Go With Me

Chapter 4

They got downtown pretty quickly. Just by walking they would usually be there in less than twenty minutes, but this time it took them a little longer, because they stopped a couple of times to take some photos, for which they through might be interesting. Frank got lucky and photographed a man, crossing the street when the light was still red. Ray took a picture of the rising sun. Then Frank took a picture of a stray dog doing it’s morning business. That got Mikey inspired and he took a picture of a young man taking a piss by a building. That of course angered the young man and he dashed after them, chasing them down to the city centre. Mikey barely got away, being the most uncoordinated one.
But Gerard was bored pretty much the whole time.
When they got to their destination, there was a street fare going on and they took pictures of, mostly, vegetables and the old women selling them, who didn’t really like the flash going off in to their faces. There’s a part of the old city prison visible from were they boys were and Frank just had to take a picture of the windows, sealed off by iron bars. Gerard was still bored, plus his head hurt, because of all the shit he had going on. While the others ran around taking pictures, Gerard sat down in a near by cafe, ordering himself a tall glass of juice.
Mikey and Ray were still photographing, when Frank joined Gerard in the cafe, sitting beside him, causing Gerard’s stomach to flutter.
“You want a drink?” Gerard asked Frank.
“Do you have money?” asked Frank.
“Of course I do! I took it from my old man this morning. And besides, the money is actually mine, because he got it when he sold my binoculars” said Gerard.
“No... He didn’t really sell it, did he?” gasped Frank.
“He did” nodded Gerard: “He told me yesterday, right before I ‘left for school’” Gerard said.
“Was it that army one your grandma got you?”
“Yup”
“Dickhead”
“So, what are you gonna drink?” Gerard said, changing the topic.
“Juice, same as you” said Frank. Gerard waved to the waiter, that was leaning on the wall, by the entrance, smoking a cigarette.
“One more juice” he said, when he caught the waiters attention. The waiter went inside the cafe.
Gerard turned back to Frank: “I’m gonna tell my dad today. He’s going to have a huge hangover today, because he was drinking yesterday, so he’s gonna be lying in bed the whole day. And by the time he gets drunk again tomorrow, he’s gonna forger all about it”
Frank fixed a lock of his dark hair that fell on to his face.
“Why did you do it? Why did you confess?” Frank asked. It was clear from his voice that he was upset.
“Boring” mumbled Gerard, not wanting to talk about this, but he knew how stubborn Frank was and that he won’t let go of the topic.
“They’re going to decided next week, on Monday, if they’re going to kick you out of school. That’s not boring, Gee”
“Yes, it is” countered Gerard, being stubborn.
“It’s the end of school, Gee! Just one more week of classes and we’re done. They can’t just kick you out now“ said Frank, just as the waiter brought his drink, placing it down in front of him. Gerard paid for the drink. After the waiter left, the two boys observed what was going on, on the street fare.
“Do you even care about it?” then asked Frank, breaking the silence.
“Tell me, is there anything I can do about it?” asked Gerard, raising his eyebrow at Frank.
“I don’t know, you could apologise, make something up, like that you didn’t want to take it, that you were just borrowing it or something like that...”
“Yeah? And who the fuck is going to believe me? Me?” hissed Gerard.
Frank was just about to say something back when he got interrupted by Ray’s happy voice: “Look at them! While some of us work, they’re chilling off in the shade”
Frank looked up at Ray, but Gerard just leaned back in his chair, staring in front of himself.
“There’s nothing here” sighed Mikey, when he reached the table Frank and Gerard were sitting at.
“Hmmmm” Frank hummed: “There really isn’t anything interesting here, is there? Let’s go somewhere else!”
“Where?”
“Yeah, where?”
“Exploring!”
“Yeah, sure, but where?”
“I don’t know. Around”
“Where around? Left? Right?”
“North?”
“South, maybe?”
‘I know where I DON’T want to go’ Gerard thought to himself: ‘Absolutely not home’. He had about enough of their photographing. At that moment he didn’t give a single fuck about art and if you knew Gerard, you knew that there was something seriously wrong. Be he knew that he would go with them nonetheless, because he had nothing else to do.
