Go With Me
Chapter 5
They only stopped when they were completely out of breath and were completely sure no one was following them.
“I wanna go home! I have enough of this bullshit!” said Ray, collapsing down in to the grass and taking off his hoodie. He was completely sweaty. Small drops of sweat were forming on his forehead and shoulders.
“You want to go past the witch?” asked Mikey, nodded down towards the hill. The only thing that they could see from the top of the hill, was the roof of the old house.
“You’re not getting me back down there” Mikey said, removing his hoodie as well. He put it away in his backpack, sitting down next to Ray and taking out a big bottle of Coke, taking a few sips from it.
“Anyone?” he asked.
The other three shook their heads. They were all sweating through their cloths and the scolding sun wasn’t helping on bit.
“There must be another way, right?” Ray gave Gerard a questioning look. Frank and Mikey looked to Gerard as well, but he just stared blankly in front of himself.
“Right?!” repeated Ray
“Well... I’m afraid there isn’t” Gerard then finally said, his voice small and quiet.
“Just great!” Ray sighed: “Thanks for everything, idiot!”
No one said anything for a couple of seconds, before Frank broke the silence.
“What? It’s just an old lady” he said: “We shouldn’t have startled her. We scared her, that’s all”
“We scared her?” questioned Mikey.
“Frank’s right” said Gerard: “We’ll sneak past her, quietly and quickly. She just got scared of us. I mean, how would you feel if someone took pictures of you, like you were some kind of zoo animal?”
Gerard was actually very much relived that there was just an old lady living there.
“I didn’t take pictures of anyone” said Mikey, thinking the question was meant for him.
“You can tell her on the way back” said Frank:”Let’s just get to those caves”
The three boys watched Frank standing on the top of the hill, looking further out, where their path will soon lead them. Ray was frowning.
“Ray” said Frank, kneeling down to the curly haired boy: “Come on, we didn’t come this far for nothing, now did we?”
Ray looked at Frank, then at the ground and again at Frank, and again at the ground.
“Is it far? My feet are killing me” asked Ray.
“No” Gerard shook his head: “Over those woods, there’s another farm and after that is my granddad’s farm”
“Another ghost house?” sarcastically asked Mikey.
“Stop bullshitting Mikes” said Frank.
“They’re normal... I mean, granddad was friends with them. They’re nice people. We knew each other” explained Gerard. There was silence for a couple of seconds, before Frank spoke again.
“Ray?” he asked.
“Yeah... What?”
“Ray!?”
They were all watching Ray.
“Fine” he said after a while: “But only if it’s not far”
“It’s not” assured him Gerard: “And you really have to see this. You won’t be sorry”
Ray looked the way Frank was pointing to earlier, then back down the hill where they came from, seeing the roof of Agatha’s home.
“Do I have anything else left?” he asked, shivering.
“That’s the spirit” smiled Frank, handing him his hand, to help him get up: “Let’s go!”
Ray stood up, tying his hoodie around his waist, Mikey following her example and they continued their way. They soon reached a small path, which led them right beside the forest, the tall tree throwing a cooling shade over their heads. Gerard and Frank were walking up front, with Mikey behind them and a few steps after him was Ray. Frank didn’t really want to leave Ray alone, drawing even more suspicion from Ray by walking with Gerard. He wanted to make sure Gerard was okay, not just because of the scare the old lady gave them, but also about Mikey and Ray’s never ending whining and the thing that happened in school, but he still felt bad about Ray. Truth be told, Frank and Ray have been together for the past two weeks and Frank didn’t have the heart to tell Gerard. So they kept everything secret and Ray of course not agreeing with Frank, and taking every moment he could to show they were together. Frank like Ray, but it only stayed at liking. Gerard was the one he loves.
“Gee, you okay?” Frank asked Gerard, his hand twitching to reach for Gerard’s free one.
“Yeah, fine” said Gerard through his teeth.
“Dude, come on. It’s me” said Frank.
“I know. And really, I’m fine. Completely and utterly fine”
Again, the truth was, that Gerard absolutely wasn’t fine. Besides the stuff in school, he wasn’t quite okay with Ray like Frankie, his Frankie, and he had grown a suspicion that there was something more between them then just flirting. Of course he didn’t say anything to Frank, not wanting to look stupid.
“Okay, now I know you’re not” retorted Frank, seeing right through Gerard’s ‘I don’t give a fuck’ facade.
“It’s just...” Gerard thought for a moment, then decided against telling Frank the truth:”... The thing with the phone is really stressing me up, that’s all. And Mikey and Ray whining the whole time doesn’t really help, ya know”
Gerard shrugged, trying to go along with his words.
