Love and Guns
Way Co. #5
Frank and Mikey stared at eachother for a while. Mikey immediately knew who he was, too. You don’t forget a face like that.
Frank almost died of shock when Mikey extended his arm out toward him and said “Nice to meet you, Frank. Gerard has said a lot of kind things about you.”
Frank could tell Mikey recognized him, so he was confused when he said that to him. He, however, was in no place to turn it down, to he gingerly shook the other boy’s hand.
“Well, I don’t know about you two, but I’m starving. We should go see if the cook has finished dinner.” Gerard said, breaking the short silence.
The boys followed Gerard down the hall, and into the elevator, where they stood quietly as Gerard went on and on about a comic he had picked up earlier that day.
Finally the doors opened, and they were in the kitchen. There was a small woman with dark red hair and an apron on in the middle of the room, leaning over a tall pot of something. “Boys, your food is outside on the patio table.” Gerard thanked her, and led Frank and Mikey to the large glass door. He pulled it open, and stepped outside, and Frank followed. He marveled at their large backyard. There was a large pool in the center of it, a juice bar, and a golf course that stretched on for miles. Gerard sat down at a long glass table, and Frank sat next to him. Gerard picked up his hamburger and Frank looked down at his. “Don’t worry, it’s a veggie burger.” Gerard whispered to him. Frank smiled and took a bite.
Mikey quietly sat across the table from them, eating his food, his eyes never leaving Frank.
After a few minutes, the glass door opened, and a man in a dark suit with graying hair stepped out and gave them all a tight smile. “Hello Gerard, Mikey.” Then his eyes fell onto Frank. “You must be Frank, it’s nice to meet you. I’m their father, but you can just call me Don.” Frank stood up and shook the man’s hand and giving him his award winning smile.
Don sat down next to Mikey, and began eating his food. After a while, Gerard began talking about his comic again. While Gerard was talking, Frank noticed Mikey lean in and whisper something to his father. Frank heart began pounding like crazy, so he tried to just focus on Gerard and how amazing he looked, even while he was talking about something that Frank couldn’t care less about. His black hair would sway into his face, and he would use the palm of his hand to move it away instead of his fingers, and he would speak out of the side of his little mouth, exposing those tiny square teeth. Frank was absolutely mesmerized by Gerard. He truly was beautiful.
After he had concluded his long speech about his comic that no one was really listening to, Don piped up and asked Frank something that made his sweat run cold.
“So, Frank. What do you do for a living?” Frank’s eyes met Don’s. His eyes were cold and unforgiving. Mikey had definitely told him, and Frank knew it. He could tell by the way Don was watching his every move.
“I work in the family business.” He said quietly, trying to not reveal too much. “And what’s the family business?” He asked, leaning forward intently. Frank panicked. “Cabinets. We uh, make and sell cabinets.” He stuttered out.
“Is that so?” Don said cooly. “Yes sir.”
“Well, perhaps if you guys make good...cabinets. I’ll have to stop into your shop and purchase some.” He said in a low voice.
Frank’s heart was prepared to beat right out of his chest. He glanced at his phone. “Oh, well it’s getting pretty late. I think I should head out.” Frank said quickly. Don sat back in his chair and crossed his arms. “Yeah, you have plenty of cabinets you have to make, right Frank?” Frank nodded his head. “I sure do.”
Frank stood up out of his chair and gave Don and Mikey a small wave. “It was nice meeting you both.” They just nodded and watched him.
Gerard stood up and walked him to his car. Once they were in the driveway, Gerard smiled at him. “I’m sorry if my dad was a little uh, intimidating. He gets like that sometimes. I didn’t know he was going to be joining us.” He rushed out.
Frank turned and gave him a small smile, then leaned in and connected their lips in a passionate kiss. He tangled his hands into Gerard’s smooth black hair, and slipped his tongue into his mouth, as if he needed Gerard to breathe. After a while, he pulled away.
Gerard looked taken back. “Wow, Frankie. What was that?” As much as it absolutely pained him to say it, he knew he had to. He couldn’t stick around if Gerard’s family knew who he was.
“It was a goodbye, Gerard.”
