The Color of her Skin.

Too Pretty

'Which way do I go? I don't even know where we're going. It's been forever.'

'Just keep your eyes on the road.'

'Could you be a little more precise? I'm actually keeping my eyes on the road, right now.'

'No, you're not. You keep looking around.'

'And what does that have to do with my question?'

'See, you keep doing it, your eyes, they're not focusing on the road.'

'Pff- whatever, but if I'm missing the stop, it's gonna be your fault.'

'Actually you can't, cause you're driving right towards it, right now.'

'What? Where? Oh my g-'

'See, I told you.'

'Shit. Shit. What do I do?'

Party rolled his eyes, feeling the thin line of his patience crumbling. 'THE BREAKS BONNIE! YOU PUSH THE FUCKING BREAKS!'

'The breaks? Where? OH, SH-'

There was a loud squeaking sound when the tires of the Trans Am abruptly slowed down,
drifting in the dust as the car took a violent turn, making Bonnie and Party bump out of their seats. Both of them exhaled in relief when the movement of the vehicle finally stopped just a few feet away from a cactus tree.

'I am...definitely, not letting you drive tonight...' Party grunted as he pushed his body who had smashed against the glove compartment.

'...Sorry.' She muttered, rubbing her forehead.

'Where did you learn to drive like that?'

She looked on the ground. 'Nowhere, this was my first time...'

His eyes turned cold, flaring at her. 'Dammit Bonnie, you should of told me.'

'Well dammit Party, it's not like I had a choice. We were about to get killed by those Dracs.' She grunted, crossing her arms.

'I know, I know. Just... never mind.' Party sighed and got out of the car.

The clash of the door closing hard against the Trans made an unpleasant sound and the Killjoy was already walking towards the edifice they had almost just crashed in. Bonnie rushed herself to get out of the vehicle.

'Hey, you could at least wait for me!' She yelled behind him.

'How old are you? Six? I'm not your dad. Just hurry up, he's waiting.' Party nagged, his bossy side suddenly taking over as he kept a steady pace in front of her. He approached the large and heavy metallic gate of the building. Bonnie jogged to reach his side, feeling slightly annoyed by the Killjoy's arrogant attitude.

Party started knocking on the front door, his hands making a series of percussions against it. It looked strange and she couldn't help but stare at his particular behaviour. The resonance he made almost sounded like a song, a very psychedelic and unusual one, but a song. She hesitated before saying anything, trying to understand what was going on.

'Party what are you d-'

'Shhh-' He sushed her quickly. He looked very focus, his jazzy hands did not quit the beat and his pinky wet tongue was pressed against his upper lip.

A camera that was hanging on the side of the structure suddenly made a zooming sound and a red light appeared at the top of the door. Causing the lever in the middle of it to spin on itself as the heavy steeled frame slowly opened, letting a creaking sound invade their ears.

He looked at her just before entering. 'That's the secret code.' His sweat soaked hair stuck on the side of his face and a wicked smirk appeared on his lips.

'Ow, I see.' With an impressed but baffled expression she nodded slowly, still trying to figure out what just happened. Who ever came up with this certainly wasn't in there right mind. 'That was... quite a show.'

'Yeah. Now come on, we're already late.' He said as he urged himself to enter a long red lighted hallway ahead of them, not wanting to waist any more minutes. Bonnie followed as she cautiously observed the walls around her. The floor made a clicking and echoing sound every time her boots clashed against the iron surface. They both walked in silence until reaching another door, this one was black and small.

Party grabbed the doorknob and just as he was about to force it open, he turned around and stared at her straight in the eyes. 'Oh and, one last thing, you let me do the talking. So better keep that pretty little mouth of yours shut.'

'Why do I h-' Bonnie was about to sass back but he quickly shut her up by pressing 3 of his fingers on her lips. Okay, he was definitely getting on her nerves now. She frowned and groaned against the pressure of his fingers who kept any sound escaping from her mouth.

'Not right now Bonnie, not right now.' He whispered to her as he opened the wooden black door in front of them.

She was astound by what she saw. A long oval vault was forming the shape of the roof and the whole ceiling was made out of stained glass, letting the sky reflect throughout the different colourful shapes; bright shades of red, orange and blue were spreading across the whole the room.

'Wow...' She murmured as they walked further inside the new place.'This is so... beautiful.' Looking at the sky above her, she admired the beauty of it through the glass. Her black eyes widening as uncontrollable feelings of awe took over of her.

