Chapter 2

The sun was slowly setting on the west, behind the buildings, lights lighting up in near by apartments. Gerard stood up, headed for the bike shack. There is where he hid a packet of cigarettes , which he stole from his old man, on some high shelf. He took one cigarette from the packet and out it in the pocket oh his loose summer shirt. Then he headed don’t the street. He passed the grocery store, which already had a line in front of it for the ice cream machine. Some older boys were sitting on a bench in front of the store, others were playing basketball in the court. The older local girls already took over one of the gardens at the cafe. Gerard passed them and right there on the parking lot of the local bar, he saw a car with the windows rolled down and one of the bullies from his school sitting in it, blasting horrible music from the radio.
“Hey kid! Get over here!” the older boy yelled from the car.
Gerard showed him his middle finger and continued walking. Gerard heard, how the older boy yelled after him: “You’re dead tomorrow at school, you little fuck!”
Gerard then turned left. He passed this really big house with a tall fence. There was a sign hung on the fence, and with big yellow letters it said: CAR REPAIR SERVICE.
There were some rundown cars sitting in the front yard. Standing next to one of the two seated cars, was his younger brother, Mikey, marvelling at the rundown machine. Gerard didn’t quite get his brothers obsession with these stupid cars, but then again, he didn’t really care about it either. Gerard walked across the street, avoiding his brother seeing him.
“Stupid kid” Gerard spat. He continued walking, his path leading him to his high school, up the hill. He climbed up the stairs, which led to the school. He knew there were exactly fifty-six of them. He had counted them on numerous occasions in his past years, every time he walked up or down them. He knew by memory every single crack on them, every scratch and every name that was cut in to the fence by keys. Those were his stairs. But that evening they felt foreign to him. He reached the top, turned around and looked over the view of all of the apartment buildings, then took those couple more steps to get to the school.
He went pass the gymnasium, sat down on a bench, pulling the cigarette out of his pocket and professionally lit it up with his lighter. He inhaled a couple of times, then exhaled a big cloud of smoke. He made that click sound with the lighter three more times, then placed it inside his pocket. He sat there on the bench and smoked.
He didn’t want to go home. Not yet. He noticed the first street lights turning on. He just sat there, looking up at the sky. Some starts up in the sky, assured a beautiful morning. He though how great it would be of that thing with the cell phone hadn’t happened. There were only a few more days till the end of school and he had to go fuck around with that phone. Why the fuck did he need to do that? He was angry, quite mad at himself. He could have been smarter. And besides... Boring.
He stepped on the cigarette, which had burned out and made his way around the school. He passed the chemistry lab and then passed the registry office and the teacher’s lounge. He pressed his head against the window, and looked around inside. Not that he expected anything to be there, but he was curious and he did it mostly out of habit. He made out the shapes of desks and chairs, and that was mostly it. A chill ran over his body, because it wasn’t completely warm yet. He headed back down to the streets, but this time he took a different path; taking the curvy road that led up to the school. He ran through the field, up to the road, then kept walking by the crops that had corn growing from the soil. A smell of dirt filled the air. Without realising it, he thought about his grandfather and his farm. It gave him a warm feeling inside. As Gerard remembered his times at his grandfathers, a faint smile appeared on his face. Like when he and his grandfather were setting up a new scarecrow in the field, and while they were digging up a hole in which to place the scarecrow, one of the birds had already sat down on it and carefully watched the old man and the young boy. The two just laughed and agreed that there was no point putting up the scarecrow not, since the birds aren’t afraid of it.
Or the time his grandfather took him to see the caves that were deep inside the forest. Scary caves! He was very little at the time, so even the forest seemed dark, thick and scary, not to mention how the caves looked by comparison. To him they looked huge, at least the largest one, and Gerard thought that in those caves lived a scary forest man with a long black beard and black eyes. Brrrr! He never dared to go there alone, he only watched the from a distance... And more and more.
He was so deep inside his memories, he didn’t even notice he was back in front of his apartment building. Automatically he looked up, seeing that the light in the apartment was still turned on. The sight returned him to the present, the smile fading from his lips.
He went back to the bike shack and returned the packet of cigarettes back to its place. Then he walking inside the elevator and soon enough he was standing in front of his front door. He heard shouting, coming from the other side of the door. He heard his father’s voice, old Way... It was clear from his voice that he had been drinking again. He was once again drunk and yelling at mom... And Gerard’s mom would not stand for it!
Gerard stood in front of the door for a second, then quietly and carefully pressed down on the door handle and entered without a sound. He took of his Converses the same way he came inside the apartment, quietly, then tiptoed to the children’s bedroom. In darkness he made his way to his bed, turned on the light, then removed his shirt and jeans, leaving on only his boxers, slipping under the covers. Gerard was starting at the ceiling when he heard a quiet, maybe even a little scared voice: “Gee, are they really going to kick you out of school?”
Gerard turned his head, seeing his little brother, tucked away in his own bed, covered up to his chin. The only part of him that Gerard could see, were his dark, scared eyes.
“Go to sleep” said Gerard.
“But your light’s still on” said Mikey.
Gerard turned off the light. He laid on his back, continuing to stare at the ceiling from a while. There was still noise coming from the living room, yelling and screaming. He closed his eyes, and through thought, travelled to his grandfathers farm.
