The Drums of the City Rain
Chapter 6
I awoke to the sound of soft knocking at my door. I groaned and grabbed my phone. Nine-thirty in the morning. What the actual fuck?
"Frank?" It sounded like Gerard.
"Hmm?" I muttered.
"You up? Let's go get breakfast!" God, he sounded just like a child. Energetic and exited about life.
"Mhm. Just let me get ready."
I sighed. Turning over, I grabbed my suitcase by the bed. Upon opening it, I lazily pulled out the first garments I could find to make a full outfit. I slipped those on, along with my shoes. I grabbed my phone and wallet.
"Coming!" I shouted.
I headed for the door, and upon opening it, I saw Gerard standing there in the doorway. His eyes sparkled and his smile warmed my heart. Every second I looked at him my heart beat faster, and more butterflies filled my stomach.
"Hey," he greeted me. "You ready."
"Um, yeah," I managed.
"Well, come on, then," he smiled warmly.
He led me out to a small shiny black car. Gerard hopped in the front while I sat in the passenger's seat.
"Feel like any place in particular?" Gerard asked.
"Not really."
"Okay." he looked at me with a grin. "I know a place."
Gerard continued to drive. I began to stare at him again. I couldn't help it. It was as if it were an automatic function. A habit. This time he didn't notice me. Or so I thought. After a good five minutes, Gerard turned on the radio. I instantly noticed the song. It was one of Gerard Way's. Gerard scowled and changed the station. I looked at him with a quizzical expression. Gerard just shook his head.
"What's wrong with it?" I asked.
"I'm not really fond of hearing my own voice," he replied. "I'm sorry."
"Well, I think it sounds beautiful," I insisted. And with that, changed the station back. "After all, this song did make it on the radio. That's because it's amazing and people like it."
"You really think so?" Gerard asked.
"Would I be here if I didn't?" I replied.
"I guess not," Gerard said, as he looked down slightly.
He looked up again. "Oh, we're there!"
I looked out the window and saw a large building. Obviously a restaurant, but fancy. Really fancy.
"I thought we were just getting breakfast," I remarked.
"We are," Gerard replied with a casual tone.
He then parked the car and we both got out, heading straight inside.
We picked a seat and waited to take our orders.
"So, Gerard, why this place? I asked. Partly in attempt to make conversation, and also because I was genuinely curious.
Gerard took a deep breath before speaking. "I really like this place. And I thought I might show it to you."
I just stared at him. I became so hypnotized by his dark eyes that I just said nothing. I could tell he was looking into my eyes, too. It's just something you can feel. We sat, our eyes locked for a good ten seconds, before Gerard finally broke his stare. He cleared his throat and looked away.
"So, uh... where you from, kid?" Gerard asked, breaking the silence.
"New Jersey," I replied.
Gerard's eyes grew wide. "Aww, dude. I used to live in New Jersey as a kid!"
"Really?" I asked.
"Yeah! Aww, I actually really miss it." Gerard replied.
I laughed.
"What?" Gerard asked.
"New Jersey is a shithole. Excuse my language."
"It'll grow on ya. Trust me." Gerard assured me. "If only I could go back..." He trailed off.
Finally, a waiter came over to our table. "Can I get you guys anything?"
Gerard looked down at the menu. "I'll just have a salad and a glass of water."
I looked at him and furrowed my eyebrows.
"I need to watch my weight," he whispered.
I couldn't help but smile and shake my head. "No you don't," I mouthed.
Gerard looked down at his stomach and frowned.
I looked at the waiter. "I'll have the same," I requested. "Plus a coke."
"Okay, I'll have your orders ready in a minute." The waiter then walked away.
I giggled.
"What?" Gerard asked.
"You're such a girl," I replied.
"Yeah, I am?" Gerard laughed.
"Yeah."
After a few moments of silence, I spoke.
"Gerard, I've noticed something." I started.
"What's that?" Gerard asked.
"You're so... self conscious. Why can't you see that you are amazing?"
"Well, you see, that's because I'm not," he smiled, but I could see pain behind it.
"You're lying to yourself. All of these people love you. Why don't you love yourself?"
"My fans don't love me, they love my music," Gerard explained.
"I like you," I protested.
"You don't even know me," Gerard snapped. "If you really did, you'd know that I'm a screw up." he said quietly. "I don't even know why I'm discussing this with you. I'm sorry."
I sighed. "Well, I hope one day you'll see."
The waiter finally came with our salads and drinks.
"Thank you," Gerard and I said simultaneously.
"You're welcome," the waiter smiled before leaving.
"For the record, you're not fat," I mumbled.
Gerard just shot me a look. "Okay, whatever you say."
We continued to eat and chat for a while. I had such a great time. Gerard was a pretty chill guy. I felt really close to him even though we had just met.
Gerard waved his hand in the air, calling over a waiter. "Can I get the check, please?"
"Yeah, I'll have it in a minute."
"Kay, thanks." Gerard smiled.
The waiter came back within seconds with the check. 'That was fast,' I thought to myself.
I had begun to pull out my wallet, when Gerard stopped me.
"What?" I asked.
"I got it," he replied.
"You sure?" I asked. "Because I got the money."
"So do I. Please just let me get it."
"Okay, fine."
Gerard payed and we left.
"Where to next, Frank?"
