The Drums of the City Rain
Chapter 2
It was a beautiful Saturday morning, with golden-orange sunlight streaming through my window, hot coffee, and nothing to do. I sat in my room all morning, wasting time on the internet, as usual. After a few hours, I came across an ad with a picture of Gerard Way, so naturally, I took time to check it out. I clicked on it, and I was redirected to a different webpage. After reading it all, I almost screamed. Apparently, there was a contest being held. The prize? A once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet the Gerard Way. I clicked on the link at the bottom of the screen. A new page popped up, full of nothing but directions. I read through them. Apparently, I was supposed to create a piece of art for Gerard's next album. Now, I'm not the artistic type, but I thought I'd give it a try.
I headed downstairs and into the supply closet, where we kept all things not used very often. I retreated back into my room. I spent an hour or two sketching the outline. I was in there all day. I was pretty determined to win the prize. After a few more hours, I heard a soft knock at my door.
"Frank?" It was my mother.
"Yeah?" I replied.
"Come out. I haven't seen you all day."
"Sorry. I was busy." I hopped off of my bed and opened the door.
"You should really get out," she suggested. "C'mon, let's go get something to eat."
I looked back at the mess of pencils, paper, and paint scattered on my bed. I guess I could take a break. "Okay," I agreed.
I slipped on my black Converse and followed my mom downstairs. I loved my mom. Judge me if you will, but we were very close. I was all she had, after my dad left. After racing to the front door, I waited and watched as my mom grabbed her purse. I walked out to the car, and hopped in the passenger's seat. My mom followed. We headed to a fast food place. I simply ordered some fries and a drink. I wasn't too hungry. My mom and I chatted for a while. I missed our talks. We used to talk all of the time, but she got too busy with work and other priorities. I really enjoyed hanging out with my mom. I guess I'm a bit of a mama's boy, but I don't care.
"Frank?"
"Yeah, Mom?"
"Listen, okay? I have to go away for a while. I have an important business trip in two weeks. I will be gone for a week or two," she explained. "Do you think you'll be okay on your own?"
"Yeah, of course I will, mom. After all, I am seventeen. I can take care of myself."
She shot me a saddened look, and I instantly became confused. I guess she could see it on my face.
"It's just--I'm not used to leaving you alone. But then I remember, you're not my little baby anymore. You're almost eighteen and before I know it, you'll be moving out," her voice cracked. Tears started welling up in her eyes. "I love you, sweetie."
"Woah, Mom, where is this all coming from?" I became even more confused, if not concerned.
"I don't know," she replied. "I've just been thinking, that's all. You haven't been spending as much time with me, and I've been too busy. And now, well, now, you are almost done with high school, ready for college, and then--," She drifted off. "Well, then I won't be seeing much of you at all."
"I'm sorry, mom--"
"Don't be sorry, Frank," she cut me off. "It's not your fault you're growing up."
"I know, but," I trailed off. "How 'bout this? I'll spend all day with you. Better yet, all week. I know I haven't been spending as much time with you, so let me make it up to you."
"Aw, thank you, Frankie!" Mom smiled.
"I love you, mom. Don't forget that. Even if I do move away."
"I love you too, Frank."