Party was about to advise her to keep it down, but when he turned around, the sight of the girl in front of him caused the annoyed expression of his face to fade away. He couldn't help but notice how amazed she was. Her delicate features, grasping every little details around her. He hadn't seen such a genuine expression from anyone in a very long time. Everyone he usually hanged with were bored and unimpressed by everything, a side effect of spending too much time in the desert. The lack of entertainment was sometimes hard to cope with. If not for the sex and booze, but even this was starting to lose it's essence.

He caught himself smiling tenderly and turned around just as she was about to notice it.

'Sorry, I, got lost for a second...'

'Yeah, well, hurry up now.' Was the only thing he told her before walking silently towards a pair of large curtains in the back.

Party Poison cleared his throat. 'We're here, Dr.Death.'
.

'Identify yourself, Killjoy.' A low sounding voice came from behind the curtains.

'Party Poison, Zone 6, #66. I am here with a visitor.'

There was the sound of a chair being pushed against the floor, followed by slow and steady footsteps just before the red curtains slid on each side of the pole. Opening up on a second room, a tall man stood in front of them. He had long hair and a beard, sunglasses covered his eyes and a bandana was wrapped around his head. The place behind him looked much darker and messy. There was writing on the walls with posters and papers covering them. Long rows of shelves were symmetrically aligned, reaching far in the back and a large black desk was standing at the front with a vast assortment of weird electronic devices placed on top of it.

'Party Poison, I've been waiting for you.'

'Yeah, we had a...small incident on the road.' The flame haired boy put his hand in his pocket and kicked invisible dust from the ground.

Bonnie was standing just beside him, frowning at his words. She wondered if he was hiding the truth or simply out of his mind for thinking that what happened an hour ago was just a small incident.

'Well, you're here now, that's what matters.' The Doctor laughed as he leaned forward Party, both shook each other's hands throughout what seemed like a delicate hug. 'And may I ask who is the young lady standing by your side?'

Bonnie could not see the eyes of the older man behind his tainted frames, but she knew he was observing her. His sudden curiosity visible from the way one of his dark and bushy eyebrows was uplifting on one side of his face.

'This is Bonnie. She's the girl who escaped from the city, my fellow partner Fun Ghoul brought her home and she's living with us now.' Party explained calmly.

'It's a pleasure to meet you, Bonnie.' The man bowed down the upper part of his body and gently grabbed her hand, placing a delicate kiss on her pale skin.

'Ow.' She blushed instantly and gave a timid smile when the Doctor lifted his head to face her, taking the pair of sunglasses off his eyes. 'Pleasure to meet you too Mr...hm-'

'Call me Doctor, Dr. D, or Dr. Death, whatever pleases you.' He gave her a seducing grin and made his way to sit on the top of his desk. 'I've heard a lot of things about you, Bonnie. You've caused them a lot of damage back there... Did you know they want to give a reward of 50 000$ to anyone who finds you? I guess you're lucky I don't need any money.' He told just as a loud and sarcastic laugh came out of his mouth.

Always unable to hide the emotions on her face whenever something was troubling her, Party could obviously see she felt intimidated by the Doctor. He gave her a reassuring look as he subtly bumped the side of his elbow on her arm.

'We're here to pick up the weapons and the equipment we heard had arrived yesterday.'

'Oh... yes, the equipment. We received dynamites and other kinds of explosives, Killjoys from the second zone also managed to grabbed boxes of Power Pup and a bunch of goodies you might enjoy. You can look through the boxes of the second shelf in the back. I've identify your numbers on the ones belonging to you.'

'Thank you Dr. D.' Party nodded and disappeared as he went to pick up the items. Bonnie on the other hand, stood still in front of the desk. Avoiding the Doctor's gaze, she distractedly played with the zipper of her jumpsuit.

'Tell me, Bonnie, do you want to become a Killjoy?' Dr. Death shot at her as he scribbled something on a paper.

'A Killjoy? Me?'

'Yes, you.' The Doctor's eyes lifted up.

'Hum, I-I don't know. I've...never thought about it before.'

'Well, now is the time. Let me ask you again. Do you want to become a Killjoy? There is only two answers.'

Thoughts in her mind started racing. Did she really want to become a Killjoy? A restless warrior, fighting against the Dracs and the gigantic empire of BLI? She did escape from the city, to get away, but the thought of officially enrolling in the resistance made her hesitate. She knew she wasn't a hero and she hated the way people always thought she was some kind of magical saviour. She was only a girl trying to survive, trying to escape the demons of her past. The guilt of her previous actions still to this day haunted her in her sleep.

