I'M TRAGIC

Picture Perfect

The sounds of my alarm echoed throughout my basement. I turned away from my desk and abandoned my drawing of David Bowie. I walked to my bed which was about five feet away from the desk and then I turned the alarm off. I looked at the time, 4:30. Perfect. In about an hour I believe the sun will be rising and I can watch it. Maybe I'll be inspired to paint it. I don't know, depends on what I feel.

Ten minutes pass and I walk to the bathroom that is connected to my room. I live in the basement which is cool because I get my own room, my own bathroom, and my own privacy. Which I need, well what every teenager needs. I turn the knobs for the shower and the water runs through the shower head. I hum something as I undress myself and hop in the hot shower. I shudder at the amount of warmth hitting my cold skin. Then I become comfortable and begin washing my body and greasy hair.

After I got out of the shower I searched for some clothes. I but on a blank black shirt and a pair of baggy black skinny jeans. Then a black sweatshirt with a small Misfits logo that is on the top left part of my chest. Close to my heart. I then looked in the mirror after I got my clothes on and analyzed my face. Bags were under my eyes, dark circles surrounded my eyes making me look like I had two bruised eyes. I walked out of the bathroom and gathered all my necessary needs for today. Before I left my room, I looked over my room and let out a sigh. Then I turned my body around and walked out of the basement. I ran up the steps and entered the living room.

The living room was a small room with one big sofa that stood in the middle of the room but it was what separated the dining room from the living room. A small sofa was pushed against a wall and that wall separated Mikey's room from the living room. I tiptoe throughout the living room towards the kitchen. I pass the dining table and I am met with a doorway which led to the kitchen. I walked in the kitchen and turned the light on. I put on some coffee and searched the kitchen and dining room for my pack of cigs. I finally found it and lit a cigarette. I inhaled the toxic nicotine and exhaled the moment I stopped inhaling. Smoke left my mouth and I held onto the cigarette in my right hand.

Five minutes pass and the coffee was almost done. The scent of coffee and cigarette smoke filled the kitchen and it made me smile, I really like the smell of coffee and cigs. It's 5:00 am and the sun would be rising in about an hour. I poured myself some coffee and walked out the front door, which led me to the porch that was painted with a light green color but the paint was beginning to fade and the wood under it began to show. It sort of made our house really ugly but it sort of added character, just like the other houses in these neighborhoods.

A sudden breeze hit my face as I closed the door slowly, trying not to wake anyone up. I took a drag from the cancer stick and then I sat on a chair on our porch, having my coffee mug sit between my thighs. I hold onto the cigarette for another second and then I pull it out of my mouth. I exhale some smoke and let the rest invade my lungs. The sun hasn't risen but you could see the faint glow across the skyline. Oh how I missed these mornings. I took a sip from my coffee and glanced at the house across from me. Then I let my eyes wonder and observe the house. Soon my eyes stuck to a figure that was sitting on their window sill.

I then focused only on the figure sitting on the window sill. I blurred everything out except what was going on in the two story house across the street on the second floor. There was music escaping the room and I tuned in to what was playing. The Ronettes. I smile at the song, this person must be a romantic. Then after about forty minutes the sun is beginning to rise. The record replayed itself and I still watched the figure. He was smoking a cigarette which reminded me that I had one too. I looked at my hand and saw that it had gone out. I frowned and looked at my half cup of coffee, that was definitely cold. Then I brought my eyes to the scenery and gazed at the beautiful sight. Twenty minutes went by and the sun peeked over the horizon. I memorized the look of it all, it was perfect. Picture perfect. Then I looked back at the teen, who must have been my age. I noticed that he was taking pictures of the sunrise, smiling. Suddenly I heard yelling. I had brought my attention back to reality and looked at the sun then back at the window. The person was gone and I frowned.

I take my body back inside and I'm welcomed by warmth. Then I hear a thud from a room and a muffled "ow" broke the silence within the first floor. I laugh at the sound and close the door quietly. Then I heard another door open and I saw my little brother with bed head exit his room.

"Morning sunshine." I greeted him as I walked across the living room with my cold coffee on one hand.

"Morning Gee." He smiled, lazy like.

"It's 6:00 am bud, better get yourself ready." I say as I poured my coffee into the sink and rinsed it out.

"Okay. Hey, pour me some in about ten minutes?" He asks, yawning a little bit.

"Sure thing." I smiled.

Mikey left the living room and entered the bathroom across from his bedroom. The sun shown through the curtains and lightened up the room a bit. I started to walk around the living room trying to find something to do within the time span I was given. Instead of finding something to read or to draw, I decided to clean the room a bit. During the duration of ten minutes I found ten dollars and some change, some of my favorite pens that I thought I had lost forever, and a book that I have not taken an interest in. Maybe I just got the book because my grandmother recommended it to me. I'll tell her I didn't find interest in it.

"Gerard, are you going to get my coffee ready?!" Mikey yelled, still in the bathroom.

"Yeah!" I responded.

I left the living room and entered the kitchen. The coffee machine was next to the fridge, which was to the right of me after I went through the doorway. I turned to the fridge and got Mikey's favorite creamer, vanilla. Then I got a cup from a cabinet that was across the kitchen. I got Mikey a creamy white coffee cup and poured some coffee and creamer in it. I started to hum Rock n Roll Suicide by David Bowie as I stirred the coffee, mixing the creamer in the coffee. Then I heard the door to the bathroom open and I looked over my shoulder. I stopped humming and watched Mikey exit the bathroom. I looked back at the coffee and brought the coffee to him.

