The Way I can Tell
Trial and Error
The day of my trail was very, very, odd. It started out with a visit from Bob.
"Morning Mr. Way. Today is the big day, you gonna get hung or are you going to be set free. Today we'll know I guess." Was how he greeted me.
"Good to see you too, Bob." I replied sarcastically.
He smiled. "There's the Gerard I know. How's it going for ya mister?"
"Could be a bit better, I guess. I actually feel sick to my stomach."
"He nods, well when your facing a possible death sentence, that'll happen to ya. Maybe you should practice your remorse, that regret thing that'll setcha free."
"Why are you talking like that?"
"Just thought I'd try it out, you don't think it works?"
"Not really."
He smiled and got up. "See you in the trial."
And he left.
The trial its self was weird, too. I was sitting with Mr. Iero at our table, behind us was an audience. The audience had Mikey's "family", my co-workers, my boss and various other people who were probably just here to see my sentencing. The one audience member that creeped the fuck out of me was death again. This time the skeleton-girl thing wore a casual dress and her scythe was gone, instead had an hour glass in her hands. She tapped it three times and watched the sand fall. She was telling me time was up. But for who, I couldn't tell at the moment.
"All rise for the honorable Judge Wentz." I heard Bob say.
On instinct almost, I rose to my feet my shackles weighing heavily on my arms and legs.
For the most part the trial went uneventful, but then Mr. Iero got a phone call.
After he hung up he and Bob worked to undo my shackles. At first I was confused but Bob whispered to me.
"Run Gerard"
And then I wasn't myself anymore , and I ran to the hospital.
I understood what Death meant.
