Iced Coffee

Chapter One: My Buddy Frank

I could smell the fresh ground coffee. I could hear the indistinct chatter fill the small shop. I could see the employees working behind the counter, wearing their blue aprons and visors. They filled the mugs and served them to the customers waiting in line.
I'd always gotten good vibes from the shop. Everyone was always happy. The sun shone through the big windows and warmed the building. And it always had the smell of fresh bagels and coffee grounds.
The workers were also extremely nice to me. Just because I came in everyday. Kathy would always greet me when I came in with a, "Morning Gee."
Then Josh would always take my order at the polished counter.
"Hey Gerard. You want your usual iced coffee?" He smiled."Yes, please." I smiled back.
He grabbed the insulated cup and poured the liquid into it as a tool out the five dollar bill from my wallet.
"How's your morning going?" He asked.
"It's going great. How 'bout yourself?" I placed the slightly crumpled bill on the counter.
"Good. I mean, I'd rather be at home, sleeping. But other than being tired and bored, I'm good." He said, handing me the cup. I chuckled.
"I wish I was asleep at home too. But someone's gotta put food on the table." I said, raising an eyebrow.
Josh leaned forward, resting his elbows on the gritty counter.
"I hear ya. I need to save up. Caitlyn's eating for two." He smiled brightly.
"She's pregnant?" I asked excitedly. "I'm so happy for you!"
"Thanks man." He laughed.
I nodded, taking a drink, leaving a delightful aftertaste in my mouth.
"Yeah, we've been trying for the past few months-"
He was interrupted by a young man bursting through the door, yelling, "Sorry I'm late! I accidentally slept in too late. I'm sorry, Josh."
He grabbed the extra blue apron hanging my the cash register, tying it around his waist as Josh replied dully, "It's okay, Frank."
"It's not okay. It's my first day!"
"I said it's okay. I'm just glad you showed up." Josh said.
Kathy walked over to the counter from the booths, cloth still in her hand.
"Frank. You're on table duty. Get cleaning." She said, throwing the rag at the boy who expertly caught it with his left hand.
"Thanks." The short boy ran over to the tables and started wiping them off.
"Who's that?" I asked, eyeing the boy curiously.
"That's my buddy, Frank. He was in some trouble with finances, so I told him I could get him a job here." He sighed. "It's his first day."
"And he was late." I added, receiving a nod from both of the employees.
"He's a good guy and all, but when it comes to working, he just can't get it down." Josh smiled.
I watched Frank frantically wipe down the tables, holding his head in his left hand and cleaning with the other. I took another sip of coffee and looked at my watch.

8:47am.

"Aw man, it's already eight forty-five. I have to get going." I said, making my way to the door.
"I'll see you around, Josh. You too, Kath. Bye." I waved as I rushed out the door. I looked at the boy through the big window in the front of the building, giving him a nod before I scurried to work.
