Copying Identifiable Markings

As I walked into Mrs. Peterson’s class I stopped at her desk slamming the paper onto the surface. She looked up at me, collecting the paper from the spot I placed it as I turning and walked back to my seat. I watched her eye the document for a moment before glancing up at the clock that hung above the door. Her eyes fluttered over the class as the bell rang, signaling the beginning of class.

“Good Afternoon Class. Since we discussed your paper the last time we meet, I’d like to give you all some time to work on your layout. This is going to be the only class time set aside for this project so if I were you, I’d use it wisely. I have to step out for just a moment, Gabriella, keep an eye on the class,” She stated as she approached her desk. She picked up the piece of paper I turned in and exited. Once the door shut, the classroom began to murmur.

“Hey what happened yesterday?” Jeremy asked turning in his chair to face me. I let out a sigh and faced him.

“She gave me shit about not taking notes yesterday. She said I’m going to fall behind if I don’t focus and attend class. Told me I had to get some form signed or they’d call you know who in,” I explained setting my pencil down and turning towards Jeremy.

“Don’t tell me you actually got it signed?” Jeremy asked rolling his eyes.

“Well it showed up signed… just not by him,” I said looking away quickly. Jeremy’s eyes went as large as a deer’s in headlights.

“You forged it?” He said loud enough that several people turned our direction.

“Shh. God Jeremy be quiet,” I said pushing my hand towards his mouth.

“Rylynn, do you know how much trouble you’re going to get in?” Jeremy asked placing his head in his hands.

“She’s not gonna figure it out,” I stated smirking at Jeremy. “I am very good at, let’s say copying identifiable markings, yeah we’ll go with that. I am good at it and I’ve done my research,” I said leaning back and proud of my actions.

“Right. Will your copying identifiable markings hold up against her calling you know who and verifying that it’s his?” Jeremy questioned. My face fell and I sat back up.

“She wouldn’t call him. No way that was the whole point of the letter, to avoid calling him. No it’s not gonna happen.” I knew that the words coming out of my mouth weren’t truths but instead me trying to convince myself that what I was saying was true. I did all of this to avoid the confrontation with Gerard. I did all of this to avoid Gerard being worried. I did all of this to avoid the world thinking less of Gerard, Lindsey and Bandit.

“Yeah that’s probably why she stepped out to begin with,” Jeremy said with a laugh. “You are going to get grounded. oh wait, aren’t you already grounded,” he laughed.

“Jeremy shut up. This was me clearing everything up not adding to the problem. And yes, I’m still grounded although I’m not quite sure he knows what being grounded really is,” I said. The door opened and everyone instantly went quiet. I gave Jeremy a confused look and slowly pulled my notebook out of my bag.

“Rylynn, are you working on your project?” Mrs. Peterson questioned. The entire class turned towards me.

“Yup,” I said with distain. Our eyes stayed locked for a moment. I eventually gave up and began to draw in my notebook. The remainder of class was quiet. Students seemed nervous just to ask Mrs. Peterson a question. Class ended with the sound of the bell. I stood quickly trying to rush out of the classroom and into the safety of the hallway.

“Rylynn, A word please,” She stated the moment I reached the door. Jeremy rubbed my back briefly before I dogged out of line and slowly walked to my teachers desk.

“You asked for me?” I said rolling my eyes as the last student exited the room.

“I did. Your father will be meeting us here in a few minuets as well as Principle McKay,” she informed me. She motioned me to take a seat in the front row.

“I’m sorry what?” I instantly said refusing to move.

“Your father and Principle McKay will be meeting us in a minute. It will be faster if you stay here and don’t go wondering the halls,” she said leaning on her desk. Irritation and anger began to swell inside me.

“And why would he do that? You told me if I got the letter signed, it would be fine,” I yelled.

“Let’s not raise voices Ms. Way,” she said. In that moment, Gerard walked into the classroom looking concerned. “Oh good, Mr. Way. I’m Mrs. Peterson Rylynn’s english teacher. Please both of you have a seat,” she said motioning the front desks. Gerard stepped forward to shake her hand and then took a seat. The door opened again and in came Principle McKay.

