Go With Me
Chapter 10
“I’ve head enough of this fucking around! I’m going back the way we came” Mikey said determined, raising his middle fingers in the air and showing them to the other three, but especially to Gerard and his shitty oriental skills. With that done, he turned around and headed towards the caves, from where he’ll continue down the path they came here.
“You were leading us in a fucking circle!” said Ray, completely pissed off: “You fucking asshole!”
Gerard didn’t really listen to Ray throwing insults at him as he stared at the caves in disbelief. When Ray noticed Gerard wasn’t even flinching, he stepped to his and punched him in the shoulder.
“Asshole!” he yelled again.
Gerard frowned, stepping a step away, so he could avoid Ray’s next punch. Like Ray, Gerard couldn’t believe how wrong he was, what a huge mistake he had made.
The hill was the right one, known to Gerard and it was true he had seen it before from the other side... When he was looking at it from his grandfather’s farm. How could he be so stupid?
“I don’t understand...” he mumbled.
“Of course you don’t, because you don’t understand anything! Because you are just a fucking useless loser!” Ray shouted at Gerard, tears prickling in his eyes: “It’s no wander they’re kicking you out of school, you stupid fuck! You’re just –“
“RAY!” Frank interrupted, his voice strict and determent, slightly mad: “That’s enough!”
Frank couldn’t listen another word from Ray’s mouth. Hearing how he insulted his Gee, almost made Frank punch Ray in the face and shut him up for good.
A teary eyed Ray turned to Frank, his lower lip trembling.
“We’re never getting out of here!” he said, leaning his head down on Frank’s shoulder: “And no one will know where we are! We can’t even call!”
Then Ray broke down in tears. Even though he didn’t want to, Frank hugged Ray and tried to comfort him. Gerard’s face was pale when he turned towards Frank, their eyes meeting. Gerard shook his head, tears now gathering in his eyes as well. Frank just stared back, his face expressionless, his eyes empty.
“It’s your fault... It’s your fucking fault...” Ray sobbed in to Frank’s shoulder, his words aimed at Gerard.
“There’s no problem” Frank spoke with a soft voice, drawing soothing circles in to his back: “Just calm down. At least we know where we are now”
Ray’s crying calmed a little and Gerard set off towards the caves. Mikey was already there, looking back over his shoulder to see if anyone was following him. When he saw his older brother approaching, he went past the caves and continued down a narrow path surrounded by tall grass.
Gerard walked after him, still confused over his mistake and now even a little hurt, seeing Frank’s arms around Ray again. Gerard knew Frank had to do it or things would have gotten even uglier than they were, but still... He didn’t like it. He was just passing the caves, when he heard a bird sounding from above the caves, up on the overhang and it sounded like it was laughing with the scariest laugh Gerard had ever heard.
Kra-ha-ha-ha! Kra-ha-ha-haaaaaaaa!
Even the Joker’s laugh seemed kinder to him.
Tired, bleary and without any will to do anything, Gerard sat down at the entrance at the biggest cave, taking his last cigarette out of his pocket in lighting it with is lighter. He deeply inhaled the smoke, then blew it out, up towards the bird sounds. The bird was then quiet and instead of it spoke Mikey, who was waiting at the edge of the field by the narrow path that led to the pools.
“Are we going?” he asked.
Gerard didn’t answer him, but he did see Frank gesturing to Mikey to just wait where he was.
Gerard made a couple more long drags, before turning out the half smoked roll of tobacco and putting it back in the packet.
After Frank somewhat calmed down Ray, he walked towards Gerard, a disapproving look on his face. Frank sat down next to Gerard.
“What’s the plan Gee?” asked Frank
Gerard looked at the short boy sitting next to him, then shrugged: “I don’t know”
“It’s gonna be dark soon” he said.
“I’m not moving from here. It’s too dangerous to head back at night” said Gerard.
“I knew it!” Ray appeared in front of them, seemingly very pissed: “Where gonna stay here!”
Silence.
Frank stared at Ray for a while, his eyes being loud enough for Ray to understand what was going on.
“Oooooh, hell no! No way...” Ray then said after a while: “No way! I’m not sleeping here! Are you two insane, our something?”
“Ray” calmly, yet very much annoyed spoke Frank: “It’s gonna be completely dark soon”
“Are you crazy! We’re in the middle of the woods!! In some stupid fucking cave!! You’re both insane! You’re crazy!”
“What, you gonna walk back in the dark? With those goddamn blisters, huh? It’s more than two hours to the bus stop...” said Frank, then adding a little later: “...We don’t even know if there even are any buses driving back to the city!”
“No way!” Ray continued to be stubborn.
Then Mikey joined them, and everyone could see he was scared. Ray concerned stepped to him.
“What is it?” he asked.
“Shit, dude....” Mikey mumbled, his face completely pale.
“What’s wrong?” asked Frank.
The atmosphere turned slightly colder, Mikey’s fear infecting the rest of them.