‘Where?’ he wondered himself.
‘Where?’
And that’s when he figured it out where he wants to go! He actually thought of it yesterday. And now again today!
“I know where we should go” he said, feeling proud of himself. All three pairs of eyes turned and stared at him, awaiting his brilliant idea.
“Where?”
“In to nature. In to the wild! That’s The Unknown! I know about some parts you haven’t been to yet. All unexplored. 100% guarantied!”
“And where is this great place?” asked Ray.
“About an hour out of the city if we go by bus. Mine and Mikey’s granddad lived there, before he passed away. There’s waterfalls and small pools in the forest and caves...” Gerard got all excited.
Frank: “What kind of caves?”
Gerard: “Huge ones!”
Mikey: “Oh, really?”
Gerard: “You won’t regret it!”
Frank: “Should we go?”
Mikey: “I don’t know...”
Frank: “I’m all up for it!”
Ray: “My mom’s got practice and my step dad is leaving for the sea side before noon. We could go”
Gerard: “We’ll be back by lunch time”
Frank: “I’m cool with that. My dad’s working the late shift and I have lunch with me”
Mikey: “How are we going to get there? Do you have money for the bus?”
Gerard: “I do”
Mikey: “Did you steal from dad again?”
Gerard: “Yes, how do you think I could give you those couple bucks this morning?”
Frank: “I have my money to! Ray?”
Gerard: “I have the money for all the tickets. Let’s just go”
All of them: “Let’s go!”
They got lucky at the bus station. There were only ten minutes until the bus departure, so Gerard stepped in line at the ticket office, to buy the four tickets, while Frank and Ray, who were sitting on the near by bench talked.
“What hillbilly place is he dragging us to?” whined Ray.
“It’s not far. And besides, there’re only hills and stuff like that, not actual mountains” Frank tried to calm him down.
“But I don’t have socks. I’m gonna get fucking blisters!” Ray cried.
“Yeah, but they are sports shoes. Hiking shoes. They’re just like mine...”
“But I’m gonna get blisters anyway” Ray just wouldn’t give in: “I have no freaking socks”
Gerard turned towards the two boys, taking a good look at Ray. True, he really didn’t have socks. He was wearing ripped knee length black short that went great with his black Vans sneakers.
‘Hiking shoes, yeah right’ Gerard thought, smirking: ‘His business’
He was still having a pretty bad headache, which was a result of a sleepless night and listening to Ray whine about almost everything, didn’t help one bit.
“What do you think of my new shirt, Frank?” asked Ray, taking off his hoodie, so he could show his new sleeveless Black Flag t-shirt.
“It’s from Hot Topic! Mom bought it for me yesterday for the sea side. What do you think?”
Frank smiled, taking a step back so he had a good view of the fro boy.
“Hot” he then said.
“Really?” smiled Ray, slightly shaking around his childlike hips.
Gerard rolled his eyes, trying to suppress the jealousy that was growing inside him. He hated this! Why couldn’t Frank call him hot or sexy or beautiful, like he usually did Ray. He hated the fact that Ray even moved here, causing all of this. Before Ray came along, everything was fine! Gerard remembered one time, a few years back, when he and Frank were about fourteen years old. He, Frank, Mikey and their old friend Bob, who later moved away, where at Frank’s place, getting pretty drunk while watching F.R.I.E.N.D.S. and at one point Mikey was so drunk, he had to go puck. So Bob took him to the bathroom, making sure he got to the toiled bowl, leaving Gerard and Frank alone in Frank’s room.
