What You Believe
Doors
“Lydia don’t move.” I heard the voice shout from the door. My disorientated brain couldn’t quiet make out who it was shouting but they seemed so far away. The lips on my neck had left and even though I could tell the tempreture had gone back to normal I could still feel myself shivering. Shivering or shaking. It’s true what they say that time seems to slow when you expierence a scare, because, just like a switch being flicked everything seemed to play at double the normal pace. The yard started spinning, the wall seemed harder and my head seemed heavier and that’s when I felt myself drop. “Lydia wake up!” The shouting was a lot closer as I felt myself being shaken. I opened my eyes quickly, and, shot up from the floor grabbing my gun that I had in the side of my pants holding it out to whoever was in front of me. “Don’t shoot it’s me.” Frank shouted hands in the air to show he meant no harm. I looked round quickly for anybody else whilst Frank inched closer to me, pushing the gun down to the ground when he got close enough.
“What was that? Did you get a good look at him? He’s the killer.” I asked quickly, still looking round for anyway to get out. “I gotta go find him. He can’t have got that far.” I spoke quickly, shoving the gun into the back of my waistband and running towards one of the tables nearest the wall. That’s when I felt his hand grab my arm.
“Lydia he’s gone. Trust me he’s gone.” Frank looked at me pleading with his eyes for me to listen.
“How long was I out?” I shouted at him.
“A minute or so that’s not the point.”
“It is the point he can’t have got that far I can track him. This sick bastard is going to pay.” I shouted again yanking my arm away from him as I climbed the table before scaling the wall. I’d just jumped down sensing the direction the suspect went in when the voice rang out again.
“Lydia he has gone.” The voice came out from the shadows as I turned round quickly to see Frank leaning against the wall smoking.
“How did you get there so quick?” I shouted looking round for a gate.
“The same way I know he’s not in the city.” Frank looked at me walking over.
“You can’t know that!” I shouted, stumbling back quickly when Frank was in front of me, his eyes flashing I swear.
“Lydia this is not the time. Trust me. You open this door now and it’s not one that can be closed so easily.” The seriousness in his tone made my heartbeat quicken.
“He is a murderer who threatened me. There is no question about opening the door! I’m gonna kick the fucker in.” I told him storming off out of the alley and down the street quickly.
“I’m not going to let you do this. I can’t.” He shouted out, once again appearing in front of me, his hands holding tightly on to the tops of mine.
“What are you…” I stopped shouting as I looked round. “What the fuck? How did we? What did…?” I felt my heartbeat quicken, my hands get clammy and my breath become shorter.
“You need to trust me.” Frank spoke calmly, not moving his hands from my arms but loosening the grip on them. “And promise you won’t go for your gun.” He laughed a little. “It’s going to be hard for you to understand. Anything you believe before, after this it wont seem so real.” He carried on. “We’re in an abandonded warehouse close to the docks. I come here when I need to.” He finally let go moving back slightly as he flicked a light switch which illuminated the whole place. There was no torture devices or knives in sight, but, there was an old doctors bed and a utensil tray at one corner along with a computer. I stared at him trying to slow down my breathing, all the while trying to work out an exit strategy without being experimented on or whatever it is he was planning on doing. “I’m not going to hurt you, Lydia I promise. I just need you to trust me.” He spoke nervously making my cock my head to one side studying him. If he was going to hurt or kill me he was pretty terrified. “Do you want to sit down? It’s about to get weird.” He laughed a little pulling two chairs up facing each other, him sitting on one as I took the other, never once taking my eyes off him. I took a deep breath before looking up at me and starting. “There are myths in the world, of creatures that aren’t human or that possess powers. Witches, Wizards and Warewolves. In your world these are works of fictions, folk-laws told by past generations to try and make sense of my world, to rationalise the unbelieveable.” His sight never leaving me as he told me.
“I swear if you are about to recite Harry Potter to me I will shoot you and say it’s self-defence.” I told him honestly as he grinned at me.
“It sounds like that doesn’t it. But, no I’m not about to Harry Potter you. Within my world we also have other creatures. They used to be known as creatures of the night or night demons, before they were eradicated. You see they lived up to their name, praying on the vulnerable at night. Breaking into houses to kill them brutally. Man, woman and child were all toys to them. They are distant relatives of mine, ones I wish wasn’t where I came from.”
“What are you saying here Frank?” I questioned, somehow feeling oddly calm.
He paused for what seemed like forever before responding gently. “What I’m saying is I’m not human. I’m a creature you think you’re looking for, but, you’re not. I’m a vampire.”
