, messing his hair playfully.
"Moms making roast turkey for dinner."
"Oh, I cant wait." I said, sniffing the air. It sure did smell good. Mikey led me down the hall to the kitchen, the room furthest down the hall. It was a very large kitchen, but there was nothing fancy or unique about it. A table in the middle. An oven, fridge, dishwasher, etcetera. All these were lined against the back wall and the one to the left of this.
"Hey, Mom." . I greeted her, hugging her as she turns her attention away from the food.
"Oh, hey Gee. How was work?"
"Fine, I guess. We had at least fifteen customers today."
"Oh, thats because people enjoy having a friendly member of staff for once. You're really bringing up the money for that guy."
"Most of them were just girls trying to get my number." I said glumly. Why was I all of a sudden so popular? I was the opposite in school. Well, I was fat in highschool. Probably because I lost all that weight that girls are starting to notice me. Huh.
"Even better!" Mom said happily, stirring the carrots. "Did they buy anything?"
"Most of them did. I was, somehow, very persuasive. I didn't try to be." I sat down at the table, leaning back against the chair.
"I think it's good that all these girls are taking an interest in you." Mikey said enviously. "I'd love to be in your.position."
I laughed. "Well, it's Saturday tomorrow. Maybe you could come work with me. I'll introduce you to them."
"Really?" Mikey said , his eyes lighting up.
"You'll have to stay with Gerard." Mom said sternly. "I don't mind you going around by yourself, but I don't want strange girls taking you where Gerard can't see you."
"Mom, I'm sixteen." Mikey half groaned, half laughed.

Dinner was delicious. As usual. Moms a great cook. Dad took his to go, but instead of an actual roast turkey meal in a tub, he had turkey sandwiches. We hardly ever saw him. He was always working. Full-time job as a hotel assistant. I paid my Mom some of the money I earnt at my job, as Dads job was only average pay, and the other three quaters of it went toward things I needed, like clothes and toiletries. That was the deal I'd made with her. I pay her a quarter of my salary each month so that she could cook for me until I moved out. That was all she would do. I still had to buy toiletries, clothes, bedding, things to decorate my room with. It seemed like a pretty good deal to me. I pay her to cook for me. Okay.
Since Mikey was still in highschool and was still looking for a job, he didn't have to pay Mom. The deal only had to be made after highschool. Yeah, that was fair.
Me and Mikey shared a room. It was rectangular, and me and Mikey had a single bed each in it pressed against the wall . I had decorated mine with posters and Star Wars figures with the money my job earnt. It was pretty rad. Mikey had used posters from Kerrang!, Rock Sound, and whatever music mags he could find. He didn't have enough money to buy actual posters. We usually stay up and talk about new music we've just discovered, but tonight Mikey was really tired, as he had an exam today, so I watched Netflix on my phone for a little while.
As I was falling asleep, I contemplated how mediocre.work was going to be tomorrow.
How wrong I was.