“I love this!” Gerard exclaimed, falling down on Frank’s bed, right next to Frank who was giggling out of control. Gerard looked at his best friend and even in his most drunken state, he could still notice how beautiful Frank was. What he loved most about Frank, was his smile. Frank turned his head towards Gerard, his smile almost fading away. Gerard could feel this tension between them, and perhaps it was the booze or it was just a strange wave of courage, but he slowly started to lean in. He wasn’t thinking at the time, he was just going with his gut that told him to make Frank his and only his! Gerard guessed that Frank felt that same tension as well, because he too started to slowly lean it, his eyes fixed on Gerard’s eyes and lips. Gerard could almost taste Frank’s soft lips, he could feel his breath on his skin, he could feel actual sparks flying between them, but then Bob walked back in to the room, interrupting the moment. The two boys on the bed swiftly pulled away and Gerard remembered how bright his cheeks turned after.
“Mikey passed out!” Bob announced, crashing down on the floor in front of the bed. Gerard turned his head back to Frank, thinking he’d find his face right there next to his, but Frank was already sitting up cross legged, jugging down a bottle of beer.
Gerard was pulled back to reality by the sound of crumbled paper being kicked around by Mikey. Gerard looked around the ticket office. There was a homeless person slipping on the bench, surrounded by tones of shopping bags and a half drunk bottle of cheap wine in his hand.
It was finally Gerard’s turn to buy the tickets. He quickly bought four tickets, then returned to his friends, so they could find the right bus lain from which the bus would be leaving. And they were surprised that they were the only ones there.
“There’s no one going there” said Ray, like the rest couldn’t see around them.
And at first it really looked like they would be the only ones riding the bus. They were alone on the bus, besides the driver, of course. The driver was a middle aged man and by the looks of his cloths, he was somewhere from the country side. Mikey said that he was afraid that the driver might take them to his home that they are actually not going to reach their wanted destination. And of course while he joked about that, he was laughing in his own special Mikey kind of way. Open mouth, but no sound emerged from it. Gerard told him to shut up. Gerard loved his baby brother, but sometimes he wished that he’d just disappear. He didn’t think he was funny at all and he got so unlucky that he had to sit with him, instead of sitting with Frank, because Ray immediately ran to sit with him, when Frank took over one of the last seats on the bus and Gerard didn’t have any choice left, but to sit across the ail from them by the window, with Mikey sitting right next to him.
They left at the exact time and not a minute later. The bus was quite old. The seats were run down and dusty and the small ashtrays were completely filled up by cigarette buds. And the noise the engine made was just horrible!
Mikey annoyed Ray and Frank for a while, but they got rid of him soon enough, so he started to annoy his older brother. Gerard had to listen to his brother’s completely morally wrong and kind racist jokes, like: “Did you hear about that old Chinese saying, that if the dog still barks it’s undercooked?”
And more and more of distasteful jokes, until Gerard told him he was tired and wanted to sleep. He yawned twice and closed his eyes. He leaned his head on the window and actually tried to catch some sleep. His eyes were burning from the sight of the beautiful sunny morning that they will enjoy later. But it didn’t matter how much he wanted to fall asleep, he just couldn’t. The bus buzzed and produced that awful nose, but at least Gerard was free from his baby brother’s jokes, who was now playing games on his phone. The sound emerging from the phone mixed with the noise of the bus. Because he couldn’t fall asleep he did what he always did when he couldn’t sleep; he thought about Frank. More specifically, he thought about what life would be like if Frank was his. What would have happened if that kiss had happened when they were fourteen. They could be boyfriends by now. They could be staying at each other’s places, snuggled up together in bed with each other, watching their favourite movies. He could surprise Frank by buying him Skittles, which were his favourite. He could enjoy the sight of Frank’s smile without having to hide his love for him. He would be the one sitting next to him right now. Heck, he would even start taking school seriously, just so he could make Frank happy.
School... The phone...
The thought of the event that happened the day before, that was the thing causing his headache!
