Daycare Adventures

Blue

"Mommy, do we have to go?"

Mrs. Way sighs as she drives her kids to Mrs. Ballato's house. She had already answer that question many times, though she still felt guilty, this was their only option. Mrs. Way and her husband didn't know what else to do but she didn't want her kids to be miserable. She looks to her oldest, Gerard, who is staring out the window, fiddling with his thumbs nervously. Although she has no doubt that Gerard will make friends quickly, it was her youngest, Mikey who sat in his car seat beside Gerard, that worries her the most as she looks at him though the rearview mirror.
Mikey sniffles while trying to hold back tears, keeping his promise to his grandma that he'd be a good boy. He already knew that answer to his question earlier and did not ask again. He clutches his toy shark, Blue, his grandma got him for Christmas. Ever since she passed, Mikey carries Blue everywhere with him. This is why they have to go to daycare.
Mrs. Way remembers Christmas morning when Mikey first opened his present, revealing a shark plush that he later named, Blue. She hadn't liked it at first, since the toy represented the shark from Jaws, which Mikey wasn't supposed to have watched but she can remember her mother's words in her head.
"Oh, Donna. Don't worry about him. Your kids have Way blood in them. They're tough. These kids were made to change the world and not some scary movie is gong to stop them."
She smiles at the memory. It's been six months and the whole family missed grandma Way so much. Both of her boys were very close to their grandma. She would watch them in the summer while their parents would go to work. It was hard on them when they found out they would no longer be going to their grandma's during the summer. It was what they were used to but now they have to go somewhere completely different.
Mrs. Ballato knew grandma Way and were very good friends despite the age gap. When Mrs. Ballato heard the tragic news, she immediately offered to help out and gave the Way's a discount. There was no other place Gerard and Mikey could go, so they accepted the kind offer and were very grateful.
Mrs. Ballato is a very nice middle aged woman and lives in a nice neighborhood. She runs a private daycare at her house. During the summer she watches kids up to age eleven. She also has a daughter, Lyn-z who is sixteen and helps out with watching the kids along with her friends that offer to help out and work at the daycare, sometimes taking the kids on fun little field trips. Mrs. Way was also pleased to hear they all took classes at the Red Cross where they learned how to take care of children and perform CPR.
Mrs. Way has a good feeling about this daycare, knowing her kids won't be sat in front of a tv all day and eat junk food. She feels like her kids will be in good hands. Hopefully.
Geard knew that his mother was worrying about him and his brother. He had also made a promise to his grandmother. Her promised her that he would look after his little brother. He remembered how she told him that Mikey was his brother no matter what and that he wouldn't get another one. He looked to his left at Mikey. He will keep that promise. He will never let anything bad happen to Mikey. Because a promise is a promise and was something that should never be broken.
He reaches over and grabs Mikey's hand. Mikey looks at Gerard, his eyes still a little puffy and red.
"It's gonna be okay, Mikey. I won't leave you alone. I promise."
Mrs. Way relaxes a little and smiles while she glances behind her. Everything will be fine.
