Peroxide In My Eyes

I shouted a quick bye to Mikey as I ran towards the shelter of the garage from the rain. I readjusted the four bags I had and opened the door. The house was so quiet that it gave me goose bumps. I looked outside one more time counting the cars before shutting the door. Gerard and Lindsey were both home or at least their cars were. I shrugged it off and climbed the stairs towards my room, dropping the bags in my closet and pulling my jacket off, tossing it onto my bed. I could faintly hear the sound of a tv and began walking towards it in search of Gerard. It was probably everyone doing a Saturday movie marathon since it was crappy weather out. I turned into the room to quickly regret it. There on the couch was Gerard and Lindsey in a very promiscuous position.

“Oh my god,” I yelled quickly turning around and covering my eyes.

“Shit,” Gerard said followed by the sound of rushed movement.

“Um hi, I’m home,” I said loudly hoping it would cover the noises I was hearing.

“Hey Rylynn, how was shopping,” Lindsey said in a panic.

“I’m going upstairs,” I quickly said exiting the room entirely.

“Sorry Ry,” Gerard said followed by faint laughter. I quickly ran upstairs and into my room. I wished I could wash my eyes out to remove that image. I knew they where married but I did not need to see that. I made gaging sounds while searching for my phone. Pulling it out of my jacket I selected Derek’s number ready to hit send when a knock came to my door.

“No,” I answered quickly.

“Rylynn,” Gerard said sounding like he was holding back laughter.

“Go away. I really, really don’t want to hear or see you,” once again gaging on the image.

“Come on. It’s not that bad,” he said opening the door.

“Uhnnnn. Go away,” I whined. “Your clothing is not straight and really I-I don’t need to talk about this. Like ever,” I stated making obnoxious faces. Gerard leaned on the door and waited for the faces to stop.

“Ya done?” he asked with a smile.

“Why, why do we have to acknowledge this?” I asked while falling on my bed and covering my eyes with a pillow. Gerard let out a sigh.

“Not like this was on my top ten list for things to talk to you about. Listen we’re sorry. Bandit went out on a play date and you were with Mikey. We thought you would be gone longer and things just kinda happened,” he explained.

“Ahh I don’t need to know what did or didn’t happen,” I said into the pillow.

“Ok. Well we’re sorry. We are two married adults, we do those kinds of things,” he added.

“Yeah thank you for that,” I while making gaging noises. Gerard chuckled.

“Ok, I’ll leave you alone,” he said before hearing his footsteps walk away. Making another gaging noise, I picked up my phone again, this time hitting send on the call. It wasn’t long before Derek answered.

“Hello,” he said sounding half asleep.

“I caught them,” I said without a hello.

“You caught who?” Derek asked.

“I caught them on the couch. No shirts,” I explained.

“You mean Gerard and Lindsey?” Derek asked.

“Yeah,” I confirmed. Derek busted into laughter. “It not funny. It gross. Like really gross.”

“No that’s fucking hilarious,” Derek countered.

“If I put peroxide in my eyes will I just be blinded or will the image be erased?” I asked Derek.

“Bad idea. Don’t do it,” he stated into the phone.

“The image won’t leave my mind,” I said while continuing to make gaging noises.

“Just image, at one point that was your mom and him,” Derek shared.

“What’s wrong with you. Yuk.”

“What do you want me to say?” he laughed back.

“I don’t know, distract me,” I said.

“Mac shut her hand in a car,” Derek informed me.

“Really? How bad is it?” I asked. We continued to talk as if a day hadn’t passed since we last saw each other. In fact,135 days had. I had been hard on Derek. Distancing myself on purpose to not feel my mom’s death and to let the band move on. Maybe Mikey was right though, maybe they weren’t ready to let it go. We talked until the sun went down and then some. It wasn’t until Gerard knocked on the door that I realized what time it was. I looked at my night stand as Gerard opened the door leaning against the frame that I saw my clock read 10pm.

“Yeah I should probably let you go it must be late there,” I said to Derek, not really wanting to go.

“Yeah it is but it was great to hear from you. I miss you Ry,” he said softly. His voice finally showing how tired he must be.

“I miss you too. Night,” I said just as soft. I hung the phone up and looked at Gerard.

“Did Mikey at least feed you?” Gerard asked. I nodded. Silence engulfed the room.

“So what’s up?” I finally asked him.

“Only a couple of days left at school,” he started. I wasn’t sure if it was a question or statement.

“Yeah 4 to be exact. Not that I’m counting,” I said with a smirk.

“Sure you aren’t,” He said as he push off the door frame and walked toward the bed. I swung my legs over to sit up and he joined me. “You looked a lot like your mom earlier with that jacket on. She had one just like it.” He seemed distant in memory.

“It was her’s,” I finally added after a moment of silence. “She a… she gave it to me the first night I played live. I’m surprised you and Mikey recognized it.” Gerard let out a small laugh.

“She didn’t go anywhere without that thing, including all the clubs she went to.” Worry flashed across his face briefly.

“Dad, I’m not her,” I finally said looking at him. He looked back, stroking my hair. For so many years I had said that same phrase to my mom about not being my dad and here I was saying it to him.

“I know. I know you aren’t,” he added before kissing my forehead. “I’m heading to bed. See you in the morning.” With that Gerard wondered out of the room, pulling the door shut as he exited. In 10 days I would be back in New Jersey. Back near my home. Back to where it’s cold and snows. Back to Derek and the memory of my mom. I sighed at the thought and grabbed out my notebook.