Can you be a hero when you've got blood on your hands? Or when the touch of your own enemy was, not so long ago, brushing the surface of your skin...

She was scared to become the person she wanted to be.

But then again... You need to be scared in order to be brave.

'Yes...I want to, but...' She bit the inside of her lower lip, her eyes wandering in different directions. 'I-I don't think I have what it takes...'

The doctor lifted his head, pushing his pen aside he inhaled deeply before speaking. 'All the power you need is already inside of you, Bonnie. Only you have to see it, and believe it.'

She looked at the older man, feeling unsure. She was trying to smile but, something was holding her back. A sharp sensation, crawling, spreading, in every parts of her body. She grabbed the back of her neck and glanced at the ground.

The Doctor noticed the confusion in her eyes. 'You know, a wise sage once said... that a brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.'

'I guess I'm just... scared of myself.' She scornfully laughed out the last words. 'It doesn't make any sense, does it?'

'We've all got demons inside, Bonnie, all of us. It doesn't mean there's no good worth fighting for. But if you keep running away, you'll be running your whole life. I know a good person when I see one, and whatever happened to you back there, I am giving you the chance to set yourself free.'

She thought deeply about what the Doctor said, trying to reason with the voices in her head.

'Any ideas for your new name?' He asked her as he was searching for something on the chaotic mess of his desk.

'A new name?' She wondered

'Yes, your identification, your, Killjoy identity...'

'Huh... I guess I'll just, stick with Bonnie... already sounds kind of weird anyway.'

'Hah, very well then.' The doctor sauntered towards her, holding a small case in his hands. 'This is for you, Killjoy. I am counting on you now.' He pressed the square shaped thing in the palm of her hands.

She gave the Doctor a last glance before carefully examining the mysterious case. Immediately compelled by it, she slowly walked back to the other of the room. Standing below the reflects of the coloured ceiling, she pressed her body on the side of the wall. Curiosity was burning inside of her as she carefully opened the box. She gasped. It was a laser gun. The weapon looked just like Party's, but hers was purple with whitened stripes and the logo of a dead flower was placed at the bottom of the grip. It was pretty, almost too pretty for something to kill with.

Party returned from the back with 2 large wooden cases, he stopped halfway as he past by the Doctor. Dropping the heavy masses on the floor, he needed time to recover from the loaded strain he carried.

'You've got yourself a rare kind of diamond there, Mr. Poison.' Dr. Death murmured while preparing his radio station, carefully adjusting the signals of a large antenna.

'I'm sorry what?' He replied breathlessly, not understanding what he meant.

'That girl, Bonnie. I've never seen anybody like her before. She'll become an incredible Killjoy, just like you.'

Party glanced back, still trying to catch his breath, his hands standing on his hips.

Bonnie was ahead of them and couldn't hear their conversation. She was sitting on the floor, studying her new toy. Party watched her from afar and couldn't help but notice how beautiful she looked beneath the colours of the ceiling. The way her hair was pushed in the back, revealing the side of her neck. The way her black eyes reflected emotions that no amount of words could ever quantify, the way her lips perfectly contrasted with the color of her skin or the look she had on her face, whenever she thought nobody was watching. Party had noticed all these things, but was trying to keep them buried. He knew a part of him was deeply compelled by her, though something was always pulling him back. The Doctor was right, he'd never seen anybody like her before. She had created a storm in his head and he didn't know how to make it stop.

'Don't let her out of your sight. I'm sure you'll achieve great things together. Anyway, so long, and goodnight. I need to get this broadcast going.' Dr. Death told Party Poison just before putting a pair of headphones on his head as he talked into his microphone.

'Look alive, Sunshine, 109 in the sky but the pigs won't quit. You're here with me, Dr. Death Defying...This one's for all of you rock'n'rollers....'

Party waved the man goodbye as he picked up the boxes from the ground, walking towards the exit.

'Hey you need help with that?' Bonnie's voice asked from behind when she saw the bright haired boy battling against the heavy mass he carried. She got up on her feet and rushed to his side.

'Huh, yeah, I could use a hand...' He admitted as he turned around, dropping one of the boxes on the ground. 'Thanks.' He smiled briefly, before making his way out.

Bonnie felt something unusual in the Killjoy's emotion, he was different, vulnerable. The tone of his voice was cracked and soft, like he wasn't putting up a show anymore. As if for just the third of a second, she could hear the real part of him, the same one that sometimes reflected in the depth of his broken gaze.