“Good Afternoon Mrs. Peterson, you must Rylynn and Mr. Way correct?” Principle McKay said stepping forward and shacking Gerard’s hand. Principal McKay pulled a side chair in between Mrs. Peterson and Gerard and settled into it.

“Ms. Way,” Mrs. Peterson stated for a third time for me to take a seat after I still did not move from my position. She played me for a foul and now Gerard was going to find out. I wanted to protect him from this and I did what I had to.

“Rylynn,” Gerard said pulling me out of my thoughts. I walked over not daring myself to look at Gerard as I took a seat. I could feel Gerard’s eyes on me the entire time.

“Mr. Way, this is what we called you in for,” She said placing the letter on the desk Gerard was sitting at. I let out a groan and through my head back. Gerard glanced at me and then read the paper.

“Mr. Way, I’m assuming this is not your signature based on the documents you signed when you enrolled Rylynn in this school. Is that correct?” This time Principle McKay was speaking.

“No, it’s not,” Gerard said in a dry voice. “Rylynn?” he questioned. I swallowed hard and looked the opposite direction.

“Mr. Way we see this with children of celebrities quite a bit. It’s a different form of neglect but it is still serious,” Mrs. Peterson began to explain.

“Shut up,” I yelled slamming my hand on my desk. “You don’t know a thing.”

“Rylynn,” Gerard warned, extending his hand to indicate for me to be silenced. For the first time our eyes met. He looked upset but not angry. “Mrs. Peterson, I assure you there is no neglect happening in our house. Lindsey and I are both very active in Rylynn’s life. This however, she didn’t mention.”

“Do you find it appropriate for your daughter to be forging your signature? Or not taking notes in class? Or not attending class at all?” At this point Mrs. Peterson leaned on her desk.

“He didn’t know about it. I did it okay. I did it. Not him. Just let it go ok?” I stated standing up from my desk.

“Rylynn, sit down,” Gerard said locking eyes with me. He waited until I was seated to turn his attention to Mrs. Peterson. “I don’t think it’s appropriate and I assure you my wife and I will deal with this at home.”

“Mr. Way, let’s be frank, Rylynn could be arrested for what she did here. I’m not sure if you where unaware of these happenings that you would even know how to properly deal with this situation,” Principle McKay stated. “We have programs to assist in building a better foundation for high profile children and their parents, I think this program would be perfect for you and Rylynn.”

“I appreciate your concern and I’m grateful that you brought all of this to my attention however, Lindsey and I are both capable of dealing with this at home with our own psychiatrist. Now if this is all, I’ll take this form home, we’ll discuss the situation, I’ll sign it and Rylynn will return it,” he stated stand up from the desk.

“Actually Mr. Way, I’m not sure Lindsey is the best to be involved, she isn’t Rylynn’s mother according to our records and when Rylynn meet with our counselor, her mother was a touchy subject. Involving Lindsey might make matters worse?” Principle McKay stated standing up as well.

“She is not her biological mother, no but she is the mother that Rylynn has right now. She does care and frankly I’m done hearing what you have surmised as a problem that doesn’t exist. If you don’t like that answer, I’m sure there is another english class Rylynn can go to or other private schools for that matter,” Gerard said grabbing the paper. “Rylynn, let’s go,” he added ushering me forward. We exited the classroom in silence. It wasn’t until we where at the end of the hall before anything was said. “Do you need to go by your locker?” Gerard asked.

“No, I have everything,” I muttered. We continued towards the main entrance. “Dad, I’m,” I began but his hand came up to silence me.

“We’ll talk about this all in the car,” he stated.

As I climbed into the car and shut my door I closed my eye, preparing for the lecture that was to come. Nothing was said. Not a single word. I wasn’t sure if I should bring it up or let it go. That was of course until we reached the main road.

“Well Rylynn, what do you have to say for yourself?” Gerard stated glancing at me briefly.

