Save Yourself

“Gerard, please wake up,” Chelle pleaded, gently tapping her brother’s cheeks. “Come on, Gee. Open your eyes.”

His eyes slowly fluttered open to reveal his hazel orbs.

“Chelle?” he questioned confused. “What happened?” he wondered, slowly sitting up.

“I’m not sure,” she replied uncertainly, also looking around at the chaos.

It was unusually quiet compared to the noise of the battle that raged not too long ago. Here and there people were slowly coming to and/or helping up friends.

“Are you okay?” the raven-haired male asked, looking at his sister worriedly.

She nodded, “Yeah, I’m fine. I’m just not so sure about everyone else.”

He groaned, trying to get up.

“Here, let me help you,” she offered, pulling him up off the ground.

There was nothing left of the war previously fought. There was almost no sign of the Rebellions either except for the dead ones lying around. That immediately caught his attention and he frowned deeply.

“What is going on? How long have I been lying here?”

“Not that long,” Bob’s deep voice reached his ears. “Everything happened so fast.”

“What happened?” Gerard asked again. Why was it all over so sudden? He was certain that they would have to kill every single one of their enemies before this would be over.

“Well, little Felix here saved all our lives,” Bob smiled at the little girl standing next to him. “I’m not sure how she did it, but a huge shock wave blasted through the cave knocking over everyone. The Rebellions scattered after that; the ones that survived anyway. The saying is true that dynamite comes in small packages,” he finished chuckling.

“Where’s Rae?”

“I’m not sure,” the bigger male frowned. “Everyone’s still looking for loved ones and we’re trying to separate the living from the dead.”

Gerard winced and then started looking around for the beautiful red-head. He came across Ray, sitting miserably on the ground.

“Hey, Ray, what’s wrong?”

“Have you found Rae yet?” Ray countered.

“I’m looking for her. What about Tatiana?”

The tired man with the afro lifted up his shoulders looking over his shoulder. Gerard followed his gaze and his heart dropped.

“Ray, I’m so sorry,” he said sincerely.

“That last wave of fire was just the last…” Ray breathed deeply, tears starting to run down his pale cheeks.

Gerard grew even more anxious to find Rae. He gave Ray a pat on the shoulder and then ran off to find the redhead, hoping against hope that she was okay, that she was still alive.

Erin stumbled along the bodies lying about. There was barely any room to walk and she was careful not to step on anyone. If any of these dead Rebellions decided to jump up right now, she’d probably drop dead in shock.

“Oh,” she heard a low moaning to her left, causing her to jump almost ten feet in the air.

“Ugh…”

And then suddenly Frank’s head popped up from beneath two black shapes.

“Frank! Shit! What the hell… You nearly gave me a heart-attack!” the blonde girl exclaimed, clutching her chest.

The dark-haired boy shook his head and looked around him confused as if trying to figure out where he was. Suddenly he jumped up and looked at the two dead Rebellions warily.

“Fuckers,” he muttered.

“Frank!” Erin said loudly, finally getting his attention.

“Erin?” he said slightly surprised by her sudden appearance. “What are you doing here?”

The girl put her hands on her hips and stared at him intently.

“Did you hit your head or something?” she wanted to know.

The teen scratched his head confused and then replied with a simple no.

“Where’s Alex?” he wondered.

“I don’t know, Frank. Why do you want to know?”

“She kind of saved me,” he said quietly, still looking around for the other girl.

“Get up kid. It’s over,” Bob told the crying girl.

Annabel looked up at him with tear-filled eyes.

“He’s dead,” the male stated. “Good thing too, because he was just going to drag you down with him.”

The teen nodded, slowly getting up.

“He wasn’t all bad,” she said looking back down at Arin’s dead form.

“He had you brainwashed,” Ashley told her. “He did the same with Alex. Have you found Gabby and Mikey yet?”

“Gabby is fine. She was hidden inside one hell of an ice-igloo,” Bob chuckled in response.

“Mikey is still missing though.”

“We can help you look for him,” Erin offered as she and Frank approached the group.

“Frank!” someone called out and he turned to see Chelle running towards him.

His spirits lifted as he saw the brunette was safe and sound. He caught her in his arms, lifting her off the ground in a tight embrace.

“I’m so glad you’re okay!” he murmured.

“You too! You wouldn’t believe the amount of times I saw you face a Rebellion,” she exclaimed and then sighing contently at the knowledge that he was okay.

“Alex saved me the last time, but I don’t know where she is,” he said, letting go of her. “I just hope she’s okay.”

“Rae!” Gerard called out, still in search of the redhead. He’s been everywhere, but he couldn’t find her. “Rae!” he called out again.

He heard a muffled voice and then finally he could make out his name being called.

“Rae, where are you?”

“Gerard! I’m right here.”

He followed the sound of her voice until he found her stuck beneath a boulder.

“Rae! Are you okay?”

“I’m alive,” she said, offering him a small smile. “But I’m kind of stuck.”

“Hold on a sec,” he told her, trying to move the boulder. “I’ll be right back.”

The redhead sighed tiredly as she waited for him to return. He returned a few minutes later with Bob and Frank by his side. A couple more minutes later she was free. The girls had already arrived by now and Chelle lowered down next to her and immediately healed all her injuries.

“Thanks,” Rae smiled gratefully as she slowly got up from the ground. “Everyone okay?”

“Almost,” Bob replied and everyone looked towards Ray.

“What do you say we go back home?” Gerard asked.

There was a unanimous agreement and they all made their way along the cave back to the entrance. The group froze as they reached the surface and was faced with all the left over Rebellions.

“Don’t worry,” Alex’s voice assured them as she stepped forward. “We mean no harm. Arin’s dead and since apparently I’m the strongest, I’m in control now. You have nothing to fear anymore. The Rebellions’ reign of terror is over. You won.”

The dark shapes started to move away, but Gerard stopped them.

“Are you just going to return to civilization?”

“They’ve always been a part of civilization,” she informed him. “But they won’t kill anymore. I was thinking we could do something good like protect the streets at night rather than causing them to be completely deserted. Oh, and I’m so sorry guys, but we found Nana,” she finished quietly as two Rebellions stepped forward, holding the dear old woman gently.

Rae buried her face in Gerard’s chest as she started crying over Nana. No one could help their emotions at the sight of her dead and helpless form. She was the one who saved them all. She was the mother of them all.

It was three days later and one burial was being held for everyone lost. Everyone had already went back home, but Gerard stayed by Nana’s grave a little longer.

“Don’t worry, Nana,” he whispered. “I’ll take good care of everyone. We’ll rebuild Una. Everyone will be stronger than ever. We’re united now.”

He slowly stood up and then walked over to Rae who was waiting a few feet away.

“It’s time to restart life,” he told her, taking her hand and walking towards the rest of their waiting friends.