“Down there, in the forest...” Mikey pointed down in to the fast darkening forest: “I think... I think I heard a child crying...”
“Crying?” Ray asked, now completely stiffened from fear.
“I don’t know...” said Mikey: “I thought... There was something in the bushes, and then... Like a child was crying... It was really dark i-in t-t-the forest, I-I didn’t s-see...” he stuttered.
Frank and Gerard looked around the growing darkness of the forest. Nothing. Nothing, besides a bird taking flight in the distance.
“Those are birds” then calmly said Gerard, trying to keep his fear under control: “They can sounds like anything”
“Yeah” Frank backed him up: “One time, my dad and I got stuck in the middle of the road at night, ‘cause we ran out of gas... We stepped out of the car and all around us we could hear like someone was heavily sobbing... Like an asthmatic old guy what’s gonna die any second... My das almost shit his pants. But then we got a torch and lighted the road, and there was a small hedgehog coming our way. A hedgehog! A plane little animal...”
Frank took that hedgehog home that night and named him Arthur, after Gerard’s middle name.
“And I thought....” Mikey nervously smiled, visible relaxing.
“Yeah, get used to it” sighed Ray.
“Get used to what?”
“To those sounds! You’re gonna be listening to them the whole night!” explained Ray, who clearly came to terms with the fact that they can’t go back now. Or maybe it was just those sounds that persuaded him that it would be better to stay.
But then there was Mikey’s reaction...
“Yeah, sure” he smirked, looking at Frank and his brother.
“Are you two fucking serious?! You’re bullshitting me!! In the middle of the wood?! Dad’s gonna fucking kill us!!” Mikey almost yelled.
“Maybe the crying you heard was the little Morgan kid, when his dad skinned him alive, because he stole one single grain of corn?” said Gerard.
Mikey stared at his older brother, and Frank was laughing under his breath.
“That’s not funny!” said Ray, even though a smile was curving his lips.
“Mikey, look realistically at the situation” said Frank, pulling himself together: “Would you go in to that darkness right now, past the Morgan’s and then in to the forest again, though a clearing, forest yet again, past Agatha’s house and the forest again...”
“Okay, okay... I get it” Mikey sighed.
“It wouldn’t have come to this, if we had had taken the same way back immediately!” said Ray and judgingly looked at Gerard and punched him in the shoulder again.
“Ray” said Frank, gently pushing him away from Gerard.
“What’s done is done” he said firmly: “And besides, we all agreed to take a different way back. It’s not just Gerard’s fault...”
“Yeah, but who dragged us out here?” Ray wouldn’t give in.
“We voted, remember?” said Frank.
“But you persuaded me!” said Ray, sitting down himself, contemplating if he should just break up with Frank right there and then. Frank was a sweet and caring guy, but aside the fact that Ray liked Mikey and that it was obvious that Frank and Gerard liked each other, he sometimes found Frank pretty annoying and over protective of Gerard.
“Whatever” then finally spoke Gerard: “I’m already sorry I even brought you fuckers up here!”
And he stormed off away from the other three, because Gerard knew that if he heard one more complaint from Ray or Mikey he’d punch them.
He didn’t regret about bringing Frank here though. He absolutely couldn’t be happier about that, because this trip brought them together. He just wished the other two would disappear and never come back.
“Gee!” Frank called after Gerard.
“Can you just leave me alone?!” Gerard hissed back through clenched teeth.
“Don’t be like that” Frank said, finally reaching his love and taking his hand, which Gerard quickly shook off.
“Like what?! Huh? Like what?! I have fucking enough of their never ending whining and complaining! I am done! I am fucking done trying to be nice to them! I don’t care anymore!! Do whatever the fuck you want, ‘cause I am done helping you!!”
And then Frank kissed him. It was the most effective way he knew to shut him up without knocking him unconscious.
The kiss wasn’t long lasting, because soon enough Frank looked away, his hands still cupping Gerard’s face.
“Will you now please listen to me?” Frank asked, a light smile curving his lips.
Gerard huffed in response, but stayed quiet.
“Just stop listening to them okay? Because they are scared of spending the night here and cope with it in their own ways. And honestly I’m scared to, ‘cause we don’t know what’s out there, but I trust you, okay? I trust you. I love you” then he kissed him again, this time with more depth and passion. He slowly licked Gerard’s lower lip, then slipped his tongue in his mouth when he parted his lips. This kiss lasted longer, but was interrupted to soon by Mikey’s voice yelling out: “Where the fuck did you disappear of to!?”
The two slowly returned back to the caves, finding Ray nervously passing in front of them and Mikey watching him with his almost always present poker face.
“Finally!” Ray said when he saw Frank and Gerard emerge from the darkness.
“What’s the plan Gee?” he asked, crossing his arms.
“We’re staying Ray. It’s too dark to go back” Frank answered instead.
And then they heard a noise above their head. Cracking branches, rock hitting rock.
They looked up just in time to see one of the biggest boulders and a couple smaller ones tumbling down towards them from the overhang.