“I’m guessing I’m sorry doesn’t cut it?” I asked attempting to lighten the mood while shooting him a smile.

“No it doesn’t. Why didn’t you tell me you got a letter sent home with you?” He inquired. I let out a sigh, my head falling back against the seat. I bit my lip debating what to tell him. I was silent. In the heat of the moment, I wanted to protect him from having to deal with all of this but either way he was going to have to deal with it now.

“She said things that weren’t true. She said you and Lindsey weren’t giving me appropriate outlets for everything that’s happened in the past year. She said you where a bad parent.” I continued to look out of the window at the neighborhoods passing by. I didn’t want to look at Gerard. I didn’t want to see his response to what I had said.

“I could have handled it,” He stated. Silence engulfed the car again. “Rylynn you don’t need to protect me and you didn’t need to get in trouble for it. Twice I might add,” Gerard said.

“I’m sorry I’m such a disappointment,” I muttered. Gerard sighed in response.

“Rylynn, you aren’t a disappointment,” Gerard said sounding irritated.

“Well then I’m sorry I’m such an inconvenience,” I said without containing any of the attitude.

“Rylynn,” Gerard said in a final tone. I silenced my retort and glanced at him. “You aren’t an inconvenience. It’s ok to want to protect the people you care about. It’s an admirable trait,” Gerard said causing me to breathe a sigh of relief. “But,” Gerard said loudly as we turned onto our street. “Lindsey and I’s ego, doesn’t need any protection. Trust me Rylynn, we’ve been through worse.” When he ended his speech I looked out of the window again. “What was the letter about anyway?”

“I wasn’t taking notes in class. I guess we have some paper due on Arther Miller. It’s worth a large part of my grade and she was going over the details,” I said rolling my eyes.

“Why weren’t you taking notes?” Gerard inquired.

“Because it’s a stupid paper. They are all the same,” I said raising my voice. We turned into the drive and I spotted everyones vehicle. The guys where still in town so I’m sure this will be a great addition to them “getting to know me”.

“They aren’t all the same. You probably should have been taking some type of notes,” he said parking the car and taking his seatbelt off.

“Ok let me stop you there. I know it’s been a long, long, very long time since you have been in school but they are exactly the same. Introduction, 5 points to prove your case and a conclusion. There is literally nothing else to them,” I stated.

“Long, long, very long time? Really Rylynn?” he asked with a smirk.

“Just saying,” I stated with a smile and got out of the car attempting to walk inside.

“Hang on, young, young, very young padawan. What where you doing instead of taking notes?” he asked walking around and leaning on the passenger side of the car, folding his arms.

“Umm, nothing, literally nothing except wishing the clock would move faster,” I said walking towards the door. Gerard groaned but followed nonetheless. I walked in and kicked off my shoes throwing my backpack on the ground. I began to walk toward the stairs.

“Hey,” Gerard shouted after me. I had made into the bottom of the stairs. Gerard came walking up with my backpack in hand. “Go read Death of a Salesman,” he said handing me the bag.

“I did,” I said with confidence.

“Yeah, what happens in it?” Gerard said with a smile. I turned and looked at the couch where Lindsey and Krista where sitting.

“The salesman dies,” I answered looking back at Gerard.

“Go read the book,” Gerard said again raising his eyebrows. “And while you’re at it, read The Crucible.”

“Why would I read that?” I asked dropping my bag from my shoulder to my hand in frustration.

“Because the guy you’re writing your paper on wrote it,” Gerard said while waving his hands indicating for me to walk up the stairs. I whined and stomped my foot. “Go young padawan and we’ll talk about your attitude later.” I shoot him a glare before heading up the stairs. I pushed my bedroom door open, throwing my bag on the bed. I looked around not knowing quite what I wanted to do. I could write or I could draw but my heart just wasn’t in it after everything that happened. My emotions were to raw to think about any of it. I was scared I was starting to loose my mind. I finally decided to just do my homework, pulling my book out with a groan.
