Brushes

Several weeks passed before I had adjusted to the idea of Gerard leaving. I still didn’t like it but I clearly didn’t have much voting rights in the decision. The holiday season was coming upon us which meant shopping and traveling back to New Jersey. Apparently Gerard’s mom was not giving up on meeting me soon and he finally caved. I slid my notebook into my nightstand drawer and grabbed my jacket since it was finally cold enough for a light jacket. I walked downstairs to see everyone in the kitchen.

“Do you want soup or salad for lunch?” Lindsey asked as I entered the room.

“Neither, Mikey is picking me up,” I stated opening the fridge for a water. I turned back around to see Gerard looking at me like I was crazy. “If you sit like that, it might stick.”

“Where are you going with Mikey?” Gerard asked continuing to look at me like I grew another eye.

“I honestly don’t know other than he’s insisting on taking me shopping for Christmas gifts. He said he talked to you about it,” I stated throwing my hands in the air.

“Well he didn’t,” Gerard added rolling his eyes. He rolled his eye exactly like Bandit and I.

“Oh now I get it,” I stated pointing at Gerard.

“Get what?” Gerard asked sipping on his afternoon coffee. “And pointing isn’t polite.”

“The similarity. Now I get it,” I clarified causing Lindsey to burst out in laughter. Gerard shot her a glare. “I would apologize for my attitude but hey it does run in the family,” I added with a smirk.

“Knock it off,” Gerard said rolling his eyes again. “Can you believe these two,” he asked Bandit. She shrugged. Just then the door opened and in walked Mikey.

“Hey,” he said to everyone.

“Mikey what the hell man,” Gerard said instantly. Lindsey chuckled before providing a hello to Mikey.

“You can’t just show up and take my child,” Gerard stated.

“She didn’t tell you,” he asked.

“Oh no, don’t blame this on me. You are the one that wanted to go shopping and you said you’d clear it with him,” I stated.

“Oh right. Can I take your kid shopping,” Mikey asked looking at his brother with a chuckle. I smiled and slid my leather jacket on.

“Yeah but you have to feed her,” Gerard agreed.

“Hey human here, not a dog,” I said with an upset tone. Gerard shot me a smirk and then his smirk fell. He looked at my appearance not pulling his eyes away.

“What do I have something on my face,” I asked glancing at Mikey to see a similar look.

Mikey gathered his composure and said “No you’re fine, let’s go.”. Lindsey looked at Gerard confused, his eyes to on me with a look I’d never seen. I shrugged and picked up my boots sliding them on.

“Do you need money,” Lindsey asked looking for her purse.

“No she’s good, my treat,” Mikey answered for me.

“Ok we’re outta here,” I added reaching for the door.

“Sam,” Gerard said then shock his head, “Rylynn umm be careful please.” I stopped walking and looked at him and then it all made sense. I was wearing a leather jacket. Her leather jacket from when she was twenty. I had been wearing it for years now but I’m sure it’s one that he recognized as hers and one he didn’t know I had. I let my hand fall from the door. I stared at him in shock for a second. I didn’t resemble my mom that much so for someone to call me her was a new event in my life.

“Yeah,” I said nodding before quickly turning and leaving the house. I climbed in waiting for him to arrive. He lingered in the house for a moment. I looked down at my sleeves. I had almost forgotten this was hers. I smelled the collar hoping that there might be a remanence of what she once smelled like but the scent was long gone. It now smelled of a sweet scent I couldn’t place. Mikey opening the door pulled me back to reality.

“You ok,” he asked looking over at me.

“Yeah. He’s just being weird,” I justified. Mikey nodded and started the engine and beginning to drive. “I didn’t really think I looked like her,” I finally said after a few minutes of silence.

“You resemble her but not in the way you look like Gerard. I think it’s the jacket that did it for him. She used to wear one exactly like it,” Mikey explained.

“It used to be hers. She gave it to me a couple of years ago. Actually the first night performed on stage.”

“Oh yeah, The Band,” Mikey said with a smile.

“You so don’t have to say it like that. Yes, I was once in a band. Not a big deal. As I recall, you where once in a band,” I said raising my eyebrows at him. He let out a laugh.

“I’d love to hear some of the music sometime. Maybe even at a performance in New Jersey,” Mikey said.

“That’s not going to happen. I told them to give the spot up and they did. I just wish… I wish they’d keep going. Even if I’m not there.” It was refreshing to say that out loud. “I don’t think I’ve told that to anyone.”

“Maybe they aren’t ready for it to be done,” Mikey said as he pulled into a parking spot.

“Okay, who are we shopping for?” I inquired to change the subject.

“Your parents,” Mikey said without thinking. It only took a fraction of a second for him to realize what he said. He looked up at me, my face most likely displaying confusion. “I ah.. I mean…” He attempted to form the right words. I held my hand up.

“It’s ok. I know what you meant and besides, he is my dad and I guess that makes her my step-mom. She might be evil, the court is still out on that one,” I said attempting to lesson the tension. I opened the car door before he could object. Mikey did the same and wrapped his arm around my shoulder as we walked towards the store.

“The jacket looks good,” he stated. “That’s probably why they want to keep you in the band,” he said with a teasing tone.

“Oh shut up,” I said shoving him slightly. We entered the store, both laughing. It was a small hobby style store. Tons of art supplies. I looked around at all of the expensive supplies scattering the shelves.

“I say we start at the back of the store,” Mikey suggested. I nodded following him. I picked up a lay brush examining it.

“My mom hated when I started to get into art. Mikey why are we here,” I finally asked. This wasn’t the typical holiday shopping one would do.

“Because I think this is a great place for you to pick something out for Gerard and Lindsey. You like art and they like art and it makes sense,” he answered picking up some latex paints.

“That it? No alternative motive here?” I inquired.

“No, your art is your business,” he stated. “What about some new paints for Gerard’s orcs?”

“For his orcs,” I asked raising my eyebrows.

“Yeah the miniatures,” Mikey clarified.

“My father is the biggest dork ever,” I said walking away from where Mikey was standing. I could hear him lighting chuckle.

“Well yeah,” Mikey answered as if it was obvious. I stopped somewhere around canvases.

“Fine paint for little creatures works for me. What am I supposed to get Lindsey? I don’t really know her that well.”

“Yeah, letting people in is kinda important for that one,” he said beginning to shuffle through things.

“Yeah I know. Just wish she’d stop acting like she’s my mom. She’s not. My mom is dead,” I said blankly. Mikey set down what he was looking at and turned to me.

“Is that why you don’t like her?” Mikey asked. I inhaled and looked around the store.

“How about brushes? Everyone likes a good brush.” I walked into the next isle. Mikey followed in my wake.

“I assume you don’t want to talk about this subject?” He asked.

“You got that right. So brushes?” I asked holding up two options.

Notes

Sorry for the delay. I had two close deaths in the family in April.

Let me know what you think.
