Unapologetic Apathy

Explanation

Sam POV

My parents say me down with stern looks. I was at the rounded kitchen table, surrounded by familiar beige walls. The chilled paint on te cabinet. The paintigs that me and my sister did as kids. Polaroids of family members stuck to te fridge with cheesy souvenir magnets.

I guess i looked too spaced out, suddenly remebering it all. Away for a month, and everything seems so nostalgic and happy to me. I guess I forgot about everything g that happened as soon as I walke through the front door.

"Have you been doing drugs?"

"no," I told them honestly.

"You look like you're lying," thy told me. I guess I looked pretty bad. Sleepless and fevered. Sweaty and dirty and tired. But this huge grin on my face.

"You won't believe the whole story," I argued. Y mother sighed.

"You're sister is a vampire, how weird is your story going to be?" My mom asked. They knew, obviously, about Harley being who she was . what they didn't know was that I was a vampire hunter. And was previously hunting my own sister. I'd try and break it t them easy.

the hard part was that, if I told them that Harley bit me, they would have to talk with Harley, who would say that I tried to kill her. Harley came over every year and still didn't tell our parents that I tried countless times to track her down. I guess she still loved me, in a away. I still lived her. I just didn't like that she refused to be turned back.

"Well, um. I was turned into a vampire, too," I stated. I didn't tell them it was Harley. "It was on my way to art club. I didn't see their face," I lied, "and I didn't want to come home because I didn't want to hurt you."

"Well, you aren't anymore," my father said, not impressed.

"That's why I didn't come home. Because I didn't want to come home until I was changed back. I searched forever for a way. Until I met a man who knew a spell to turn me back!" I got excited. My dad looked serious.

"Did you pay him money ? Did he give you something?"

"No," I told them, "it was free. I didn't take anything. I just had to say a few words in Latin or something. And it worked. I don't have proof, but it worked. You don't understand how horrible it was being a vampire. I trie to tell Harley there was a cure, but she didn't believe me."

"Where is Harley?" They asked, and I shrugged.

"Last I saw her, smoking behind a restraunt," I said truthfully. Her smoking habits were the only thing I was going to tattle on. I hoped she got the memo and didnt say anything about my secret life. My parents looked stern and cross.

"How do we believe you? How do we know you just didn't run off?" My mom looked close to tears.

"I didn't. I swear. I just couldn't face you as a monster," I said, my voice cracking. My mom gave me a wet, tearful hug.

"Honey, you look so sick. Get some rest. We'll talk about it in the morning."

On the the way up to my room, I thought about all the lies I told downstairs. Leaving out the 2 years of hunting my sister and any other vampires I found. Lying about art class. If I said I got turned by Harley, they would soon find out that I shot her in the leg with a silver round. That I took her blood and mine and Frank's. I would never be allowed out of the house again.

I turned the knob to my bedroom door and swung it open. I was greeted by darkness....and Harley, sitting on my bed, waiting for me. I leaped back and held in a scream. I hadn't seen her since I was a vampire. She could potentially turn me again. I would have to wait six months, maybe a year if Gerard was going next. I whimpered.

"Sam, chill. I'm not going to get you," she scoffed and stood up, awkwardly. Her leg wobbled. "I just need to ask what you told mom and dad."

"I didn't mention you. So you don't have to brin up who I am," I stammered. She sighed, not in relief, but in annoyance.

"Who you are? Stop being dramatic. You lied to mom and dad, and instead of art class, you try and kill your sister. And you shot me in the freaking leg, Sam!" I bit my lip and winced.

"please don't turn me. I don't want to be like that every again."

"If you'd stop being so- oh, you know what never mind. Just don't tell anyone about me, I won't tell them about you. Got it, squirt?" I nodded, my mouth turning dry. She turned and opened my window. Before she jumped out onto the roof, she turned to me and smirked a goodbye. "Glad to see it worked for you."

And with that, she was gone.

Frank POV

"Ray, we have somethig to tell you."

