Save Yourself

Face Down

It was the morning after the night of chaos. Everyone was inside their homes taking care of the hurt and injured. Outside in the streets, the wreckage of the night before was still clear. It looked like a war had been waged within the streets as broken decorations and shattered glass now decorated them. Here and there people were starting to clean up the mess, the sun hanging sadly in the sky. There was no sign of the massacre that had occurred since there were no bodies. The Rebellions caused mass destruction, but they never caused a mess. They never left a body. The whole place was dead. Not a store was open, not even the school. Everyone was too shaken up to just pick up the pieces and carry on.

“Argh!!” Bob groaned angrily, rubbing at his red eyes. “This is just a disaster! What the hell were they doing out last night? What the fucking hell possessed them to come out like that and kill everything??????” he shouted, throwing over a little table standing nearby.
Gabby jumped in shock. She has never seen Bob like this before. He scared her.
“I knew Mikey should’ve stayed in! I should never have listened to you. I never should have let him go! At least then he’ll still be…” the big man stopped talking and gulped loudly.
Ashley sat quietly on the couch not saying a word. She hasn’t said a thing since the night before.
“Bob, it’s okay,” Gabby whispered, walking over to him and wrapping her arms around him.
“No, it’s not,” he sniffed, furiously trying to wipe away his tears. “I am so damn sick and tired of this shit! Haven’t we lost enough already??” He fell down on the couch and buried his face in his hands.
“I can’t do this anymore,” he sobbed in defeat. “I can’t take any more of this beating. I’m fucking down on the ground and this time I’m not getting up again.”
Gabby took in a sharp breath. It killed her to see Bob in this condition. He was always her support; the strong one keeping her up and going; and yet here he was giving up.
“No, Bob… You can’t give up now,” she said soothingly.
She was also dying on the inside, because it was her fault that Mikey wasn’t there. She hated herself for leaving him the way she did. Tears started to flow freely down her cheeks when she thought of his cheeky grin and the fact that she would never see it again.
“We’ll get through this,” she whimpered.
“No!” Bob shouted, jumping up. “I am done!!”
His face displayed rage and yet a complete helplessness; an unwillingness to continue. He turned and walked off, slamming his bedroom door behind him.
Gabby stared after him broken. Then it was her turn to jump up and she stormed out the front door…
Images of flames flashed before Ashley’s eyes. She could feel the intense heat; hear people screaming; people close to her. She could hear people shouting and trying to get to them, but she already knew that they were too late. They weren’t going to get to them in time.
The gas leak that caused an explosion in their apartment killed several people. Their room had been only two floors above the explosion, but the flames and the scorching heat almost immediately hit them. She was in the apartment with her brother and his wife and daughter. It was just a nice little family lunch until it turned into a living hell. Fire workers fought to get them out. They were able to save her brother and his daughter. The brunette had been unable to see whether his wife had also been saved, because she was gone before that. Large beams were collapsing into the room, bringing more flames and heat down with them. She knew she was dead.
The fires from the night before just brought all those memories crashing back to her. She’d rather cope with those memories though than thinking about the loss of Mikey. Her heart went out to Bob and Gabby. They were both obviously broken. Bob freaked out as soon as he heard what happened. It took all they had to keep him from going back to look for the teen. She started choking back sobs, but that didn’t stop them from coming out. Tears streamed down her cheeks and fell heavily onto her lap. Bob was right, this was all just too much to handle…

“Ah,” Gerard winced as Rae stitched up a deep cut above his left eye.
Gerard, Rae, Frank and Chelle had been together when the Rebellions hit. The second they realized what was happening they headed straight home. Gerard took Rae and Chelle with him, because he could hide them until they were safely inside. However, being invisible didn’t make him invincible and he was hit by some of the objects flying about during the attack. Frank ran home in a flash and immediately checked to see if Nana was safe. The old lady had been smart enough to get home safely.
“Sorry,” she apologized.
“I really hope that Tati and Ray are okay,” Chelle said, pacing the length of the living room nervously.
“They’re fine,” Frank assured her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.
She gave him a small smile. He sat down on the couch and pulled her onto his lap, wrapping his arms around her.
“Everyone is fine,” he whispered, but she wasn’t sure whether he was trying to convince her or himself.
“I don’t get it,” Rae said, putting away the first aid kit. “What were they doing out last night? They’re not supposed to come out on a night the moon’s out. They never have. Why now all of a sudden?”
She frowned, biting her lower lip as she wondered about it.
“It’s fucking ridiculous,” Gerard muttered the fury in his voice only slightly noticeable. “I still don’t understand these things. What are they and what is the point in all of this? Nana?” he directly addressed the old woman.
She seemed to be returning from a far-away place as she looked up at him. Gerard still felt intimidated by her presence. There was something almost deity about her. It was like she had the power to do anything.
“Those are questions we all have, Gerard,” she said, sounding far away. “Rebellions are… they’re human… just like we are. They just haven’t accepted their fate on Una and now they are taking it out on everyone around them.”
“That’s bullshit!” he exclaimed. “I was pretty stubborn about this whole thing as well, but hell; I don’t go around killing everyone! It’s called self-control! How about being humane!”
“Calm down,” Nana said calmly, yet firmly. “There’s nothing we can do about it right now. All we have to do at the moment is take care of our loved ones. Things will work out in the end. As for last night, I can’t explain that myself. It bothers me, though. What were they doing out?”

A few embers shifted as Erin moved, slowly getting up from the dust and mess on the floor. That strong wind from the night before destroyed everything. She looked around to see several bodies lying around. She touched the back of her head and noticed blood on her fingertips.
“Damn it!” she growled, getting to her knees and crawling over to the nearest body.
“David,” she choked out, her voice hoarse.
She gently shook his shoulder and finally his eyes snapped open.
“Erin, are you okay?” his first words came out barely above a whisper.
She nodded, looking around her again.
“What happened?” she wanted to know confused.
“Rebellions,” a voice came from one of the dark corners in the club.
A dark figure emerged from the shadows and approached them. The teens froze, but immediately sighed in relief as they saw who it was.
“Bellz, what are you doing here?” Erin couldn’t help asking. “Are you okay?”
The young brunette nodded and walked over, falling down next to them.
“I went looking for Arin. I don’t know what happened to him. They looked like…” she couldn’t get the words out and took a deep breath to calm herself down.
“Did they hurt you?” David wanted to know.
She shook her head, “No.”
“We have to find everyone. Where’s Alex?” Erin asked, looking around to try and find her friend.
The other teens both shook their heads, because neither of them had any idea of where the blonde girl was.

“I’m just glad you’re okay,” Tati said, hugging Ray tightly. “When those things came out, I thought we were all dead.”
“You know I would never let anything happen to you,” Ray told her seriously.
The two had been in the club when the doors burst open. Without a second of thought, Ray had grabbed Tati and ran out the back door with her. It was like instinct drove him to protect them both; immediately told him what was happening.
“I hope he makes it,” the raven-haired beauty sighed sadly, looking at the figure in bed.
Small moans escaped his lips every few seconds. He was obviously in a lot of pain, but unfortunately there was nothing they could do for him.
Ray nodded in a silent response also looking back at the small frame.

Hey, okay, so, depending on interest, there is a sequel to the story. It's not quite on par with this one, but it explains what happened to Mikey. If not, then all you have to know is that he's fine.
Thanks again for reading!
xoxo
