Rebel love song
9th chapter
After that kiss, we’ve barely spoken for almost two weeks. One might think two weeks is enough to get over a guy I’ve never even dated and hardly knew for any longer than a month, but there was just something about him that made my eyes stick to him like metal on magnet. I couldn’t forget the feeling of his lips against mine no matter how hard I tried.
In attempt to avoid any awkward eye contact with Gerard during lunch, I started going to the band room. It was originally only meant for the members of the school marching band, but some guy there explained the band mostly consisted of last year’s seniors, so now the room is opened to anyone who wants to play music instead of lunch.
My asshole neighbor Alan apparently played the piano so I bumped into him a couple of times.
“I’m so glad you’re not hanging out with that faggot anymore.” He said one day. The piano was taken so he just dragged a chair next to me.
“Don’t call him that.” I said while tuning one of the school’s crappy acoustic guitars.
“What? He is one. You honestly made the best choice here.”
“Why would that be the best choice?” I asked, trying my best not to show how pissed off I was at his words.
“Dude seriously? You really wanna hang out with a fag? What if he has a crush on you? Imagine how gross that would be.”
At that point I was seriously considering punching him or telling him I’m gay, but then again, why would I waste my energy dealing with stupid people? Instead, I just remained silent, paying my attention to the guitar.
“Do you have a date for the homecoming already?” Alan asked after a while.
“I’m not really thinking of going.” I truthfully said.
“It’s your last homecoming, man! You can’t miss that!” Alan looked shocked.
“I don’t really know anybody who’d go with me.” Now that wasn’t strictly true. I was pretty sure Gerard would go, if it weren’t for the not speaking to each other thing. Or maybe not. He didn’t seem like the guy for homecomings and proms. Neither was I, but in my old school, Amy had always dragged me there. She said she’d be lonely without me, because Josh had always gone off and (unsuccessfully) flirted with almost every girl there.
“If you didn’t spend all your time hanging out with Gerard and you’d probably have at least five girls willing to go with you.”
“I’m not hanging out with Gerard.” I muttered.
“You’re hanging out with those three people -”
“Wait what?”
“You know… I can’t remember their names right now… is one of them Emma?”
“Ella. And Ray and Sean.” I corrected him through gritted teeth.
“Yeah, those guys. They’re the biggest fucking nerds in the whole school.” God, he was an asshole. “I’m just saying, girls swoon over guys like you.” I raised my eyebrows at him.
“You’ve got to be kidding me right now.”
“No, I’m serious. Taylor – she’s Mel’s best friend – wait do you know who Melanie is?”
“Yeah.” I nodded. She was Alan’s girlfriend.
“Well, Taylor thinks you’re hot. Mel says she has a thing for tattoos. I could set you two up for you, if she’s not going with Kyden already.”
“Um… thanks I guess?” I wasn’t really up for the whole idea. I didn’t know Taylor, of course, but I knew who Melanie was, and I knew that when she wasn’t busy swapping saliva with Alan, she was always with this girl with too much bronzer and an obnoxious laugh. If that was Taylor, I wouldn’t be interested in her one bit, even if I was straight.
“You’re welcome.” Alan smiled. “And the piano’s free. See ya later.” He finally went away.
“Oh god, what did he want?” Ellie dragged her chair next to me. She was one of the regulars in the band room. Mikey had introduced us to each other one day, when he was in the band room too.
“If you like all the bands Gee said you like, then you two should get along pretty well.” He had said that day. I still couldn’t get it out of my head that Gerard was actually talking to Mikey about me, and that Mikey had called him Gee. I thought it was the most adorable nickname ever.
Mikey was right. Ellie and I got along really well. We both liked the Misfits, and the Smiths, we both played the guitar, so we never ran out of things to talk about. We also both disliked Alan with passion.
“He wanted to set me up with his girlfriend’s best friend for homecoming.” I sighed.
“With Taylor?” I nodded. “Oh god… she’s the most obnoxious thing ever to walk on this planet. Once, when she was in freshman year I think, my mom hired her to babysit me and my younger brother… worst four hours of my life…” Ellie laughed.
“Oh god, that sounds terrifying.” I said, my hand reaching in my pocket. “Fuck… do you have any guitar picks? I must’ve forgotten mine at home.” I sighed.
“Um, yes I think I have a spare one in my pencil case.” She reached for her schoolbag. Her pencil case was scribbled all over with song lyrics – some I recognized and some I didn’t. “Here.” She handed me a bright green pick.
“Thanks.” I smiled and started warming up a bit.
“They should really buy a small box and just fill it with guitar picks. I mean they don’t cost much. You only get them for a dollar at Eddie’s… free, if you buy something else too.”
