The Drums of the City Rain

Chapter 4

It was a long two weeks. With my mom getting ready to leave, and the contest notification I have been anticipating. I was nervous for both scenarios. I couldn't help but think. What if I did meet Gerard Way? What would I do? What would I say?
"Frankie?" my mom called from the living room.
"Yeah?" I asked in reply?
"Come here."
"Ah. Coming!"
I ran down the stairs and stopped in the living room.
"You needed me?"
"Yeah. Can you help me find my coat? I seem to have lost it."
"Sure," I agreed.
After a good five minutes of searching, I decided to go have a look in the coat closet. After opening the door, I lifted several fallen garments from the bottom.
"Ah!" I exclaimed.
"What?" Mom asked.
I lifted up her coat and grinned.
"Found it."
"Thank you, Frank."
"No problem."
"Listen, Frank. I need to finish packing, all right?"
"You need help?"
"I think you've helped me enough today. Thank you."
"Kay. I'll be in my room. Love you!"
"Love you too, Frankie."
I started up the stairs, but looked back at my mom. I sighed. I really didn't have much time with her left. I headed for my room, and upon opening my door, I had noticed my phone flashing on my bed. I ran over and opened it. I had an email. My heart jumped. 'Keep calm, Frank,' I told myself. I opened up the email. As I read, my eyes grew wide. My heart started beating faster. 'Well, shit,' I whispered under my breath. I had tried so very hard to keep from screaming. I snatched my phone and ran downstairs.
"Moooom!" I screamed the entire way down the stairs.
"What?" she turned away from the clothes she was packing.
I shoved my phone in front of her. "Look!"
"What's this?"
"I won."
"Won what?" she asked, obviously confused.
Then I realized that she had not known about the contest. As I began to explain, I could see a smile curl up on her face.
"Frankie, that's amazing!"
"I know!" I took another look down at my phone. "It says I have to print out some papers." I continued to read aloud. "A document of validation, a certificate of achievement, and a free plane ticket." My heart jumped at that last part. I just couldn't believe it. "Can I use your printer, mom?" I asked
"Of course," she replied.
"Thanks!" I continued. "I also have to bring my painting. Signed by me."
My mom's face grew bright. "Oh, Frankie! I'm so proud of you!" She began to bounce with happiness.
I smiled. That is, until I took another look at my phone. "Oh." I said softly.
My mom's smile dropped, as well. "What is it?"
"I have to leave for California in one week. You'll be gone," I explained.
"Oh, sweetie, I think you're old enough to go on your own. Here, I'll go get your passport for you." She then left for her room. I heard the opening of a drawer. Seconds later, she came back. "Here. I hope you have fun, sweetie."
I grinned widely, then sat my passport down on the coffee table. "Aw, thank you, mom!"
"No problem," she smiled. "After all, this is a once in a lifetime chance. I wouldn't want you to pass it up because of some silly business trip of mine."
"I love you so much, mom!"
"I love you, too."
"You need money?" Mom asked.
"I have my own," I insisted, pulling out my wallet for emphasis.
"Well, I want to help," she protested. "Here." She grabbed her purse and shuffled around it. She then stretched her hand out to mine and handed me a hundred dollar bill.
"Thanks, mom. You don't have to--"
"I wanted to," she cut me off. "I know it's not much, but it's the least I could do."
"No, mom it really is a lot to give. I really appreciate it. Thank you." I accepted the money and shoved it in my wallet.
My mom looked down at her watch. "Oh, I gotta go!" she exclaimed. She ran to the door. I followed. "Bye, Frankie. See you in two weeks."
"Bye, mom."
My mom gave me a warm hug. "Be safe," She said.
"I will," I replied.
Mom pulled away and ran for her car, turning around to wave goodbye. I waved back. I watched as she pulled out of the driveway. I sighed. An entire two weeks. To myself. I sat down on the couch. I pulled out my phone and smiled again. 'I really did it,' I said to myself. I went to go print off my papers.