‘I’m gonna tell the old man in the afternoon or in the evening’ Gerard thought: ‘Whatever’s going to happen will happen, but not now. Now I’m going to enjoy this wonderful day’
So Gerard tried pushing those heavy thoughts away, looking out the window. They were slowly leaving the city behind, the bus turning on a smaller two way round that led towards the countryside. Gerard saw all those factories that were at the edge of the city. When he and Frank were kids, before they even let Mikey join their tag team, they would sneak around the edge of those factories, hopping to see anything interesting. When the long line of factories finally started to end, when the two way road slowly turned on to a local road, Gerard saw the first farm houses. The road started to rise, going up a small hill and on the top of the hill was a small bar-restaurant. There was a small pond in front of the bar/restaurant, that was completely green.
‘There are frogs in there’ Gerard immediately thought. He didn’t really like frogs ever since Mikey put one in his bed, when Gerard was seven. After they passed the bar/restaurant, the road started to lower, heading down in to a valley and that was when the bus started to lose speed. It stopped in front of an old, wooden, very much run down bus stop, where at least ten men got on to the bus. They were loud, their hair combed back and they were wearing overalls and white shirts, covered in sweat stains. They mostly took up the first seats, turning back a couple of times, observing the four young boys in the back.
Mikey poked Gerard, forcing Gerard to look at him. Mikey was holding his nose and making weird faces. Gerard smacked his brother on the hand, making him stop.
“They smell” quietly said Mikey, then laughed without a sound.
“So what?” shrugged Gerard. And true enough, their smell of tobacco, dust, smoke and alcohol soon filled the entire bus.
“Who are these guys?” quietly asked Frank, trying to get as close to Gerard as possible.
“Workmen, returning home from their night shift” explained Gerard.
“Night shift? But it’s already day time!” commented Ray.
“They probably went to have a drink after work” shrugged Gerard, taking another look at the men in front.
“Are they going where we’re going?” asked Ray.
“How the hell should I know that?” hissed Gerard: “Probably so, if they’re on the same bus, I don’t know”
“This needs to be photographed” excitingly said Frank, taking out his camera.
“Did I say this is going to be great?” Gerard smiled, proud of himself that he was the one making Frank happy and not Ray for a change. All Gerard wanted to do, was wrap his arms around Frank at that moment, and ever let go of him again!
“But this is nothing. Wait till you see the real deal” Gerard added.
“Wooow! Can’t wait!” smiled Frank.
“Why are they looking at us like that?” asked Ray, secretly pointing at the workmen.
“Because we’re looking at them” explained Gerard.
The bus ride continued calmly, the workmen chatting among themselves, the boys in the back doing the same. They passed smaller villages, some consisting of only five or six houses, surrounded by fields and meadows, pastures with cattle and horses grazing on the fresh grass. Soon, meadows were replaced by small patches of forests and shrubbery, the houses disappearing all completely, leaving all visible civilization behind. The bus stopped once more, some of the men from before leaving and new ones joining the bus ride.
“Who are there guys?” Ray whispered to Gerard, keeping an eye on the new people.
“Why the hell are you asking me?” growled Gerard in repose.
“Well, who else am I going to ask?” Ray countered, raising his eyebrow. Gerard turned back to the window, rolling his eyes whilst doing so.
They drove for about another twenty or thirty minutes, until they reached a really small village, where the bus drove of the road and on to a small parking lot.
“This is where we’re getting off” announced Gerard, standing up like the men in the front, his friends following his lead, taking their backpacks. None of them said anything, already tired from the long bus ride.
Gerard, Frank, Mikey and Ray blinked at bright light that greeted them when they got off the bus and it took them awhile to get used to it. The bus drove off, leaving the bus in a big cloud of dust.
“Helloooooo!?” shrieked Ray, waving his hands around to get rid of the dust.
“So, where are there caves?” asked Mikey, looking around.
“Don’t you remember Mikes, when we were staying at grandpa’s he showed them to us, once” Gerard said, starting to walk down the small road, with Frank right by his side.
‘Take that Ray’ he thought to himself.
“Of course I don’t remember, I was here only once with you, when you were eleven and I was eight” said Mikey, kicking around pebbles as they went.
“They’re over there” said Gerard, pointing at a far away hill, covered by trees.
“That’s far!” whined Ray, looking in the direction of Gerard’s finger.