“Wait where?” I asked. Ellie raised her eyebrows at me.
“You’ve never been to Eddie’s?” She asked, clearly surprised.
“You’re forgetting I just moved here.”
“Oh, right. There’s a music shop in Trenton… I mean there are many music shops there, but Eddie’s is the best because they’re mostly specialized in rock music. I can write you the address later, if you want.” She offered.
“Thank you.” I smiled. “But oh fuck… Alan seemed pretty serious about setting me up with Taylor… Why didn’t you slap me? I should’ve said no.”
“Is he 100% gonna set you two up? Since when do guys set up things? I thought only girls did that…”
“Maybe Taylor isn’t as bad as we think she is…” I said. Ellie snorted.
“That’s like saying maybe calculus isn’t as hard as we think it is.” I couldn’t help but to smile.
“Oh god, I’m so fucked.”
“You can always say no, you know that?”
“Alan would probably think I’m crazy… I mean, is Taylor considered hot? I heard Sean say she’s hot once. He’d think I’m crazy for refusing to go with a hot girl…”
“You’re probably right… but what are your other options? You can either say no or go with her. Unless you find someone else to go with by the time Alan introduces you two.”
“Yeah but who?”
“I could go with you.” Ellie blurted out and then immediately blushed. I looked at her.
“You’d seriously go with me?”
“I mean, better me than Taylor. I hope.”
“Yeah better. Thanks. I owe you one.” I said and started paying attention to my guitar again. “But you know I’m gay, right?” I asked after a while, wishing immediately I hadn’t.
“I know. And I’m not interested in you like that, dummie. I’m just saving your skin.”
“Okay. Thanks again, really.” I said. She said something back, but it was cut off by the bell ringing, announcing the end of lunch break. I gave her back her guitar pick and put the guitar back in its place, and headed towards the Chemistry classroom. Gerard was already sitting in his place. He was wearing a Smashing Pumpkins T-shirt and I could see eyeliner smudged in the corner of his eyes. I dropped down next to him without saying a word. He didn’t say anything either. What else was new, right?

“Frank, wake up! You’ll be late for school.” I heard my mom’s voice. I rolled over and tried to process what she just said.
“What?” I murmured sleepily.
“School starts in 20 minutes.” She said. I jumped out of my bed.
“What?!”
“I thought you went to school already.”
“Shit!” I started searching for my jeans.
“I can drive you.” She offered. I looked at her gratefully.
“Thank you.”
Still I didn’t have enough time to eat anything. I quickly brushed my teeth and rinsed my face. Just when I was ready to go, I noticed I needed to shave. Well, fucking great! There was no way in hell, I’d have time for that so I just grabbed my schoolbag and jogged to my mom’s car.
I got there three minutes before my first class started, and trying to get to my locker through the packed corridors wasn’t exactly the easiest thing. When I finally got there, I only had one minute left. I opened my locker and took my calculus notebook out, before shoving my leather jacket in it.
When I closed the locker I noticed all the people in that corridor had already disappeared into their classrooms. I turned around and gasped when I saw Gerard standing in front of me. How the fuck did he get here?
“Frank.” He breathed out.
I don’t even know how it happened, but the next thing I knew is that my back was pressed against the locker and I was kissing him, or he was kissing me, it didn’t really matter at that point. I heard the bell go off, announcing the beginning of first period, but that didn’t matter either. All that mattered were his lips on mine, and his hands gripping my waist and pushing me gently against my locker door. God, I forgot how good it felt to be kissing him.
“We’ll be late to class.” He murmured when we finally broke apart.
“We’re already late to class.” I said and he chuckled softly. His hand reached up to stroke my cheek.
“You need to shave.” He said, his fingers tracing along my jawline.
“I know.”
“We should really go.”
“I know.” I said, not moving an inch. Screw calculus, right? I wrapped my arms around his waist, pulling him even closer to me. “Why did you kiss me?” I asked. I needed to know. I don’t know if I could take another kiss, followed by two weeks of not talking to each other.
“I… remember when I said we can’t be together because I needed to sort something out? Well I did it and I was actually gonna ask you out. I don’t know how it turned out like this.” He giggled.
“You did?” I beamed.
“Yes. So, uh… would you go out with me? Again?” He smiled shyly. I pressed a quick kiss on his lips.
“Sure.” I smiled.
“Great.” He beamed. “Tomorrow afternoon good? I’ll text you the details.”
“Sounds great.” I couldn’t stop smiling.
“Now we should really go to class.”
A couple of kisses later, I let him go to his class. I, however, didn’t go to calculus. I was already fifteen minutes late anyways, and the teacher didn’t tolerate latecomers. Instead, I sat down in an empty corner and listened to music, still grinning like an idiot.
