Chapter 1
1707
Gerard ran, he ran as fast as he could and as far as his legs would take him. He didn’t look back but he could still hear their screams. They probably didn’t even notice him leaving the house and smashing the door as hard as he possibly could. But that’s how it always went. And the worst thing about it was, it was all his fault, wasn’t it?
Every time he would make a slight change in his clothing or even showed them something he painted or something he carved in a piece of wood that he found in the forest his parents would go mad and blame each other for the way Gerard was raised. His creativity was not welcome at all in this family. The only people he could show his art to were his little brother and his grandmother. Mainly because Mikey looked up to Gerard and because his grandma thought him some of this art stuff. But his parents were different: they would end up screaming and throwing everything they could at each other. Mostly potatoes, because they could break a thing or two and you could literally find them everywhere in their house. It was because of him that they fought, right? If he’d just be a normal kid… But no, of course he had to be the family-freak.
Gerard’s family was a family of peasants, and a big one too. They owned a lot of ground and they grew potatoes and corn. Gerard and his little brother worked on the land, it was their job to check if the potatoes and corn were ready for harvest. Gerard and his brother Mikey cared for each other, Gerard basically raised his brother because for some reason their parents would be too ‘busy’ to raise a child. And Mikey tried to look after Gerard as well. If only Gerard would listen to his brother this one time.
Gerard kept running and he could hear his brother following him like he always did and kept shouting at Gerard to come back or wait up for him. Gerard of course kept running, knowing he was faster than Mikey and having done it before. He was now halfway through the cornfield. And on the other side was a big forest where he’d build a small shed in between two huge fallen trees. He made it specially for moments like this. There was even a blanket In there so he wouldn’t get too cold overnight.
He had been running for a while by now, almost half an hour he guessed. So he should be close to the forest. He stopped running for a bit to catch his breath. He’d never been able to run this long without stopping so this must be his new personal record. Just as he was about to start running again he heard a sound, right beside him. This was exactly the sound his feet had made while running through the cornfield so he got kind of scared. He knew that the most stupid thing to do right now was to ask if there really was someone there. So instead he sprinted to the end of the cornfield. But he was right his footsteps clearly weren’t the only ones he could hear. There were at least two others following him. And it sounded like they were getting closer.
Gerard’s adrenaline kicked in and he managed to reach the end of the cornfield and the edge of the forest. He looked over his shoulder while running and he probably shouldn’t have done that. He saw three figures, and the one closest to him seemed less than 5 feet away. He tried to run harder but it was already too late.
Gerard got jumped by the figure, and immediately felt the worst stinging pain he’d ever felt. Then the figure was suddenly gone. He was standing with the others now and made eye-contact with Gerard for a split second before disappearing into the woods.
Purple? His eyes were clearly purple. But that can’t be possible right? Gerard just blamed the stinging pain for losing his mind and seeing things. How could he have seen the color of the guy’s eyes anyways? It was getting dark now so that would be impossible. The pain in his neck kept getting worse and Gerard reached up to feel, only to notice his neck was actually bleeding. And not a little bit too. He could feel the blood flow down his shirt.
Knowing his small shed wasn’t too far from here he just half walked half crawled over there. But when he finally got inside he blacked out on the way-too-small-blanket.
