Unapologetic Apathy

When I Come Around

The girl gave me a malicious grin. Her teeth were blindingly white like a Colgate commercial, just extra sharp. She had pointed, razor canines, just like Gerard's. I froze and dropped the bag. I wished I had brought my camera today. Two vampires?

"Hello, Frank," Gerard said in a confident voice. I raised an eyebrow. "Don't worry, it's nothing."

"Who's she?" I asked, knowing the answer already.

"Recognize her from the painting? Hasn't aged a day! But seriously, hard to tell she's the one in the portrait, without her face ripped out. Maybe we should fix that," he laughed. The girl pressed the blade into his skin, but it didn't cut him. He hissed in pain and clenched his fists. He squinted his eyes shut when the welt formed in his neck.

"You're hurting him!" I shouted at her.

"Of course, Franklin," she mused. I winced. "You see, Gerard's been a bad, bad, boy. I told him I'd come back in a few years, and he'd better have understood. Understood the way of life, I mean. Instead, he's just been killing people. Not spreading all the joys of his gift." She said it in such a sing-so g voice that I wanted to puke.

"Fuck you! I didn't ask for this! I'm not spreading it like a diseas-" e cut off with a scream when she pressed the flat of the blade on his skin. It burnt him and smoke sizzled into the air. The girl wore elegant gloves, protecting her from the silver.

"I said you would understand. I thought you would understand. But you aren't the first fault in the system. I've found reject vampires who refused to share their abilities. Selfish, and cruel, to keep the strength of their bloodline from continuing. And you should be lucky, darling, that you have such a strong bloodline." She purred. She took the knife away from his skin, leaving him exhausted and leaning back on the Headrest of the sofa. His eyes rolled back so I only saw the whites. A faint groan escaped his lips.

"I...won't...do it...you bitch," he grunted. That made her angry.

"Jst turn him already. I'll leave you both alone. That, or you both die. That's the only reason j turned you, because f the marrige arrangement. They're to continue the royal bloodlines, you absolute fool. And you thought I actually loved you. So just turn him, or I'll turn him and make you watch. Then I'll kill you." She sat in him so he couldn't move, the blade hovering on his neck . He let out a weak protest. I panicked.

I spoke up, finding my voice finally. "Fine, bitch, turn me. Yourself. Just try. You ad your obsessive bloodline shit. Just. Fucking. Try." She growle at me, then left Gerard's lap. He weakly called out and tried to stand, but he tripped clumsily over the table.

"Lindsey, wait, no," he stammered, pulling her arm rather roughly. She whipped around and gave him three quick lashes on the face, under his eye, with her knife. They sizzled, and he crouche over in pain. He screamed. Lindsey came back to me, pressing the knife deep into my upper arm. I couldn't scream. I just fell to my knees and clutched my stinging bicep. I looked past her at Gerard, jnjured but absolutely livid. He tackled her from behind and fought her, trying to wrestle the knife away from her.

I finally got up the courage to rush to them, and I tried to pin her knife arm down while Gerard wrestled with her. Together, we managed to pin her down, an I even swatted the dagger out of her grip. She hissed and scowled at us.

"You selfish cowards!" She shrieked. Gerard turned her head roughly to the side.

"Hand me the knife," he demanded.

"You'll hurt yo-" I argued.

"Hand me the fucking knife Frankie," he repeated, this time much harsher. He pressed down on her head so hard she started choking. But one thing I knew about hunting vampires: they didn't need to breathe. It was a charade she was pulling off. Guilt tripping. Pathetic.

I hesitantly handed him the knife. He grabbed it quickly and roughly, not flinching when the hilt started scorching him. The sound made me think of all the synonyms of the words. Searing. Melting. Sizzling. Singing. Flesh being destroyed. Pain. That didn't matter to Gerard right now. His hazel eyes now we're blood red. He took the knife, and with a bleeding hand he pressed the blade slowly against her neck.

"Feel. My. Pain," he chanted, repeating the three words under his breath over and over and over again, until she was pleading to be shown mercy.

"Please. I wa just trying to share my gifts," she weeped, "continue. The bloodline. Make our kind stronger." Gerard furiously shook his head.

"You're done keeping me on a leash," he growled. With a slow, excruciating cut, her weeping stopped. She stared wide eyed at the ceiling. Black blood dribbled out the corner of her mouth. She wa dead. Or was she? I fumbled in my pockets for anything resembling a wooden stake. A pencil.

"Use this," I panted. He looked at me with tired, surprised eyes. He was crouched I've her, still in wrestling stance, but more relaxed. He was leaning on his good arm, the other one was burnt and cut and scorched by the silver. Where she cut his cheek was swollen and purple. I winced. He grabbed the pencil from me with a shaking hand.

The air around us felt thin, surreal, and my voice was quiet in my own ears. I felt my heart pounding. I also felt where she stabbed me. When te team found out about this, they would never let me leave the house again. I raised a heavy arm to my would and it came away bright red. Gerard noticed this. He still had t stabbed her yet, to make sure she wasn't faking it. He licked his lips and looked spaced out, but most of his attention wasn't on my wound. He was looking at my face.

"What?" I asked. "Stab her! Make sure she's dead!" I imitated a stabbing motion with my good hand. With te pencil, I watched as he positioned it firmly where er heart should be, then smash it in harshly like a hammer and nail. Her lifeless bodie jerked, like a voltof electricity shocking jt.

Gerard still looked space out. "She's finally gone," he said steadily. He broke out in a grin, "she's finally gone!" He laughed genuinely. I smiled too.

But he fell over, twitching, then was passed out on the blood stained living room rug.
