I would Drive on to the End with You...

Four (4) Cuatro

We left the band hall feeling pretty good. Mr. Hayes was making phone calls to his friends, telling them about a hot new band he had just heard and we were blazed, walking in front of the high school gym. I sat onto the steps and sighed, smiling at my best friend sitting next to me.

“Roxy, you got a cigarette?” Luis asked as the Jersey kids sat around us. Gerard was next to Luis, of course, and Frank sat next to me, really close to me.

“Sure,” I grabbed my pack and handed cigs to whoever wanted one. I had just lit my smoke when I heard a commotion coming from the main entrance of the school. “What was that?” Everyone just looked at me like they hadn’t heard anything.

“What are you talking about, Roxy?” Mikey asked, right as I heard the same commotion from before.

“Right there! Did you not hear it just now?” The commotion got louder and I saw it in the gang’s faces that they finally heard it.

“What the hell is that?” Gerard asked as I stood up and walked down the steps to peek around the building. I won’t ever forget what I saw. The zombie apocalypse had busted out right in the front lawn of my high school. My jaw dropped and I couldn’t speak a word.

“Roxy?” Luis called out to me, but I couldn’t answer him. “Roxy! What the fuck is wrong with you?!” Luis ran down the steps of the gym and joined me at my side. He saw the same horrific sight I did; zombies were attacking everything in sight that had a pulse.

We saw our principal try to help a group of girls get to safety, only to get bit in the process. She grasped her wound, then began to convulse violently. She fell to the floor writhing and twitching. In less than ten seconds, she was back on her feet; going after the same group of girls she had just tried to help. Luis suddenly pulled me back to the steps and to the guys.
“Roxy, we have to get out of here, do you hear me? We can still get out, they haven’t seen us.”

“Luis, what’s going on? What’s happening?” Gerard took hold of Luis’s shoulders and gently shook him.

“Zombies,” I softly whispered. The whole gang looked at me.

“What the fuck you say?” Bob asked. Before I could answer him, Mr. Hayes bolted out of the band hall in a panic.

“Oh dear God, you kids get over here now!” He yelled. We didn’t hesitate. We quickly got up and ran to him, but a chilling thought ran through my mind and I stopped before I reached him.

“Lia and Mark are still in the school,” I said quietly. Luis turned around from his spot next to Mr. Hayes and looked at me.

“Roxy get over here, please,” Luis pleaded with me but I didn’t move.

“I’m sorry, Luis.” I turned around and took off running to the main building.

“Roxy!” Frank yelled as he ran after me. Luis told the rest of the gang something but I couldn’t hear him. I was too far away from him. I had to find my brother and sister. I had to find them fast.

I got the main building but everything was complete chaos.

‘How am I going to find Lia and Mark in this mess?’ I jumped as someone grabbed my shoulder from behind. It was Frank and Luis.

“What are you two doing?” I asked, as I tried to keep from getting run over by the huge crowd of kids.

“We came to help you, Roxy.” Luis stated matter-of-factly.

“What about the rest of the guys?” I asked as we began to make our way through the lost school.

“They’re with Mr. Hayes in the band hall. We told them we will be right back with your brother and sister.” Frank informed me as we began our search. He reached for my hand but I pulled away. My only priority was finding my family.

We had to keep calm because the zombies were pretty much everywhere. We stayed in a certain formation and we were able to get to the technology building. The tech building wasn’t as bad and we were able to get more ground covered. She wasn’t in any of the classrooms and I started to fear
the worse.

“Roxy, her class was going to eat lunch with the elementary today, remember?” Luis pointed out.

“Oh, fuck yea! Let’s go!” The three of us ran through the tech building and busted through the middle school. We took a sharp right and ended up in the elementary playground. I almost lost my lunch at the sight; small, normally cute children were turned into flesh eaters from Hell.

A lot of my sister’s classmates had already fallen prey to the zombie children and I was relieved when I saw my sister wasn’t one of them.
“Ok, let’s go,” I opened the big fence and we started our way into the playground. A little zombie girl ran to me and I kicked her in the face. She fell to the floor and I pulled my knife out and stabbed her before she could get back up.

“Damn, these poor kids,” I heard Frank mutter from behind me. I sighed and kept moving on, stabbing more little kids on the way.

We walked until we got to the elementary classrooms. I found Lia in one of them with a small group of kids, doing her best to keep them calm and safe. “Lia!” I called out and she got up and ran to me, giving Luis and me a hug.
“Lia we have to get out of here.” I grabbed her hand but she pulled away.

“I can’t leave the kids, Von.” She looked down at the small group of kids that had gathered around her. I sighed and looked back at Luis and Frank. They nodded at me and I looked at my sister.

“Ok, we’ll take them with us. We have to hurry kids, come on.”
We made our way back to the tech building. It wasn’t an easy feat and we lost a couple of kids on the way. It was hard making our way through a zombie infested school with an all you can eat buffet trailing us.

