Chapter 2

2005

Frank was hanging out with his friends on this huge field. They would come here very often to practice lacrosse or just to hang out and escape from real life.

Today they were here because school would start in a week and that meant that lacrosse training would start in a week as well. And of course they HAD TO get on the team or they would be screwed.

Frank passed the ball to Josh who would run for his life and aimed for the goal. He easily scored. Which wasn’t that hard for him because he was clearly the best player the school had and because Tyler, who was trying to be useful as a keeper, kept ducking every time the ball came near him.

“Yo Ty! You’re supposed to keep us from scoring and not help us!” Frank shouted at the poor boy who had only agreed to playing because his best friend had somehow convinced him to do this.

“Uh, yeah, I noticed” Tyler shouted back while walking over to the other boys. “Maybe someone else can be the keeper now?”

Not even a second after that was said, a big, ugly silver van came heading their way. Ray’s van. He stopped the van a few feet from the “lacrosse field” they’d created and got out of the huge vehicle.

“Hey guys! Is it okay if I brought some others?” Everyone just kind of nodded in unison because Ray would do this a lot. He’s a really easy guy and everyone likes him. So him taking new people to the field wasn’t a new thing.

Three other guys got out of the van. A small one with black hair who couldn’t be older than 15 and two rough-looking but definitely underage guys with loads of tattoos.

They all got their sticks out and walked over to the other three. Everyone was now just standing there, waiting awkwardly until Ray would introduce them to each other.

“Oh yeah, right” Ray mumbled to himself after a good minute. He ran over to his friends and began introducing them to each other.

The small one was called Pete, he only came along because Ray had promised his girlfriend Hayley that he would look after her little brother while she was at a friend’s birthday party. And according to Ray, Pete was a really good lacrosse player. But as the only one who didn’t actually play, he wouldn’t know.

The two tattooed guys are Andy and Joe. They were stepbrothers and just moved here. And it turned out that they were gonna go to the same school as the others.

Andy volunteered to be goalie because at his old school he was the best keeper they’d ever had. And he rarely let any balls through.

For two hours straight the boys would take turns and try to score. But Andy was so good that they just couldn’t get through. “Dude, you should really become a professional” “ I’m sure there’s a GOOD team out there that would want to work with you” that’s the stuff that the boys would say to Andy. And Andy in return would blush and brush off all the compliments he would get.

The boys weren’t even playing lacrosse anymore and they were just trying to throw as hard as they could. Most of the balls missed the goal big time and every time that happened Ray would jump in and return the ball as if he was a dog.

As it got later the boys got crazier: balls were being thrown against trees and some disappeared in the forest. At this point Ray had stopped running after the balls for them. They were Frank’s after all. So it would be his problem eventually.

When it started to get dark outside, everyone decided to go to the pizza place downtown together but Frank decided to stay behind for a bit.

“Guys you go ahead and order me one, take the van. I’m gonna search for some of the balls that I PAID FOR”

Even though he said it so sarcastic everyone just agreed to go. It wasn’t dark yet and it wouldn’t take too long to collect all of the balls so they got in Ray’s van and left.

Frank counted the balls and found 18. Just two to go. They couldn’t be far from where he was currently standing but the field was all clear so they must’ve been somewhere in the woods. When he reached the edge of the forest he quickly saw both of the balls. One a few feet further than the other. He didn’t make a big deal out of it and grabbed both of them off the ground.

Just as he was about to turn around to head to the pizza place he thought he saw someone. No, he didn’t even think he saw someone. He was sure of it. There was someone behind that tree. He KNEW it. So Frank being Frank he slowly walked over there while trying to communicate with whoever was hiding themself from him.

“ Hey?”

*step*

“I know you’re there.”

*step step step*

“Please come out.”

*step step*

“You don’t have to be scared.”

*step*

Frank was only a few feet away from the tree now, and slowly walked around it only to find the most terrified-looking boy ever. He didn’t look much older than Frank himself so it kind of hit Frank that he had just found this boy in the fucking woods. And by the looks of it he’d been here for quite a long time.

