Let’s move on to present day. I’m 15, my name is Gerard and I only watch, play, or read things rated E for everyone, the only people I talk to are my parents, and I’ve never set one foot outside this house. My hero is the boy that lives in front of us; I want nothing more than to talk to him just once. But recently he’s been acting weird; he gets home later in a daze, and even has girls with him that don’t leave until the next morning. I wish I knew what they did all night. He just turned 17 yesterday; there was a huge party with all his college friends, loud music, apple-juice in glass bottles and a metal barrel thing, after drinking a lot they all became dizzy, dumb, and reckless. I guess that’s why I’m only allowed to drink it twice a month. After that a bunch of girls and boys began to put their mouths together that was actually really gross looking. My mom saw me and quickly pulled me away, that was exactly 14 hours ago it’s 2pm now.
My parents are at work right now they left at 5am. I haven’t talked to them today, but when they get home I know they’ll give me a lecture about the things I saw yesterday. I don’t want to go over it because all I’m going to do is ask ‘what they were doing’ and they’re going to say ‘something that you should never ever do’. They should be back by now, they must be buying food or clothes or shoes.
The boy that lives across the street from me, I want to talk to him.

‘Hello Gerard.’ Says the boy in my mind
“You know my name?” I say out loud
‘Of course I do, I’ve been watching you for almost 8 years now. Gerard, I think I love you.’
“I love you too.”

“Who are you talking to?” asked my mama looking at papa in this really weird way.
“Myself.”
“Oh, okay then,” They know I do this often so it’s not a big deal. She sat next to me on the couch wrapping her arms around me, meanwhile my dad pulled up a seat in front of us. “Gerard, baby, about the thing you saw, well in the future you might want to do that.”
“Which part are you talking about?”
“The part where they put their mouths together”
“It’s called kissing son and almost everyone does it at some point. Your mommy and I do it so just know it’s nothing bad as long as you do it with a girlfriend or boyfriend, if you’re into that stuff, you know someone you love.”
“Oh, so you want me to go find someone that I love?”
“Oh god no, honey you misunderstood, they have to find you. If they love you enough they will find you and wait for you until we say it’s okay.”
“I understand now.” I smiled at her with genuine happiness, this is the first time they’ve discussed something like this with me. Such a grown up topic, maybe he’ll be the one to come for me.
5 pm every now and then I get the idea of going outside, just the yard, no big deal. I think the earlier conversation gave me the idea this time.
“Gerard how was your day?”
“Boring, just like every other day.” My mama and papa shared a worried look “May I go outside today, just once in the front yard. Please.”
My mama got upset; she stood up and began pacing. “I knew it. I knew we shouldn’t have talked to him about that nonsense!”
“No mama, just forget it I don’t have to go outside. I’ll stay here with you and papa and we can just play a game.”
“No Gerard it’s okay. Sweetie how about we let him out, we have chains in the basement so how about we just attach him to the porch. That way he can only get as far as the fence and no one can take him and run off. Oh, and we’ll watch him from the window.”
“No…just no.” my mama was in tears, but my papa insisted and she finally gave in. not really that’s just wishful thinking. My mama won as always “Gerard, go to your room.” Says my mama
“Okay mama.” I said walking upstairs. I began to read an Arthur book I’d like to watch the cartoon at least then it could block out any other noises. Like right now I can hear mama yelling at my papa and him yelling at her then when they’re done they’re going to come here and yell at me for starting their fight. I love my parents, but sometimes I wish they’d just disappear without locking me in first.
