Spare Bedroom

The flight back to New Jersey wasn’t bad. I mainly slept during the flight. It was another 40 minutes in the car to the house. I had assumed a similar house to what Gerard had in California but was mistaken as we pulled into the driveway. It was actually smaller than the other house but still significantly larger than what I lived in with my mom. We all exited the car taking our bags with us as Lindsey unlocked the door for us to pile inside the home. I dropped my bags in the living room and began to look around. There were nicknacks and photos along the shelves and walls. There where tons of photographs of Bandit and my heart sank slightly. This house was a reminder that I didn’t grow up with Gerard. He had an entire family and life before I came into the picture.

“So wanna see your room?” Gerard asked as he walked into the living room were I was standing.

“Umm, yeah sure,” I stated. I turned following him lead. I felt the same way I did when I first moved to California. The complete foreign feeling of a house I should call my home. We walked up the stairs and down the hall to a door.

“Here you go,” Gerard stated pushing the door open. It was a typical room. It had mid-century furniture in the room. I opened what I thought was the closet to find a bathroom.

“I get my own bathroom?” I stated loudly. Gerard chuckled.

“Well yes. This was a spare bedroom,” he added. I nodded. A spare bedroom.

“Right,” I said.

“Are you ok?” Gerard asked walking over to the window and pulling the curtains opens.

“Yeah. Coming here… Coming here is reminding me of when I moved to California. I just feel very foreign in this place.” I admitted to him. He nodded.

“You are part of this family. We are all better for that. Don’t think on it,” Gerard stated walking up to me. “Now, we can change the bedding but do we need to change the furniture?” he asked simply.

“Yeah they’re fine. Can we get ride of the creepy vase on the night stand?” I asked looking at it.

“Yeah that fine. Would you like to shop tomorrow?” He asked walking towards the door. I followed him.

“That’s fine. I’m going to go call Derek,” I said with a smile rushing past him.

“Come on, 18 hours,” he shouted as I ran down the stairs and past Lindsey.

“He’s my best friend,” I shouted back. I rummaged through my sweatshirt I had been wearing to locate my phone. I walked near the back window taking a photo of the porch which was covered in snow. I sent the photo to Derek knowing he would figure it out.