“Yeah, I know. That sucks” said Frank, giving his best friend a sympathetic look. Gerard returned the smile, completely forgetting his suspicions when he saw Frank’s smile. His smile had the power to drive away all Gerard’s worries.
“Hey, Gee” Mikey interrupted Gerard’s thoughts: “That woman down there, was she that...?”
“Yeah... Agatha” Gerard finished Mikey’s sentence.
“I really didn’t think she was still alive”
“You really think she’s alive?” smirked Mikey: “She looked more like a mummy to me”
Gerard stayed quiet. He started walking faster, in hope of leaving his little brother behind just enough so he didn’t have to talk to him, or listen to Ray whining. But Mikey kept his step with him.
“Who takes care of her? I mean, she can’t take care of herself, can she?” Mikey continued to think out loud, completely missing Gerard’s annoyed expression. Gerard speeded up again, Mikey now practically running beside him.
“Ha ha” Mikey laughed: “Maybe that demented son of hers came back from the asylum and he’s taking care of her”
Gerard stopped in his place, so mad that he closed his eyes to compose himself, before he turned to his brown hair, glasses wearing younger brother, barely recognising his own voice when he spoke.
“Mikey...” he said, hissing through his clenched teeth: “Fucking stop it! Stop fucking yapping all the bloody time! And... And you just had to go tap on that fucking window before, right?! You just freaking had to! Do you really have to cause so much shit everywhere you go?!”
Mikey stared at his older brother, eyes wide and mouth wide open. Gerard almost never yelled at him, so he knew that he had really over stepped the line. But he didn’t want to take Gerard’s bullshit and he felt kind of gutsy, which for him wasn’t unusual.
“Yeah, look who’s talking...” Mikey mumbled, meaning the whole thing in school, for which he felt bad, because he was just as much involved as Gerard.
“Mikes, don’t push it!” Gerard hissed, taking a threatening step towards his brother.
“What’s going on with you two?” asked Ray, when he finally caught up with the rest. Gerard looked at Ray, then his brother, and then his eyes met Frank’s beautiful brown eyes. If it weren’t for those eyes, Gerard would have probably unleashed his anger on to Ray. How dare he have a fucking crush on the guy he loves!?
He turned around and started walking again, trying to calm himself down. He heard Mikey whisper: “I didn’t even tap on the window... What’s his problem?”
Gerard chose to ignore the comment. The rest followed him soon enough, with Frank by his side again, which made Gerard feel a little better. And this time Mikey stayed quiet. Even Ray was quiet, so Gerard looked back to see what was going on. Ray had fallen behind quite a bit, playing around with his phone.
Gerard shrugged, turning to Frank who was still looking at him.
“What?” Gerard asked, his lips curving in to a half smile.
“It’s nothing, just... Why are you so pissed at Mikey, he’s just being... Well, Mikey” Frank said.
“I know. But he gets on my nerves, you know” Gerard shrugged, knowing Frank would understand him, because he too had a younger brother, the only difference was that Frank’s brother was seven and a lot more tolerable.
As they were walking, right there on that path by the forest, when the noise started to emerge from one of the bushes in front of them. Gerard stopped in his place, fearing the worst to come out of that bush, but all there was, was a light brown rabbit, it’s fur soft and silky.
“Oh my god! A rabbit! Frank, look it’s a rabbit!” Ray excitedly shrieked, pointing at the furry animal that was now running up the hill, further in to the forest, getting lost in the wilderness. Gerard’s heart pounded and he thought it might fall out of his chest. The rabbit scared the living shit out of him.
“Are there any bears in these woods?” asked Ray, finally reaching the rest of them, stepping right next to Frank.
“No” said Gerard through his teeth, convincing himself not to push Ray away from his Frankie.
“Guys! Cherry tree!” shouted Frank, pointing in the way the rabbit ran just a moment later. And he was right. On top of the hill was indeed a cherry tree with numerous blood red fruit hanging from its branches.
“They’re still green” mumbled Gerard.
“They’re red” retorted Ray and started running up the hill. Mikey and Frank followed him, leaving Gerard at the bottom, watching them.
“You’re gonna be sick if you eat unripe fruit!” Gerard shouted to them, a small smile appearing on his face nonetheless, seeing how cheerful Frank was.
“But it’s ripe!” Frank yelled back, reaching for the closest branches.
Gerard looked around, his eyes combing through the forest. He had this weird feeling, like they were being watched. He nervously stepped around, feeling restless.
“Fine then” he mumbled to himself, then joined the others. Frank was already climbing up the first branches.