She placed her new gun in the pocket of her jacket and picked up the wooden box at her feet. It was surprisingly heavy, making her gasp a few struggling sounds as she followed Party who was already walking in the red lighted hallway.

After what seemed like a long minute, they finally reached the Trans at the side of the road. Party opened the trunk and proceeded to load it with the new stock, placing each boxes beside one another.

Daytime was falling down and the sky was turning red. The fainting rays of the sun pierced through the clouds and a soft gentle evening breeze was pushing the dust across the sand, creating a soothing resonance. Bonnie pressed her back on the side of the car and stared at the scenery, speechless. Party had just closed the trunk and saw her. He joined her side as he grabbed the pack of cigarette in his pocket - only to realize he didn't have a lighter anymore. He laughed silently.

'What is it?' Bonnie asked, intrigued.

'Nah just, I don't have a lighter anymore.' He told her, showing the cigarette in his hand.

'Guess it's better not to have a lighter than to be dead.' She chuckled quietly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ears.

'Heh, you're right about that...'

Both watched the moving clouds, taking in the stillness of the moment.

There was a long silence, just before Bonnie spoke out again.

'I saw something, back at the station...'

'What do you mean?' Party frowned, turning his head.

'I entered inside and, there was this, thing in the back...lurking at me.' She paused before continuing. 'It was a Droid's arm, practically destroyed on the ground.'

'That's strange...' Party passed a hand through his red dirty locks, wondering.

'I don't know how it got there, maybe it's someone looking for me. I used to know them, the Droids, you know.'

'Back in Battery City?'

'Yes, they were the only friends I had. And now I'm scared that one of them has tried and risked their life to find me... I'm not...' Her voice cracked. 'I'm not worth it...'

'Well, maybe that droid's still alive, you don't know what happened Bonnie...' Party told her quietly, eyes sorrowfully popping out.

'You're right, I, don't know what happened...' She mumbled, wanting to believe those words so badly. She focused on her boots who were playing with dirt from the ground. A second silence came, letting the sound of the wind speak for the words they couldn't express.

Bonnie slowly lifted her head, daring, needing to look at him properly. Party felt his body reacting to her immediately. He trembled from the inside. Without knowing it his mouth slightly opened, letting the sound of his sharp breath to resonate in between the small space separating them. He was trying to speak, but the words stuck in his throat. There was something about the way they both drifted apart so easily, when their eyes met, when their bodies, were standing so close. There, in the stillness around them, feeling like they suddenly were the only two survivors of this earth.

'..think we better go home.' Party whispered, his voice barely hearable as the bright color of his hair blew wildly in the wind.

'...yeah.' She breathed out.

They both entered in the Trans silently. Overwhelmed by everthing that happened during the day. Party took the wheel and Bonnie rested her head against the seat, closing her eyes to the sound of the engine.

(Zone 6)

It was dark outside when the car approached the green diner that was shining in the distance. There was Ghoul and Jet walking outside, coming back from their daily watch. Party parked the Trans at his usual spot and made his way out. Bonnie followed shortly as she woke up from a brief nap.

'HEY FUCKERS!' Ghoul chanted from afar, exhausted from a long day he was starting to act a bit crazy.

'What do you want, asshole.' Party replied casually to his friend as he opened the trunk of the car, hearing Ghoul's laugh echoing in the distance.

'Got the new stuff?' The raven haired boy asked when he arrived closer, reaching Bonnie's side immediately. 'I hope this little prick wasn't too much of a pain in the ass.' He bragged as he leaned in for a tight hug.

'No, it was alright.' Bonnie hugged him back, knowing how touchy Ghoul was. The Killjoy smelled like sweat, probably from a busy day keeping the Dracs away. Jet also looked exhausted, he stood in the back as he said a quick hello. He waisted no time and unloaded the merchandise of the car, walking straight towards the diner.

'So how was Dr. D? Did he give you a gun or something? He's kind a pretty wicked guy the first time you meet him...' Ghoul was talking so fast it was hard to keep up with what he said. It made Bonnie laugh to see how excited he was.

'Yeah, he's, quite something.' She grabbed the laser gun from her pocket and swung it in front of Ghoul's euphoric expression.

'OH MY GOD! You got a fucking LASER GUN, wow, fuck, Bonnie, I'm so happy, seriously, wow.' The sight of the purple weapon made him lose it even more, he quickly leaned in for a second hug, cursing and laughing uncontrollably.

Bonnie held him tight and watched as Party's figure was already taking away.

'Yeah, I guess I'm a killjoy now...' She mumbled against Ghoul's sweated neck.
