The Way I can Tell
Goodbye, My Dearest Boy In Blue
I don't know why they let me, but the let me free, they let me escape.
And on instinct I ran to my boy, I ran to Frank. I ran as fast as I could.
Out of the court house, down the street, over four maybe five bridges, through three parks, two cemeteries and god knows what else. I don't know how I knew that I was headed to the hospital, I just knew. I didn't know how I didn't run out of breath, but I didn't. All I know is something was terribly wrong with Frank. Something was wrong.
Up the hills, j-walking in the streets, down the hills and finally to the hospital doors. I ran inside calling for Frank. I didn't have time for an elevator, i ran up the stairs.
I got to his room and opened the door.
"Frank?" I whispered softly.
Frank opened his paper thin eyelids on sunken eyes. The intense hazel they were before was no longer existent, but his eyes were a dim brown orb. His skin was so pale and thin I could see every little capillary, every artery, and every vein under it.
"Hey Gerard." He said with such effort it hurt to hear. He coughed a hard wet cough.
"Whats going on? How are you?" I asked trying to keep the tone light. He was dying and I knew it.
Instead of answering he looked at me taking in my every detail. I squeezed his hand softly. HIs eyes dimmed further.
"Frank, baby, you'll be okay." I said forcing a smile.
He laughed weakly. "I don't have a long time left."
"Oh no, no don't say that. You'll get better and you and I will have a long happy life together. We can go where ever you want to go, I promise. We can go anywhere, do anything!"
"Gerard I-" He coughed again. "I love you. Give me, please, one last kiss?"
"I can't because it wont be our last one. Frank you'll get better! You have to!"
He coughed again and I leaned in. Urgently, frantically, I met my lips with his and kissed him softly.
And that was it, his eyes were completely dim. I thought I saw a flicker of life for a moment, but only for a moment and then it was gone.