“Please, just don’t break the branches, Frankie” Gerard said, smiling up at his best friend. He looked around himself again, unable to shake that unpleasant feeling.
“And hurry up, otherwise we won’t get anywhere” he added, sitting down beneath the tree, having clear view of Frank’s perfect ass. While Frank climbed the tree, throwing the red cherries down to Ray, who was catching them in his hoodie, Mikey, being the tall lazy human being that he was, was only reached up to one branch and pulled it down so he could stuff his face with the fruit. When Ray’s hoodie was full enough, Frank climbed down the tree, jumping down next to Gerard. As his feet hit the ground, he couldn’t keep his balance, so Frank tripped over, rolling down the hill.
“Gee, come on!” Frank giggled, his voice unclear while he was still rolling down the tall grass. Gerard laughed, rolling on to his side and letting gravity do the rest; take him down to his Frankie. The two boys rolling down the hill, hit together at the bottom, their heads so close, like that night they almost kissed. They laughed, just lying together in that tall grass that hid them away from sight of the other two. It was their moment, only theirs. And they both knew it.
‘This is the moment!’ Frank thought to himself, as he watched his best friend, his love, that gorgeous smile of his: ‘I’m going to tell him how I feel. Now!’
“Hey, Gee?” Frank called the black haired boy.
“Yeah?” Gerard stopped laughing, but didn’t stop smiling, looking straight in to Frank’s dark hazel eyes.
“There’s something... Errrm.. That I need to tell you” he stuttered out, trying to have the actual guts to speak those words.
“Yeah, okay” Gerard said, sensing there was something big on Frank’s mind, like he wanted to unburden himself.
“I’ve wanted to tell you this for so long... I lo-“
“Come on you idiots we need to get going” Ray interrupted Frank, stopping by the two boys with Mikey by his side.
“Eeh... Yeah, of course” stuttered Frank, still keeping his eyes on Gerard’s smiling face.
“I hope no one saw us” Mikey mumbled, peeking Gerard’s attention, even though he so wanted to hear what Frank had to tell him.
“Yeah, I hope so too. You know, granddad once chased a couple of kids with an axe, just because they stole some plums from him” Gerard said, standing up and helping Frank up as well.
“Plums, gross!” frowned Ray.
“He made jam and schnapps from them” said Gerard: “Mostly schnapps”
“Then it’s completely understandable that he chased them with an axe” smiled Frank and the two began laughing and only they found it funny.
They continued their path, soon going down the hill again and Gerard clearly remembered where they need to go. He was walking alone now, with the other three eating cherries behind his back.
“Hey, Gee, you want one?” asked Ray, handing him a fistful.
“They’re not ripe” retorted Gerard.
“Of course they’re ripe! Just look” said Mikey, stuffing himself with the fruit, looking like a chipmunk.
Gerard just waved his hand, dismissing Mikey. Even though he knew where they were going, he still noticed how much things had changes. He still knew that just after they get around this next hill, there’s going to be a farm. The Morgan’s farm. The old man that owned that farm, John was his name, John Morgan. Him and his grandfather were good friend, they would do to Sunday church together and after to the bar. John’s wife, one gave his grandfather a post card, so he could read it, because she couldn’t and it always amazed Gerard that there was actually someone in these times that didn’t know how to read. The Morgan’s had one daughter and two sons. The sons, being the eldest, were sent off to school and were now pretty successful businessmen, while the daughter stayed home. She was about Gerard’s age. Her name was Beth and while Gerard visited his grandfather, they would play together and she was the only one Gerard told about his love for Frank. Beth kept the secret. Of course it wasn’t like she could tell anyone, but still, Gerard was glad about that.
“Gee, come on, relax a little. We came here to have fun” a voice snapped Gerard out of his memories. Frank put his hand on Gerard’s shoulder, sending an electrical wave through Gerard’s body.
“It’s actually a nice trip” he said.
“It is, I was just remembering some stuff, that’s all” shrugged Gerard, happy that Frank was now walking by his side.
“It must off really been nice coming here” Frank smiled.
“Mhm, and you know you could have come with me” Gerard said.
“I know, I know... And I really regret not going” said Frank, being completely honest. He truly wanted to join Gerard whenever he went to his grandfather. And the only time he was actually able to go, he just had to break his leg, when Gerard and he were exploring one of the abandoned buildings.
Frank knew that he would tell Gerard about his feelings on this trip. He knew he would dump Ray if Gerard felt the same. Gerard is everything, and he deserves everything.
Those were Frank’s thought just as they were entering another patch of the forest, shadows of the trees falling over their heads.
‘It’s now or never Iero!’ Frnka gave himself a pep-talk: ‘This trip is your last chance’