“Yeah... Come on”
Gerard and Frank walked upfront as the leader and co-leader of their little group, with Ray and Mikey in the back, talking about some random school thing. They soon left the road, turning on to an even smaller forest path that led them up the hill, further in to the wilderness.
“There are definitely snakes here” said Mikey, looking around, hoping to not see anything slither around, because he was deadly afraid of snakes.
It didn’t take long before they got to a small river stream, a small bridge running across it. Well, it wasn’t really a bridge, it was really just two ropes and broken pieces of wood laid between them. Gerard looked up the stream, where he knew the path would lead them, seeing that the water was clearer up there and there were more rocks to climb on, so they would get amazing photos.
“We should go up there, you can make some amazing pictures” said Gerard and started walking over the ‘bridge’.
The other three stepped closer to the river stream, staring down in to the cold, clear water.
“Come on, let’s go” said Gerard, halfway over the stream. The rest followed him in short time, when they decided that they should really get a move on, if they want to make this an actual photography trip.
It surprised Gerard how much he remembered from when he was a kid. The pathways, the occasional houses that you could see in the distance, he even remembered a couple of trees that had letters and a small + between them. Like one had A + R or one had S + L. Gerard thought it was sweet, but then he remembered that he did the same thing at his grandfather’s farm. There was this one tree at the back of the shed, where his grandfather kept his tools and all that shit. It was the last summer he had spent at his granddad’s and all he wanted to do, was bring Frank with him to show him this beautiful piece of nature. Frank could have gone with him, but he had to break his leg, so his parents didn’t let him. But he could have... Gerard imagined it all. What they would do, maybe he’d even had the guts to finally tell him how he feels, maybe even finish that kiss from the sleepover. But, no, Frank had to break his leg, sending Gerard’s plans down the toilet.
But they talk almost every day.
Right before he had to leave, to return to the city, return to his Frankie, Gerard took his grandfather’s pocketknife and headed to that one tree at the back of the shed. With some effort he carved an F and G in to the tree trunk and that small + between the two letters. If he had more time, he would have craved a heart around it, but sadly, his mom came too soon.
He wondered of that tree was still there, with his and Frank’s initials on it.
Gerard was pulled out of his memories, when the sanctuary of the forest disappeared and a valley full of fields opened up in front of them.
“Wow!” gasped Frank, stepping a step further from Gerard to take a good look at the view.
“Right?” Gerard smiled.
“Yeah” Frank agreed, mesmerised.
“Is it still far?” asked Mikey, when he and Ray reached Gerard.
“Ha, it has just begun little brother” smirked Gerard, receiving a glare from Mikey. The only thing Mikey dislike about his older brother, was the fact that he called him ‘baby brother’ or ‘little brother’ in front of other people. Every time he did so, he wanted to punch him in the face. But, of course he didn’t. He loved his brother nevertheless.
“Really?” whined Ray.
‘Does this guy do anything else then whine?’ Gerard asked, keeping the thought to himself.
“Yeah, really” said Gerard. To be honest, Gerard was kind of happy that Ray wasn’t enjoying this as much as Frank and him. In his mind, it meant, that he and Frank are more relationship material then Ray and Frank.
The four boys then moved on down the valley, past the fields with corn and wheat and pack in to the shadows of the forest.
Ray tried to keep up with Gerard and Frank, who were practically running around, taking a look at everything there was to be seen, but he just couldn’t. His feet were already hurting and he could feel those blisters starting to form.
Right behind Ray, was Mikey, who didn’t even make an effort to keep up. He thought that as long as he kept the boys in sight everything would be okay and he wouldn’t get lost.
The forest ended again, a huge clearing opening up before them. Green grass with small flowers growing in between, surrounded by countless spruces. The sun was shining bright, it’s light shimmering in the water drops on the grass leaves. It was breath taking.