"You're pregnant?" He asked sarcastically. I scoffed at him. He turned to face us more seriously. I started to stammer and choke on my predetermined words. Shit. I'd practiced them and rehearsed te exact script, but now, face to face, I couldn't speak a word.

"Gerard and I are dating," I said, all too suddenly and quickly. Not the script. Ray raise his eyebrows I shock, then his shock faded to disgust, then anger.

"Why? I thought you were tryin to find a way to kill him! Not fuck him! Al this time- how long have you been- shit. What the actually fuck, Frank. We were here for you, ready to kill another pesky bloodsucker, save towns. Now you're supporting him?" He yelled at us.

"Ray, I-"

"No, just shut up," Ray sneered. He took something out of his pocket. A silver knife. "He's using you, you know that? There are legends that claim a vampire can trick people into falling in love with them. He just wants blood, he always has." He longed the knife in Gerard's direction. Surprisingly, he didn't flinch. His hazel glass eyes just followed the tip as he moved it back and forth in the air, slowly and threateningly.

"Ray, please don't," I begged. That's when Gerard took over.

"I guarantee I am using no tricks on Frank. Put the knife down." He looked calm and composed in compareson to me, panicked, and Ray, livid.

"I'm going to kill you. I don't care about the deal you have, I'm going to do it myself," Ray spat, lunging over the counter at Gerard, who just dodged him with a straight face and wrestled his arms behind his back. Ray still gripped the knife, well, until Gerard pinched his wrist. The knife clambered to the floor and lande with a clink. Ray tried to wrestle out, spitting out a string of curses. He tried to kick Gerard's shins, and he begged for me to tell him to let go. I just watched him in shock.

"You know, when you come out as gay to someone," I said with a surpringky calm voice, "you want to be received with kindness and compassion. Not murder. I actually do love Gerard. He is sweet and kind and misunderstood. Sure, he can be an ass, but I still love him."

"He's hurting me!" He yelled.

"You tried to kill me," Gerard argued. "And let me tell you, when someone does that, they're dead by now. I'm doing this for Frank. He seems to like you, for some reason." His eyes had that dangerous gleam in them, and it was spooky how quick he went from dangerous vampire to normal boyfriend so quickly. I couldn't see his old self anymore, unless he did something like that with his temper of his....it looked eweirder when he was wearing my clothes.

I liked Ray because he was smart, funny, kind, and fun to hang out with. But I'd changed to see that there are two sides to peopls, and he hadnt. All he could see was black and white, good and evil. And at first, I thought Gerard was eveil. What he did was HORIBLE. But he has to eat. And I respected he wanted to become human again.

"Ray, he's going to be human in 6 months. We can treat him like a human, and not a beast," I sighed. Ray stopped squirming.

"He still wants my blood, though," Ray argued.

"If you're asking me if I'm hungry, then yes, I am. But I won't drink from you because I am nice."

"You drink from Frank. If you loved him, you'd let him out of te deal," Ray sasses.

"i don't tell anyone about Gerard not because I'm scared of him. Because I don't want him hurt...or others to get in the way. I let him drink from me because that's how he lives. I get information out of him because he isn't afraid to tell me things. It's not the deal that's holding us together. In the beginning, yes, but not now." Gerard stared at me with interest. Ray gave me a betrayed glare. He fell to the ground when Gerard let him go, and he crawled out I te eay. He tried to reach for te blade, but Gerard kicked it away.

"That was one hell of a speech," he whistled. I gave him a sheepish smile. Ray scrunched his face up in frustration.

"Okay! Fine! Just don't let him act like a monster! If you don't last until the next Blood moon," he got quieter and his message was more directed at me, "then you kill him." I swallowed in nervousness as he left the room.

There te was a long pause before I reached for Gerard's hands.

"It's done," I said grimly, "odds are Kelsie will explode. Sam will be disapointed but not surprised. Ray won't warm up to you soon, but please try not to kill each other." He pulled me into a deep embrace and took a deep, unneeded breath.

"It'll be okay," he assured me.

And God, I hoped it would be.
