The Drums of the City Rain

Chapter 8

Gerard was driving me back to the hotel. It was dark now. Gerard refused to look at me all night. He didn't even talk to me. And to be noted, it was a long drive. I sighed. It was all quiet until Gerard broke the silence.
"No," he mumbled to himself.
"What?" I asked.
He looked at me. "No." he said louder.
I looked at him with confusion written all over my face. Gerard saw it. He sighed and pulled the car over on the side of the rode.
He turned to me. "I'm sorry," he mumbled.
I couldn't help but think I broke him.
"What?" I asked.
Gerard took in a sharp breath. "I can't be having feelings for you. I just can't. But for some reason, I do. I know I'm not a pedophile. I barely know you. What is wrong with me? And now I have to spend the rest of the week with you. Is that a good thing, or a bad thing?"
It seemed more like he was talking to himself, rather than me.
"Gerard," I started. I didn't know what to say next.
After a moment or two of silence, Gerard rested his head on the steering wheel. "Well, now you know why I'm a screw up."
"You are not a screw up, Gerard," I insisted.
"All you wanted was to meet a singer you liked. Someone you looked up to. You can't look up to me, kid. I'm no wiser than a rock. I hope I didn't ruin this for you. I'm just a whiny baby. I'm sorry."
"You don't have to be sorry," I mumbled. "What if I said that I liked you to?" I said quietly.
"Don't. You'll have to go back home in a few days, anyway."
"Who says I have to stay there? I'm going to move out soon, anyway."
"Ugh. Why do you have to make this so complicated?!?" Gerard turned over to me. "Please don't turn this into more than it has to be."
"Is that what you want?" I asked. "Is this really what you want?"
Gerard sighed. "No," he quietly mumbled.
"What?" I asked.
"No, okay?" Gerard said louder. "But it's the way it has to be."
"Is it really, though?" I asked.
Gerard stared at me. "You really like me, don't you?"
I just looked at him and giggled. "Well, duh!"
He sighed. "Fine." was all he said.
What was that supposed to mean? Gerard just restarted the car and continued to drive. The remainder of the drive was completely silent. We soon arrived at the hotel. Gerard parked and got out without a word. He followed me inside and even all the way to my room. After I walked inside, I looked at Gerard as he stood in the doorway. He lifted up his hand and pointed to my suitcase.
"Grab your stuff," he commanded.
"Why?" I asked.
Gerard sighed. "Because you're coming to my house."
I said nothing. I just shoved my clothes into my suitcase and grabbed it.
"Come on," Gerard motioned behind him. "Let's go."
I I followed him down to the lobby. We checked out and quickly left. We hopped in the car in the same spots we were occupying previously and Gerard took off.
"So, why are we going to your house?" I asked.
"Because," Gerard replied. His expression was indifferent.
"O-kay?"
"I thought I should get to know you better if we are to make this thing work." he explained.
I smirked. "Oh, so we're a thing now?" I giggled.
"You know what I mean, you little shit." there was a hint of playfulness in his voice. Just a hint.
I took in a deep breath. "Ahh. Loosen up, Gerard."
Gerard shot me an annoyed look, followed by a smile he just couldn't keep in. He started to laugh, and I joined in. The laughter was soon ceased.
"Am I really uptight?" Gerard asked.
"No," I replied. "You're just... unusually serious right now."
"That's because I was serious," Gerard replied.
I grinned while shaking my head. "Okay, whatever."
"Ah, we're here!" Gerard exclaimed as he pulled in to the driveway of a ginormous and beautiful house. "Come on!"
I grabbed my stuff and followed Gerard inside.
As I walked into the doorway, Gerard lifted up both of his arms and spun around. "Welcome to mi casa!"
I let out a sharp breath. "Wow, Gerard. This is amazing!" I laughed in disbelief. I stared at the living room. So modern, so... extravagant. I looked at the fuzzy black carpet and the contrasting white leather couch and dark grey walls, while one was painted purple. Beautiful.
"So, first things first," Gerard started. "I got the guest room and the couch. Which one?"
"Hmm..." I thought for a moment. "I'll just take the couch. I don't want to overstay my welcome."
Gerard raised an eyebrow. "Okay, whatever you say."
I smiled with satisfaction.
"Here, I'll go get you a blanket," Gerard continued, hurrying to a large room. He soon returned with a large puffy white blanket and a white pillow and handed them to me. They felt cool and soft, like a cloud.
"Thank you!" I exclaimed.
I set the pillow down on the couch and curled up in the blanket as I lied down.
"You don't want dinner?" Gerard giggled.
I bolted up. "What do ya have?" I asked.
"Whatever you want," Gerard replied.
"Hmm... I don't know, actually."
"Let's go take a look, shall we?" Gerard invited me.
"Okie!" I replied.
I jumped off the couch and followed Gerard into his kitchen. God, it was beautiful. Black marble counters with specks of white, marble floor tiles with the same design, black and white cabinets, black walls--you'd think it would all clash but no, it was just beautiful... and it was all so... clean.
Gerard opened a few cabinets. "See anything you like?"
"I don't know" I replied.
"Tell you what. Let's just order a pizza. How's that sound?" Gerard suggested.
"Sounds good to me!" I agreed.
"Pizza it is, then!" Gerard confirmed. "What kind?"
"Pepperoni's fine," I suggested.
"Kay, pepperoni it is!" Said Gerard.
"Someone's unusually happy," I observed.
"Well, you're here. Why wouldn't I be happy?"
I giggled like a little girl. "Aw, little old me?" I asked playfully.
"Yes, little old you," Gerard said mockingly.
Gerard pulled out his phone and ordered two large pepperoni pizzas. We went and sat on the couch. Gerard decided to put on a movie. We waited for about an hour until our pizza arrived. Gerard took the pizza and payed quickly. I jumped up like a child as he walked over with the pizza. I ate like I haven't eaten in days, while Gerard was good at two pieces. When I was finally done, we decided to save the rest for later. We sat back down and continued to enjoy our movie. Gerard sat really close to me and wrapped me in something of a hug. While we were both starting to drift off to sleep, I sat up slightly. Gerard hummed softly and hugged me tighter.
"Gerard?" I asked.
"Hmm?"
"What are we?"
Gerard replied in a hot, tired voice. "Whatever you want us to be, babe."
Babe. He called me babe. I snuggled back down into his arms, somewhat satisfied with his answer. I eventually drifted off to sleep in Gerard's embrace.