"Here you go." I handed the coffee to Mikey, who's hair was still a little wet and had only a pair of black jeans on. "You should put on a shirt, too."

"Thanks Gee." He smiled, ignoring my comment. Then took a sip.

"No problem. Hurry up and get ready, I want to see grandma today. I need to give her back a book." I explained.

"Oh, is that book in the living room?" Mikey gestured to the room that was cleaner than yesterday.

"Yeah."

"Okay. That's a good book, I liked it. I don't think you would like it to be honest." Mikey said, taking another sip of coffee.

"Hmm." I replied and turned away from him and gathered my things. "Well, just get your things. I think school starts in an hour." I say as I look at the clock that says 6:30.

"Okay." Mikey responded and walked to his room.

I put all my things on the big sofa and sat with them as I waited for Mikey to come back. Then I heard a door open and close from upstairs, mom must be up. I looked at the staircase which was opposite of where Mikey and the bathroom was. Small footsteps were heard on the staircase and I waited for my mom's figure to appear.

"G'morning mom!" I greeted her.

"Morning baby." She yawned.

"Sleep well?" I asked as I moved my eyes to my lap, where my hands were set.

"Yes, very well." She yawned again, "Did you make coffee?"

"Yeah, I left some for you." I said smiling and playing with my fingers.

"Okay. You and Mikey leaving early?" I heard her get a coffee cup, I heard the cups clang as she hit just one against a few.

"Yep, going to drop off a book at the bookstore."

"Okay, make sure you pay a hello to your grandmother." She said.

"I know."

"Okay." I heard the coffee pour into the mug and then a spoon hitting the coffee. The only sound that could be heard throughout the house.

"G'morning mom!" Mikey's voice interrupted the comfortable silence.

"Morning love." I heard the smile in my mom's voice.

"Sleep good?" Mikey asked.

"I sure did."

"Good." I heard footsteps and they were coming towards me.

I looked at who was walking towards me and saw it was Mikey, "Ready?" I asked.

"Yep." He nodded.

I left the comfortable position I was in and frowned at the loss of warmth. I shrugged it off quickly and took my messenger bag and my car keys. Mikey and I then said our goobye's to our mom and left the house. I got in the car and started the ignition. David Bowie then started to play and I looked over at Mikey, who was smirking already. We turned the sound up high and drove to the bookstore.

As we drove to the bookstore with David Bowie blasting through the speakers, Mikey and I were singing. Laughing at each other and spending a good time with each other. It's been a while since we shared these times with each other. After about ten minutes we arrived at the store.

"Let's go." I sigh as I opened the open car door.

"Okay." Mikey replied.

We walked into the bookstore and looked around the silent, vacant bookstore. "Grandma?!" I yell.

"Hold on!" She responded and then a door closed.

Mikey and I looked at each other and smiled and nodded. We ran to the computer where we can search for books and also listen to music. The music was connected to speakers that were on the roof of the bookstore.

"What song?" I asked Mikey, smiling.

"Let's go with the usual, huh?"

I chuckled and nodded. We went to our playlist that she never knew we had and selected the song. We turned the volume up, loud enough to fill the store but also quiet enough so no one heard the song outside. Then the infamous song began to play.

"Gerard and Mikey Way!" We heard our grandmother yell.

"We know know you love it grandma!" Mikey screamed over the words, 'Fame, makes a man take things over. Fame, lets him loose, hard to swallow'

Our grandmother then came into sight with smile on her face. She walked towards us and we turned down the music so we could converse with her. "You boys always make my day." She smiled.

"Of course we do." Mikey smiled as he gave her a hug.

"I missed you two." She let go of Mikey and then held out her arms for me. I smiled and held out my arms, we hugged for five seconds.

"We missed you too." Mikey and I say in unison.

"It's been five months boys. I don't want to be so distant from you two."

"We didn't want to be so distant from you either." I said.

We created small talk, we told her on why we came back and why we decided on going to a different high school. She knew why but we wanted to keep the conversation long but all good things come short. We left so we could make it to school and not be late on our first day. Our grandmother basically had to chase us out. Before we left we were trying to give her the book back.

"Oh Gerard!" She screamed before we left.

"Yeah?" I turn around and told Mikey to turn on the car.

"Your Edgar Allen Poe book, someone checked it out. Hope you don't mind."

"The Raven or The Black Cat?" It better not be The Raven.

"The Raven, I know it's one of your favorites but he promised to give it back as soon as possible. He's my best costumer and I trust him."

"He better." I sass.

"Now Gerard, don't get that way." She scolded.

"Okay." I said, a little annoyed that someone had my book.

"Besides, I think he has read almost all the books in this shop. I decided to give him something that he hasn't read."

"Is that supposed to intimidate me?" I ask, hearing only the 'read almost all the books in this shop' and ignoring the rest.

"Yes." She smiled and went back inside her shop.

I scoff and smile, no one can actually enjoy reading as much as I do in this town. I walk to the car quickly, thinking that maybe her best costumer might be an old man that is new in town. But she did speak as if he was my age or something. I opened the car door and sat in the driver's seat and closed the door as I did so.

Mikey reached for the volume knob and turned down Bowie, "What did she say?"

"She just told me that my favorite book was checked out by someone." I said annoyed.

"Someone or some dude?" He asked.

"Some dude." I know I may be overreacting a bit but fuck, that was my favorite book.

"Knew it. C'mon Gee, let's go. I don't want to be late." He said, laughing a bit.

"Okay." I sighed and put the car in drive. I drove out of the parking space and went back the way we came from.

It was about 7:15 we would be there in about ten minutes. On the way back, Mikey was silent and so was I. We just listened to the rest of the David Bowie album.