My sister took every child lost really hard. Once we got back to the main building, we had no children left and my sister was a mess. I tried to get her calm enough to ask her about Mark.
She wasn’t calming anytime soon so I had to think of something else.

“What if I take her to the band hall and you and Frank keep looking for Mark. I think it be best for Lia.” Luis asked as he put her arms around her shoulders.

“Yea that sounds pretty good, I don’t think we’d get anywhere with her. We’ll meet you at the band hall.” I told Luis. He grabbed my hand with his.

“You better come back, slut.” He told me with a touch of worry in his voice. I gave him a sad smile back and gripped his hand tightly.

“You know I will,” I let go of his hand and walked with Frank in the direction of the football field.

“Why are we coming here?” Frank asked as I peeked around the corner of the tech building to make sure the coast was clear.

“My brother has athletics before lunch and sometimes he hangs around to practice with his friends.” We made our way to the locker rooms without any incidents and I rushed inside. I saw my brother with a couple of his friends fighting off a couple of zombies with hockey sticks.
“Mark!” I called out, getting my brothers and the zombie’s attention. I rushed one and stuck my blade into its skull. Frank grabbed another one and threw it to the floor. He brought his foot up and stomped the brains in.
My brother cracked his hockey stick in half and stuck the sharp end through the zombies head.

“What the hell is going on here, Von?” My brother asked as he hopped down from the desk he was standing on. I hugged him and began to explain what all had happened since lunch to now.

“We have to get back to the band hall. Luis is there with Lia and some of our friends.” I motioned to Frank. “This is Frank, by the way.” I told my brother as we began to exit the locker room.

“Cool,” Mark said as he turned to his friends. “What are you guys going to do?” He asked. As he was talking with them I went a few feet ahead to make sure we wouldn’t get jumped.

“Roxy, what do you think is going to happen?” Frank asked me as I waited for my brother. He was saying goodbye to his friends.

“I don’t know, Frank. Who the hell knows, you know?” He suddenly grabbed me into a huge hug. I was shocked at first. I didn’t know how to react to this new, sexy and tall boy. I then began to feel myself melt into his arms. He smelt so good, despite all the running we had been doing. His head shifted against my neck and I felt chills running up my spine.

“Umm, hello? We just happen to be in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, do you two have to fall in love now?” I heard Mark say and I quickly pushed myself away from Frank’s embrace. I felt my cheeks go red and I cleared my throat.

“Come on, let’s get going, guys.” I lead Frank and Mark to the band hall. There were zombies hiding under the bleachers but we were able to jump the fence before they could become a threat to us.

After we cut through the middle school playground it was a straight shot to the band hall. We tried to bust through the door but it was locked.
“Fuck!” I yelled as I began to bang on it. Mr. Hayes opened it and pulled us inside.

“Keep it down, will ya?” He hissed under his breath as he locked the door again. “Are you guys alright?” He asked us as we walked deeper into the band hall.

“We’re fine, thanks,” I told him as Lia ran up to give Mark a hug. Frank ran to his friends and Luis ran straight to me. “I told you I’d be back.” I told him as he hugged me tighter.

All of a sudden, there was a loud banging on the door, but not the kind of banging a human makes.

“Oh dear God,” Mr. Hayes said as he looked at the door. “They’re not at the back door; you kids can still get out!” He yelled as the banging got louder. Then all of a sudden the door fell inward and a horde of zombies came flooding into the band hall. “Go! Get out of here, now!” Mr. Hayes began throwing chairs and music stands at the zombies, drawing their attention to him.

“Mr. Hayes! You can still make it!” I yelled as Luis pushed the huge back door open and everyone began running through it.

“Roxy, go now!” A zombie grabbed hold of him and bit down. “Auughhh! Go, it’s too late for me now! Go!” The whole horde was suddenly on him, but I could still hear his screams.

“Mr. Hayes!!!” I yelled, before Luis and Gerard pulled me through the door.

“What are we going to do now?” Lia cried hysterically. Bob looked at her and gently placed an arm around her shoulder. She began crying into his chest and he hugged her softly.

“We need to go home.” I said, as we began to make our way to the parking lot. I quickly doubled back after seeing my car was surrounded by zombies. “Fuck,” I muttered under my breath.

“What about the alley that leads to the street?” Luis whispered. I looked straight ahead and sure enough, I saw the alleyway that leads directly to the street that leads to my house.

“Alright let’s go,” I whispered. We then slowly made our way through the practice field to the alley. When we got there, we ran through the alley until we finally got to the street. “Ok, we just need a little bit more to go,” before I could finish I turned and saw a huge horde coming right at us. “We need to run now!” I yelled as we all took off down the street. I was the last; I wanted to make sure everyone I cared about was in front of me.

I never ran that fast before in my entire life.

I turned around to look at the horde behind me when I tripped and fell. My knees got scraped as they slid across the pavement and I bruised my face as it collided with the ground. I was dazed for a minute but then I snapped out of it and looked up, seeing the zombies coming straight for me.
“Oh holy shit,” I muttered as I shut my eyes, thinking that that was how my life was going to end.