The boy had black hair that had gone way below his shoulders. His trousers were ripped and his shirt was actually covered in blood. As was his face. The boy was covered in scratches and bruises. This shocked Frank, this boy must’ve been here for at least a few weeks, and he looked so young and scared!

“Hey, are you okay?” Frank spoke in a soft and tender voice, trying not to scare the boy more. But he just kept looking at Frank. As if he waited for Frank to make any sudden movements.
Frank tried again. “Would you tell me if you were okay if I promised you that I’d never hurt you?” The boy looked a little more relaxed but still really fucking scared.

“i-I got s-scared” there barely came any sound from the boy’s lips but Frank could hear those three words very clear. A few tears escaped from the boy’s eyes and Frank really wanted to comfort him but it was best that he wouldn’t come close to the boy just yet.

“Why don’t you tell me where you live and then I’ll take you home” Frank suggested. The boy nodded and instead of giving him directions he asked Frank if he would follow him in a tone that wasn’t louder than the softest whisper.

After walking for about 5 minutes the boy turned around. “Maybe you should go back now, it is not really save here.”

Frank was kind of surprised that the boy spoke a whole sentence without stuttering. It was clear and loud enough for anyone around to hear. Frank, of course, refused to leave and followed the boy until a small, wooden, cabin came in sight. The cabin was built between two fallen trees and if you didn’t look good, you wouldn’t even notice it.

The boy stopped in front of the, what you would call “door” of the cabin. Which was just some sort of plastic curtain. “this is where I live” the boy said, somewhat unsure for some reason. He still didn’t trust the guy that ‘found’ him at all.

Frank was even more shocked now. He had found a boy, okay. He found a boy in the woods. The boy was about his age and he had been living on his own. He had been living on his own in the woods for God knows how long.

“How long have you been living here?” Frank couldn’t help but ask.

The boy looked puzzled, as if he was counting the years in his head.

“I can’t remember” he finally answered. “I just woke up in this shed one day.”

The boy sat down on a branch of one of the trees and sighed.

Frank waited for a minute, he had made a decision but he wasn’t entirely sure if it was actually a good idea. But for the sake of the boy he would do it. Frank kneeled down so he was at the same level as the boy.

“okay listen” Frank started. “I need you to come with me. I won’t hurt you or anything but even though I don’t know you, I don’t want you to live in the woods when you can live in an actual house.”

The boy still seemed kind of unsure. But living in a house sounded so nice. And the guy who wanted him to come with me sounded so nice as well. And if he would be really honest, he’d rather do anything than live in these woods for another day.

The boy nodded but before Frank had the chance to stand up, the boy had pulled him back down.

“wait” he said “I need you to pinky-promise”

He held out his pinky and waited for Frank to do the same.

Frank gladly held out his pinky as well and the boy promised that he would come with Frank and Frank promised him that he’d never hurt him.

After the boy had grabbed his “stuff” from the cabin, which wasn’t that much, just a half-empty bag, both of the boys walked to the car.

The boy gasped at the sight of Frank’s car. Which was weird for Frank, because he just had a normal, black, Volkswagen Polo. It wasn’t a ‘nice’ or ‘shocking’ car. But the boy had been telling him about how it was the nicest car he’d ever seen.

Not two minutes after Frank had started the car, the boy had fallen asleep. And Frank took this opportunity to call his friends. He stopped the car at the side of the road and dialed Ray’s number.

“What’s up Frank? On your way yet?”

“I’m sorry man, I’m not gonna make it, my dad wants me home” he used as an excuse.

“oh man, that sucks.” Ray told him, totally aware of what Frank’s father could be like if he’d had a drink too much. “stay strong Frankie”

“I will, bye”

Frank threw his phone on the back seat and took a quick look at the boy next to him, who was sleeping as if the chair was the most comfortable thing ever and then continued his way home.