There were some comments about really wanting to have sunglasses right now from Ray, but Gerard didn’t really pay attention as he started walking across the clearing, seeing the path on the other side. It was about ten minutes before they reached the end of the spruce forest, seeing numerous hills surrounding a narrow valley with a couple of houses. But what caught Gerard’s eye, was a single house, built on top of one of the smaller hills, very close to them.
“Agatha and her son!” said Gerard and pointed towards that single house. The boys walked to the house, Gerard remembering scary stories about Agatha and her family along the way, which his granddad told him about.
“There are people living here?” asked Ray, when they got to the house.
“Yeah” said Gerard: “Isn’t it great?”
“Yeah... Sure” sighed Ray, collapsing down on the ground. They watched the old run down house for a while.
“They don’t even have electricity here! Does anyone see an electrical wire or something?” Mikey observed, looking around.
“They don’t need it” smirked Gerard, he and Frank sitting down, their backs pressed against each other.
“What do you mean, they don’t need it?” gasped Mikey: “What about TV? What the hell do they do here?”
“I don’t know. Stuff, I guess” shrugged Gerard: “They work in the fields all they, so they probably don’t have much time for TV Mikes. Where do you think we get vegetables from?” Gerard said, raising his eyebrow.
“I don’t know... By ship” shrugged Mikey.
“Yeah, sure and cows are purple just like on the Milka chocolate bar, right?” laughed Frank, leaning his head back on Gerard’s shoulder.
“Well, yeah...” Mikey mumbled.
“I would lose my mind, if I had to live here” spoke Ray.
They sat in silence for a while, before Mikey decided to speak again.
“Do these people have a dog?” he asked.
“No, at least they didn’t have the last time I was here” said Gerard.
“Who are ‘they’?” asked Ray.
“Agatha and her son. Two weirdoes. They live alone. The son, he’s mentally retarded and crazy and I’m not trying to be mean or anything, but he really is. That’s why they sent him in to an asylum. And... ammm...”
“And, what?”
“... Never mind, it doesn’t matter. Actually I don’t know really. My grandpa didn’t really talk much about them. He only said to keep away from them” said Gerard, taking a look at the run down place.
“Uuu, scary” exaggerated Ray, waving his hands around dramatically.
“Just people like people” said Frank. Frank really wasn’t one to judge too quickly. He didn’t really judge at all. If the guy didn’t like you, then something must really wrong with you.
“It looks like there’s no one here. Let’s just go...” said Gerard, standing up and helping Frank do the same.
“Maybe they’re already dead” said Frank.
“Yeah... possible” agreed Gerard in a mumble. As his brother and Ray struggled to stand up, Gerard took a good look at the house. It look about a hundred years old. There was plaster falling down from the walls, under the windows weathered wood. The door was closed, the windows dusty and you couldn’t clearly seen inside. And Gerard didn’t want to look inside, not after the stories he had heard about this family.
“I’m sure as hell no one’s living here anymore” said Ray, finally getting up on his feet.
“Ever since I could remember, Agatha and her son were old. They’re probably really gone” said Gerard.
“Let’s make a couple of photos” suggested Frank.
“Wouldn’t you rather we go down to the valley? We still have a lot to walk through” said Gerard, getting an unpleasant feeling just being close to this house.
“A couple of photos won’t hurt” smiled Frank, taking his camera out from his backpack.
“Frank’s right” agree Ray, taking out his own camera. Mikey, on the other hand, just took out his phone.
“Phone’s good enough” he said, more to himself then the rest and began taking pictures with the other two. Gerard leaned back on a near by tree and just watched Ray and Frank jump around the house taking photos. He still couldn’t get those horrifying storied out of his head and he just hopped they weren’t true....
The storied were mostly about the crazy son, who, thank god, was now in an asylum, locked away, not able to harm anyone. Gerard really didn’t like that they were spending so much time at this house, it sent shivers down his spine, every time he looked towards one of its windows.
Gerard tried escaping those terrifying thoughts, so he focused on Frank. He watched as the smaller boy switched lenses, trying to decide from which angle to take to picture. Gerard admired Frank. He was everything he wanted to be and more, and all this did, was just make him love him even more. Gerard looked at it this way; Frank and him were two pieces of a puzzle that belong together, soul mates if you will, because one always had what the other lacked. They just completed each other.
