What You Believe

Unique Individuals

“I told you not to pull any Harry Potter crap on me!” I shouted reaching for my gun and standing up quickly, knocking the chair back with a loud clash.
“I promise I’m not!” He shouted holding his hands up staring up at me. “You need to know the truth.” He carried on looking at me.
“Look I’ve had enough of your shit. I don’t know how we got here, I don’t know how he did what he did, but, it’s going to stop now.” I glared at him before looking around the place for anything I could use as ties.
“Lydia. You can tie me to a chair. You can handcuff me. It will not stop me. I’m stronger than you think.” Frank spoke calmly as I looked at him quickly.
“How did you know I was thinking that?” I snapped glaring at him.
“Because I’m a vampire.” He repeated again as I straightened my arm out pointing the gun directly to his head.
“Stop lying! I’m not having you do this to me! You’re not going to make me go crazy!” I screamed in his face as he sat there calmly watching me melt down in front of him.
“Give me the gun Lydia. Please.” He spoke out softly, lowering one of his arms to hold his hand out to me. “I’m not going to hurt you I promise, but, there is a lot to understand and the thing that that bullet is made out of is starting to burn.” He whispered as my hand started shaking, he ran his hand up my arm and to my hand taking the metal object off me slowly, a faint red circle on his head where the gun had been resting like a burn mark. I looked at him for what seemed like forever before collapsing on the floor crying, the true realisation of everything that had happened hitting me. “I’m sorry this is so hard. I wanted to tell you at a better time but he has given me no option.” I heard his soft voice come out as I felt his arms wrap around my shaking form, picking me up slowly before carrying me off somewhere else.
“Please don’t hurt me.” I whispered hopelessly, still convinced he was a psychopath that had kidnapped me.
“Doll that is the last thing I want to do.” He whispered again, settling down on a bed still holding me to him tightly. “You just have to understand this, I told you that you shouldn’t have opened this door.” He whispered into my hair rocking me slightly as I tried to calm down.

It had been about 10 minutes since Frank had sat us on the bed trying to calm me down. I still felt like he was a psychopath, but, I also felt oddly comforted. “There is so much you need to know about Lydia.” He looked at me slowly as he balanced the two cups of steaming coffee in. “I’m going to explain it as simple as possible, if you feel yourself getting lost then you need to tell me ok? The last thing I want is for you to think I am something I am not.” He told me truthfully, stroking my cheek gently after handing me the mug. “What I told you isn’t exactly true. I am a vampire, but, within our world there are many… varieties of vampires.” He stumbled on his words trying to find the best way to explain it. “You see you have Nightcrawlers who are a direct resemblance of the night demons. They are truly horrific species that prey on the living to torture and kill, thankfully there are not many around anymore, they have been terminated for the good of mankind.” He took a sip of the strong coffee before continuing. “Then you have Vampiro who are of the Italian bloodline. They are strong, fast and selfish. They will help others, vampires or humans, as long as you make a deal with them. They won’t do anything for anybody else unless they get something greater in return.” He looked over at me as I nodded, holding two fingers to the palm of my hand to help me remember, causing him to smile. “The final kind is my kind, I’m a Moroi vampire. We’re from Romanian heritage and we’re drawn to the energy from the living. Hence why we don’t hurt or harm the living, unless we have too. We have unique abilities that vary across the race. For example, my ability is telepathy, that’s how I knew you were looking to tie me to the chair. My dad has the ability to manipulate objects and my mum can locate anybody or anything she needs to. It meant that if I ever lost my keys she’d find them and my dad would fetch them without us even having to move.” He laughed causing me to smile a little. “The myths are: sunlight doesn’t affect us, we’re dead. Garlic has no effect on us, and, staking my heart won’t work because you know no heart.” He watched as I drank my coffee which was now warm. “However, fire kills and silver burns. Hence the gun.” He pointed to the faint mark where my gun was rested on his head as I smacked my hand over my mouth.
“I am so sorry!” I shouted out, instantly feeling terrible.
“It’s ok, it just takes a little longer to heal that’s all.” He took my hand from my mouth slowly stroking my knuckles. “Have you got any questions?” He asked slowly watching as my eyes flickered from him holding my hand to his eyes.
“A million and one, what kind of vampire is the guy who is doing this.” I asked slowly, still not truly believing I was actually starting to comprehend this.
“I believe he is a Nightcrawler. There aren’t many left, but, there are still some. They aim to rule humans because they deem them beneath them. They believe that humans are the lowest of the low, because, they are not as advanced as we are. Every so often a Nightcrawler will show up on the radar and the assembly deal with them efficiently, this guy hasn’t shown up before and I can all but assume he is part of an underground organisation who are planning something major. What and why now is beyond me, but, the assembly will find out.” He informed me as I frowned a little.
“The assembly?” I questioned watching him as he exhaled loudly.
“A panel of…” He paused clearly trying to think of how to word it, “unique individuals.” Was the phrase he went for. “You have Vampiro’s, Moroi’s, Werewolves and Witches that deal with the unique kind to ensure that stability and peace amongst all kinds is maintained.”
“What?! You’re telling me that there is like a S.H.I.E.L.D style organisation for people with abilities?” I laughed out of disbelief.
“Well… yeah I guess there is.” He smiled as I carried on laughing. “It means that you won’t be able to get your guy. They will step in and eradicate him before you get the chance. Before anybody gets the chance to realise we aren’t myths.” He spoke quietly as I suddenly stopped laughing and stared at him.
“Oh no buddy. I will get my guy. I haven’t failed a case yet and no one or nothing is going to stop me now. This guy threatened me and the city your unique assembly has no authority or territory over us.” I told him honestly, daring him to try and say otherwise.
“This isn’t a discussion, its fact. You won’t get to him. They will find him before you even pull up your first piece of evidence. This is too dangerous and you will leave it. Trust me.” He spoke again staring at me with a stupid look of amusement on his face.
“You trying to intimidate me? I’m a big girl I can look after myself. And I think you underestimate my ability. You might have speed and telepathy, but, I have something a lot more resourceful.” I stood up making my way away from the bed and towards a door, as I heard him follow laughing.
“Oh and what would that be? Mrs I’m so resourceful I nearly got killed outside in a pub garden.” He laughed louder as I span on my heels to glare at him.
“I have evidence.” I smirked before swinging the heavy metal door open and making my way into the fresh air.
