What You Believe

Bang

“I seriously cannot believe we are finally here!” I smiled at my best friend Belle whilst staring up at what would now be our home. We had just recently moved from Manchester, UK to California, USA! A three story apartment complete with a basement is what we would call our home. The century old house had been converted into 4 apartments and we had bought the last one that was up for sale. We had been talking about moving since we became friends at the age of 12, then, circumstances and university halted that – so here we are 24 and 23 costume designer and a criminal profiler, picking up the keys to our grown-up house. We walked into get our bearings, seeing and admiring the house for the first time. Our stuff had already been shipped over, and, we had found a local firm who specialised in unpacking impersonal items: kitchen, bedroom and living room boxes all emptied so all that was left was clothes and toiletries. We walked in to see everything in its permanent place and unpacked boxes in the front room.
“Let’s choose our rooms!” I shouted dragging B up the wooden staircase to the second floor. We took our time looking around each room before both stating which room we wanted. She wanted the back room that overlooked a wooded area and the communal garden, whereas, I opted for the side bedroom where I had a slight view of the woods as well as half of the street and a clock tower that stood up high in the middle of the town that we now called home.

We both started to unpack our stuff, hanging up all our clothes and trinkets from back home. It was about an hour later once we met in the kitchen complaining about hunger. “We should really find out the takeaways in this place” Belle laughed as I groaned my agreement just as there was a knock on the door. We quickly looked at each other as we both instinctively looked quickly at the grey closed door, inching closer to it slowly. I looked through the spy hole to notice two muscly guys standing there with a carrier bag looking around the door frame. Belle did a silent countdown with her fingers as I swung the door open smiling, making sure to hide Belle behind it armed with her phone.
“Hi.” I smiled politely looking at them both trying not to show any fear.
“Oh hey.” The shorter one smiled at me as he looked surprised that I’d actually answered the door. “Honestly didn’t think you would have answered the door seeing guys like us on the other side of it.” He laughed a little nervously as he ran his hand over the back of his hair and neck.
“We’re your new neighbours, I’m Brian and this is Zachary.” The taller brown eyed guy spoke smiling.
“Hello there neighbours, I’m Lydia and my best friend is Belle.” I smiled awkwardly, not expecting courtesy calls so soon.
“We figured you wouldn’t have food or really know the area, the realtor said how you were coming over from England so we thought we would bring you some food over. Chinese. I hope you like it.” The green eyed Zachary spoke as he held up the bag smiling.
“Chinese is our favourite, thank you very much.” I smiled politely. “Would you like to come in and eat with us?” I pushed the door open a little wider as I heard Belle’s soft footsteps moving away from the door slowly.
“We don’t want to intrude we just wanted to introduce ourselves.” Brian smiled.
“No intruding.” I inched away from the door opening. “Belle we have guests!” I shouted as she made her way out from the kitchen.
“Oh hello” she smiled at the both.
“Belle this is Brian and Zachary,” I pointed to them both in turn, “they brought us Chinese food. They are our neighbours.” I closed the door behind them.
“Oh please call me Zacky.” He smiled as he watched me close the door.
“Well Zacky and Brian come on in whilst we get this served up.” Belle spoke out causing Zacky to look over at her.

We dished up the food they had brought, which so happened to be our favourites; lemon chicken and a beef Chow Mein.
“So how come you both decided to move over here?” Brian asked as we started tucking into our food.
“Oh better job prospects.” Belle spoke before shoving in a piece of lemon chicken in her mouth.
“I’m a costume designer and Lydia’s a criminal profiler.” She laughed as they both looked a little shocked.
“They both seem very interesting jobs, we’re in a band.” Zacky laughed.
“Oh cool! What kind?” I asked sipping on the can of cherry coke, which I am more than grateful for packing in my bag.
“Sort of metal, sort of rock I suppose.” he laughed as I looked at Belle.
“Well you’ll have to tell us the name so we can YouTube you obviously.” Belle laughed as they both looked sort of embarrassed.
“Maybe we will when we upload something.” Brian smiled at her, his gaze lingering a little longer than normal.

We carried on talking to the guys for about two hours or so before they noticed we were looking tired, the jet lag catching up with us.
“If you need anything bang on the wall.” Brian smiled at Belle who had showed them out. “We will be round as soon as we hear it.” He carried on as she nodded.
“Thank you but you might regret that if Lydia sees a spider she will bang.” She laughed causing Brian to laugh as well. “Thanks again for the food, you would never have someone do that in England.” She bit her lip as he nodded saying it was his pleasure as he moved off and walked to their door where Zacky was already unlocking it. Belle closed the door and made sure all of the safety measures were in order before turning to me smiling.
“Oh Mr Brown eyes is so perfect.” She laughed as she pushed the chairs under the table as I finished off sorting little bits of the kitchen out.

“Really? Mr Green eyes all the way.” I smirked as she nudged me. “I think we are going to like this place very much.” I laughed as we made our way upstairs to our bedrooms.