Gerard loved the way Frank was excited about life. How his eyes – his second favourite thing about Frank – always sparkled happiness and joy and just... Love. He loved living and being alive and Gerard was just stunned every time he looked in to his eyes. But he what he didn’t love, was when that light, that sparkle faded away when Frank was sad. He wasn’t often said, but when he was, he was a complete wreck and Gerard was always there by his side, trying to ignite the spark again. He even wrote a song for him once, granted he never showed it to him, but he kept in his sketch book, always keeping it close to him. Gerard titled the song The Light Behind Your Eyes and he could just imagine how beautiful it would sound if Frank would have put music to it, being so talented at the guitar as he was.
‘Maybe I’ll show it to him one day’ Gerard thought, still watching his best friend taking pictures, probably forgetting the world all together. It was just him and the camera.
Then, right from behind the house, Ray ran to Gerard, a terrified expression on his face.
“Let’s get the fuck out of here” he said, packing his camera.
“What is it?” Gerard asked, looking up at the scared afro boy.
“Let’s get the fuck out of here!” Ray repeated: “I think I saw someone inside the house!”
“Did you see a ghost?” asked Mikey, smirking, thinking how childish Ray was, even though he was the youngest of the four. Gerard looked at the house, trying to determent if there really was any movement coming from inside the house, then immediately his eyes looked for Frank.
“Let’s go. Frank, stop taking pictures and let’s go” said Gerard as soon as he spotted his best friend.
“What’s going on?” asked Frank, when he got to the others, completely confused.
“I think there’s someone in there” said Ray, slightly quivering.
Frank and Gerard looked at each other.
“Where?” asked Frank, turning to Ray.
“There, at the back...” said Ray, pointing in the direction he came running from only moments ago: “There’s a window and I think I saw someone staring through it... But only for a moment... Then they disappeared...” Ray explained, his voice shaky.
Frank and Gerard looked at each other again, mentally agreeing that they should get the hell out of there. But of course, Mikey had other plans.
“Where? Show me” he said to Ray, taking his hand, pulling him towards the house.
“There” said Ray, trying to get free form Mikey’s grip, but to no avail: “There, at the back”
Mikey looked in the way of her finger, pointing towards the back, a mischievous smile forming on his face, as he started walking towards the back.
“Mikes!” Gerard half yelled after his brother: “Leave it alone and let’s go”
“What? You scared of two oldies?” smirked Mikey.
“Maybe they’re still alive and it’s not right to disturb them!” Frank said after Mikey.
“Pussies” said Mikey.
The rest followed him, just to make sure nothing would happen to him. While Mikey walked right to the back, the others stayed a few meters away, just in case. And just like Ray said, there was a window at the back, a small one, but still big enough to see shapes of furniture inside. Mikey stepped right to that window, pressing his hands and face on it, taking a look inside.
“There’s nothing in here” he said: “And it’s really messy”
He spent some more time pressed to the window like that, just looking around inside.
“It looks like no one’s lived here for two hundred years” he commented.
Then, on the other side of the glass, appeared a head of an old lady with long white locks of hair.
Mikey screamed, jumping away from the window, barely keeping his balance. Ray screamed as well, with all his lungs and all Frank said was: “Guys, run!”
They all picked up their backpacks, Frank grabbed Ray by his hand, pulling him behind up the hill and the hell away from this house.
Gerard saw Mikey backing away from the house, mouth open, his eye almost falling from his scull and white as a sheet. The old lady, who seemed to be around a hundred years old, her face all worn out and dry, which was framed with long white hair, stared through the window, yelling something, so you could clearly see two rotten teeth and a big butcher knife in her hand.
Gerard grabbed is brother by his wrist. No fucking way is he leaving his baby brother behind, even if he is an idiot who never listens to him or anyone else for that matter.
They ran up the hill after Frank and Ray.
