You, Me, And The Apocalypse
Prologue
Gerard's P.O.V
I was stuck there and I couldn't do anything about it. I tried to run but it was like my feet were glued to the floor. I couldn't pick up my gun quick enough. I let out a yell as the dead piece of walking flesh burst through the door. I yelled out "MOM, DAD, BEHIND YOU! A ZOMBIE!" I knew we were trapped, we should have just left this place as soon as the apocalypse started, then we wouldn't be in this position "GERARD, RUN, TAKE MIKEY WITH YOU, THIS IS WHAT WE HAD PLANNED FOR, STICK TO THE PLAN, REMEMBER WHAT YOUR FATHER TAUGHT YOU, WE BOTH LOVE YOU" I hated that we had to do this. I-I-I couldn't leave them, we always have made a plan if it ever came to this, I just never thought it would. Mikey was in hysterics behind me, a single tear rolled down my cheek as I heard a painful, mangled scream from my Dad as the zombie ate his brain, I heard him reach for his pistol shooting himself then throwing it on the floor as his body fell to the ground. I saw my Mom mouth 'I'm sorry' to me and then 'to run' but I couldn't, all I could do was stand there and watch in horror. "MOM NO!!" I yelled as the zombie started attacking her, I lunged forwards to try and get it off her but Mikey held me back "Gerard, we have to leave or we'll die too" I knew he was right but it felt so wrong. My Mom pleaded with her eyes for me to just leave her, I wasn't sure what to do, she was half alive, half dead by now. I knew she wanted me to just shoot her but I couldn't, she didn't want to be a zombie, never did. I closed my eyes and shot in her direction three times, the zombie went down with a cry. I ran over to Mom screaming hoping it wasn't too late. "MOM WAKE UP, STAY WITH ME, I LOVE YOU, DON'T LEAVE US" I still had a tiny bit of hope in my eyes glimmering, Mikey quietly knelt down next to me whispering a few words about how he loves her. I couldn't save Dad but I could at least try to save her. "Gerard" I heard her croak out with barley a voice left, "You've got to go, go to Battery City, remember what we told you, now please, honey, shoot me, I don't want to turn into a zombie, your Father has already taken his life, I don't want to go....that way" I let out a sob, I couldn't shoot her, I couldn't. "Mom..." I started but was interrupted "No Gerard, you listen to me, I can either turn into that lifeless, heartless thing that is taking me away from you and be killed by someone else or I can beat them to it, what would you rather happen? Now you either shoot me or give me that gun" She pointed over to my Dad's pistol he'd left on the floor. I nodded understanding she wouldn't change her mind. Mikey went over and passed the gun to me. "Mikey, I don't want you to see this, I umm just go upstairs and pack a bag" He solemnly walked out the room, Mom and him swapping their goodbyes and I love you's. I was never one for goodbyes, Mom new this and just held my hand and kissed my forehead, "Do what's right Gerard, I believe in you, I love you" I went to stand up but my Mom yelped in pain, "Quickly, I can feel something happening" I sat back and decided to just stay as she held onto my hand tighter. "Don't be afraid, I love you and I'm so sorry I have to do this Mom" She nodded and relaxed as I pointed the gun to her heart as she took in one last sharp breathe squeezing my hand.....I pulled the trigger, my heart switched off as I felt her hand let go of me. I laid her back down by Dad and kissed my fingers, brushing them delicately over her eyelids. Gone....she was gone, the realization kicked in that I just shot my own mother.
I woke up in a cold sweat, panic written all over my body, I jumped as I felt a hand touch my shoulder.
"Hey, shhhh, it's me" I nodded as Mikey asked me to shuffle over as he hugged my body tightly, this always calmed me down. I've had the same reoccurring dream since the incident 4 months ago, reliving the worst moment of my life before Mikey and I moved across New Jersey to a motel not far from the city where you never saw anyone. At the moment we were in the middle of moving to Battery City. That was always the go to plan if Mom and Dad died. Battery City was set up by Old California when the apocalypse first started about 6 months ago, if you can get there you're safe, the most protection you can get, food, medicine and the most important cure that will one day end the apocalypse. Mikey and I hardly ever see civilization. On your way you would rarely see the odd traveller going their own way but other than that everywhere is dead. Dead towns, dead people, everything is just dead.
"Was it the dream again?" I gave Mikey the knowing look we share, it was worth an ask though.
"Gerard you did the right thing, it's what she wanted" I relaxed into his body.
"I know, it's just scarring that I'm the one who took her life away" He put his head next to mine just staring up at the ceiling above us.
"But you potentially saved her from turning into a monster with no self control or love" I just nodded seeing the sunlight spill into the room as morning started, another night survived. We barley get into danger anymore but at night it's the worst, that's why we never stay anywhere without protection of locks on doors. Just thinking that a year ago for fun I would go to Hot Topic with Mikey but now for fun we go out shooting zombies, what a drastic change.
We only know how to shoot because of Dad, we had always been predicting the apocalypse, he trained us to use a gun, but most people in New Jersey do use them.
We must have been in bed another hour or so before I decided to get up. I stood up popping the muscles in my back and stretching.
Well here starts another day in the apocalypse.
